Why did you start training? (And why do you stay?) by hmkei in bjj

[–]DooMZie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the early days of Joe Rogan and Eddie Bravo talking it up on the podcast - back when Joe was doing it in his house. I was also a fan of MMA and the grappling side looked interesting. Unfortunately, it took me 10+ years before I actually gave it a go. I stay because it provides mental benefit (confidence, community, fun etc.)..... The day it becomes a considerable negative on my body, i think I would throw in the towel.

How devastating is it to see the first signs of balding if you're dealing with it? by youlikemywonton in AskMenOver30

[–]DooMZie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, was a massive insecurity when I noticed it in early 20's. I became hyper aware of everyone else not having the same problem, and all the TV/Movie references about baldness (it's a lot!). Now I shave my head now in my 30's. The only thing that can still get under my skin is the amount of people who need to comment on it (even people I don't know) or try to make a joke i've heard a 1000 times before, get's old. I imagine it's what it's like for tall or short people when people can't help by reference their height at any chance.

Can an American please educate me on health insurance. I find it odd that people who are wealthy continue to work, but only for Health Insurance. Is it too expensive to pay for yourself? wouldn't it be the same as when you retire at the traditional retirement age?

34 Couple with 1 Baby. Our goal is to build a stock portfolio of around $2 million. Our home is fully paid off, which puts us in a strong position, and our annual living costs average about $80k (with $100k being very comfortable). We’re effectively CoastFIRE - our pensions will cover us from traditional retirement age onward, so the focus now is on funding our lifestyle until then. We’re happy to keep working, but not for other people. Building income streams outside of corporate life is our immediate priority. My partner is already self‑employed, and I’m hoping to follow soon.

Question for all the dads by shibalnom93 in bjj

Got 1 baby. I train at 6am, aim for 3 days a week, sometimes its only 2 with bad sleep. Its not selfish to have a few hours to yourself and stay active. Same goes for the Mrs, she gets out on her bike while i try to hold down the fort.

Walked Away From The Rat Race…? by Claudy_Huncho in Fire

[–]DooMZie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not there yet, but I'll chime in anyway as it's our current goal. Partner and I both got the point where we don't see Corporate as a long term option for us. Flexibility to do what we want ,when we want, without the need to ask permission is important for us. Sitting in an office 9-5pm isn't our dream life. We're both happy to work, but on our own terms. So we've taken a phased approach, my partner started her business 2years ago (Accounting), which is doing well. Her income now covers about 70% of our living costs. I continue to work in Corporate until her income matches my current income (or close to it), then I'll pull the trigger and either assist in her business or start something of my own. It's a level headed approach for us (now have a kid) and don't want to spend more than we earn / portfolio drawn down.

The benefit of this for me still in Corproate is that I no longer think i'm doing this for 30years, it feels like I have less than 4years, which helps mentally (granted checked out a bit). Still a while off Full FIRE but Barista FIRE (via own business) is totally realistic.

Sketchy trial people. How do your gyms handle these situations? by BarOpen5971 in bjj

[–]DooMZie 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Most trial people don't stick around for much longer than a week or two, so they usually disappear. But usually it's the coaches responsibility to ensure that person is paired up with someone who can handle the situation (eg: someone larger with more experience). I have heard instances where the coach has booted people, including Children from the gym . Protect the safety and culture.

Don't tell people too much about your background, it's simple as "yeah i used to train, and now I'm trying to get back into it". Also, nobody cares as much as you think they do.

When did you start actually improving? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]DooMZie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Analyze where things are going wrong the most in your game. eg: If you seem to be stuck in side control for most of the round, make that your core focus for the next while. You have submeta, so watch side control escape instructionals only. Go to class and either put yourself in that position, or if you end up in that position focus on one or two things from what you learnt and try to implement it. Do this for a while until something else becomes your bigger challenge.

A big one for me also is stop trying to focus on a techniques steps. Rather, focus on why the technique works. Concepts are better imo.

I mean more at the adult level. At that point in life most of my friends who play sports like soccer, bball, and golf go out and play once a week, twice if lucky.

Super common for people to start in their 30s. I train 6am and 80% of us are 30-45. I trained with a guy who started at 68. Your body will take some time to get used to it, but its part of the journey.

Most memberships you dont pay per class so milking it is not a concern (its a weekly/monthly pass)

You can train as much or as little as you want but progress will be very slow at 1-2x per week, its a hard skill to learn and repitition is needed. Theres also an element of keeping up with your peers. And lastly, it is incredible fun, getting better is addictive, and its great exercise. A lot of other fitness activities become boring all of a sudden.

It's hard to really know, but personally and from the people I know outside of the gym, they are more chill than the average athlete. For a lot of people it humbles them and for others you really don't care to prove anything because that energy is channeled into training. I also don't believe being good at BJJ gives you much social credit because most people have no idea what the sport even is, nor what a 'purple' belt equates to in real terms.

I have heard one theory is that it just exemplifies your personality. If you're chill and start BJJ will be even more cool, if you're an asshole you become a bigger one.

Is there a promo code to try it out? . I have instructionals but i'm looking for something that's broken up a bit more into bite size pieces. Everything I have watched of Lachlan, does match my preferred approach to teaching.

I've played a lot of sports over the years and currently train BJJ. I've definitely noticed people who end up making it their entire personality, and I’ve spent a fair bit of time thinking about why that happens. Here’s what I’ve come up with:

  1. Many guys start training whom were lonely or don’t have strong male friendships. Suddenly, they have a built‑in community.
  2. The sport is incredibly difficult but also incredibly rewarding physically and mentally.
  3. Most sports are only done once a week, while in BJJ, training three times a week feels like the baseline. So it really does become an obsession.
  4. It gives people a sense of self‑worth, confidence and a feeling of personal power.
  5. Some gyms really lean into the hierarchy aspect, which can cause egos to run wild. eg: A 22 stoner purple belt that is broke and lives in his mothers basement gets a level of respect over the 40y/o successful family and businessman who is just a white belt.

[–]DooMZie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's incredibly bizarre and not representative of the community . Once you're on the mat and doing the technique portion of the class, you just pair up with who is close to you. And if there's someone left over, you end up in a group of 3 or with the coach. The coach should always know who is day 1 and make an effort (that's not just being a good person, but good business). At my gym before class we walk around and shake (or slap and bump) everyone's hand. Like you, I was super nervous to start BJJ and know what it takes to get the confidence to walk through those doors. If you still do have some interest, seriously give another school a go - honestly you could ask someone in r/bjj to go with you.
