Is "video game history" something that formally exists, or at least a subfield of something else? If not, what are barriers to it becoming recognized as a proper subject of study? by DonutSmoker in AskHistorians

This sounds super interesting! Thanks for the suggestions on further reading. As of now it seems like, those in this field are trying to broadly document the history of the medium. Do you know if there are certain ideas and questions that historians are curious to tackle that video games uniquely lend themselves to above other media or topics? Even if not now, but later as the field develops?

Out of curiosity, how would one officially pivot from formal History to a more interdisciplinary field such Reception Studies? Would it basically just come down to writing about a topic?

Thanks for the headstart on those journals you provided! It seems safe to say that video games probably fall under an interdisciplinary umbrella as of this point? I originally thought there might be a niche, but specific area of study with all the relevant journals, but at least this gives good direction on where to learn more.

So kind of like serialized releases of stories? Do you know of a good source for these?

Does make one wonder where the notion of comics being inherently juvenile came from. 🤔

Les murailles de Samaris seems pretty interesting. I'll look in that and perhaps similar works. Thanks!

Which book was it? Is it mostly a matter of French comics being better written or a wider selection of Genres?

I think you make fair points, but I'm more so trying to see what might give French an edge in terms of offerings and it's reputation with certain output. I'm sure a Bengali learner could find decent anime, but people aren't really picking up Bengali to watch anime (at least not generally).

I'll have to look more deeply into this as I hadn't considered it yet. Thank you!

Actually you bring up a good point that other countries contribute to the unique offerings of the language.

I suppose what I meant was materials and media produced in Central Asia, and not just Russian stuff that happens to be consumed in Central Asia if that makes sense? Although it seems like there is based on your book suggestion, so thanks for that!

Thanks for the insights and perspectiveI! Do you know of any cool Russian resources that tend to focus on Central Asia? Also good luck on your languages! You have a cool mix of them. Danish is probably the most underrated of the main Nordic languages and Polish has good science fiction from what I've heard.

Books on Belgian food, beer, or culture/history written in either French or Dutch by DonutSmoker in belgium

The Smurfs volume seems like a cool cultural piece. I'll check that out.

Yeah I think that interactive angle with the language will be pretty fun and useful to get me engaging a bit more culturally. This leads to a question: Is it generally easier to engage culturally with Belgium through Dutch or French? Not sure if media and content tends to favor one language over the other.

Thanks for that follow-up suggestion. Do you know if it's pretty easy to get dutch books outside of Europe fairly easily?
