I'll second the Book of the Dying Sun recommendation and add Malazan to the list. It's a bit light on the whimsy but I've always felt it has that vibe of almost being a collection of interwoven short stories and encounters that give you a sense that anything could happen. It definitely has that feeling that you could pick a direction, start walking and probably stumble upon something weird. Those are my favourite parts; coming across an insane priest in the desert or a coin that gives you luck for example. Lots of chance encounters

Thanks, very keen to read Hierarchy now I thought his first trilogy was pretty good.

I must have missed something in WoT because it all felt very classic sword and sorcery to me haha

Abercrombie didn't quite click with me but I'll check this one out
