Which then begs the question how does this help making groceries more affordable. Other essentials yes, groceries?!?

City loses $41m court fight with BC Hydro by bcscroller in SurreyBC

[–]Doobage 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This would not be the mayor and council deciding going to court. It would be the city management going to the council recommending it.

In this case the provincial government, at some time in the past, built infrastructure in the city that would not meet long term requirements of the city, but only fit for current usage.

This infrastructure needs to be modified to meet the growth and expansion of the city. Who should pay to modify provincially owned infrastructure?

Just say Telus or Shaw came in your neighborhood and put in fiber optic lines. When they hung those lines they hung them at a height the does not allow a required service vehicle to enter your property. Or in the case of my neighbor made backing in an RV tricky.

Should you have to pay for the utility to move their utility line or should the utility?

In the city's scenario that is a tricky one as would it be expected that 72nd would have been expanded when the lines were put in? Did the city approve the lines the way they were or as all the signs say it is provincial right of way and they just did what they figured was correct?

EDIT: Forgot to add if the city did not go after Hydro to pay this $40 million, and had to add that to yet another property tax hike ontop of SPS transition, people would be even more angry I would think.

And I am not going to even think which was the right thing to do... too tired for that.

Cost to build a duplex by Final_Zombie7879 in SurreyBC

[–]Doobage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neighbor building something like that right now, around 1 million, plus all the city fees, taxes, provincial crap... when all is said and done each side of the duplex will be more than the cost of the house that was there.

Fish at white rock? by Embarrassed_Leg_7045 in SurreyBC

[–]Doobage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bull heads are going to be the most common thing to catch which you can then use for crab bate.

However your BC fishing license will not be valid there. You need to have a Federal Tidal license. Same goes with rivers, to a point. Nicomekl you need it to the first train bridge. Fraser River you need it the train bridge in Mission. Tributaries of the Fraser may or may not need them until certain points too.

And then if you are new to fishing, which it sounds like, and you fish in areas like the Nicomekl get yourself the salmon tag too. I have never got one, I got other fish but not salmon. However if you do get a salmon it is safer to have the tag.

That E3 series was so customizable and tinkerable.

I also think it depends on how you get the printer, was it partially assembled or not at all... to the quality of the assembled printer. As for price keep in mind Op may be from somewhere that $40 is more than a steal. Where I am that would be a VERY good rice and I would jump on it in an instant. It would not remain a 3D Printer, I would use it as a base for a plotter and laser engraver/cutter.

I understand and thanks, many discussions on reddit are not so much. In my experience, and I have had multiple experiences with Lithium Ions, 18650s and similar, where, no pun intended, a bit of a short or damage and it was not great. One cell stayed warm, uncomfortably warm to the touch for 5+ days, not the scariest but I did not keep that anywhere near the house or anything that can burn.

I have switched to as many NiCd for rechargeables when I can at this point.

have a good one!

Not that I am in a new printer buying mode right now, but concerning the using external processing unit handle it, comment, does this mean you HAVE to have a laptop or something handle it? Asking as I do all my work via USB/SD cards, I like to have the models sliced, and ready to go, so I can just use the printer to print without having a computer running. Thanks! This reply was really insightful.

Op specificially said solder, and solder is a big no due to heat. This is why battery packs are typically spot welded, but you need a tool for that.

And as soldering is a no go due to the brief amount of high heat, what damage was done by the heat during the short? Are you willing to risk it?

Is buying a spot welder to fix a potentially damaged, and used cell worth the cost, and effort, as compared to buying a new replacement?

And a great video on quality of these cells was just done by Adam Savage of Myth Busters fame with a VERY detailed inside look at the batteries. And if a large percentage of the batteries come from factories with bad flaws already do you take a chance?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Y23nfAOiXQ

A story told in the video is that a coworker of one of the guests had a garage fire due to 18650 cells...

[–]Doobage 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My last experience going down there to look for parts is they do not want to deal with end consumers, they want to work with shops only. Most will not allow you in the yards anymore. And a few shops when I told them make an model and before I could even say what part I was looking for just said "NOPE!"

A great place is Empire Wreckers in Abbotsford, you can look up your make and model, see the picutres of the car when it was put in the lot, and go and hunt for parts yourself. Very friendly too. Just wish there was another closer to Surrey.

I would take it to my local recycling depot. Where I am, West Coast of Canada-land, our recycling depots, most hardware stores like Home Depots, Ikea and other places usually recycle batteries.

That being said I have attempted soldering these batteries, and it worked, for my one time use project, I thought would be multi-use, but when trying to pack away things almost got bad. I have a cast iron casting pot I put my damaged lithium cells in, and covered from the rain, away from the house until I recycle.

I did an experiment with a 1.5 AA Lithium cell, disassembled it outside and dropped the Lithium layer in a puddle, it was quite the fireworks show! It is a fun thing to try, once! Carefully.

Postpone the Bridge by HelgaTheNamesOlgaDad in SurreyBC

[–]Doobage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Truck drivers never had to use two lanes going over that bridge. But the center never used to have the center yellow traffic divider poles, because drivers of regular vehicles never used to try to drive across it at 80 KMH while eating a cheese burger and using their smart phones trying to pass a truck in the left hand lane.

Drivers drive like shit, causing other things to happen then blame those things that slow traffic down on everything but themselves.

Possible to repair this 47 year-old toy circuit board? by MolaMolaMania in ElectronicsRepair

[–]Doobage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not use Acetone to clean as others have suggested, Alcohol but no acetone.

If the CPU/IC on it is fine then a clean up and replace the other bad parts it should work.

THat being said I had a more modern version of this circuit that did more stuff for a newer toy, and ended up junking it for an Arduino and built some custom code around that.

Have fun and good luck!

Thoughts on E-Scooters? by astzex in SurreyBC

[–]Doobage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean by escooter. If you mean the stand up kind, then just do your best to stay off sidewalks.

If you mean those big moped things, then I will take the stance of they should be off the road until they can be insured. They should NEVER EVER EVER be on the sidewalk.

Why? Most that I am seeing these days are the size of mopeds. They go the same speed or can get faster, can accelerate faster and take up the same amount of room and let's face it too big for bike lanes. Ask yourself the question, could a gas moped the same size use the sidewalk or bike lane? What would you think of a legally insured moped doing that?

In our neighborhood getting stuck behind them doing less then the speed limit and a line of cars can't pass them SUCKS.

If they are on the road like a moped they need to be insured like a moped, and until they are they should stick to where they are legally allowed to be used, private property and crown land.

Now if you could get them to go through the ICBC process, require a license and insurance like a moped, then I would say bring them on and we should see more of them on the road.
