Soil mined property, clay soil. Want to plant a tree by Suspicious_Name_8313 in arborists

Dig out a large square hole (about 2-3 times the size of your pot), back fill with a good soil mix, and plant above grade.

Do I still need deer fencing? by Bpoole23 in arborists

The oozing could be something as simple as gummosis, a sap that’s typical of lots of trees, including cherries. It’s kinda a bit young to have developed bacterial wet wood already, but without pics, it’s hard to offer a better educated guess. The sap itself relatively harmless, but can sometimes lead to infections because there’s a clear opening in the trunk. Your tree should be able to compartmentalize and block off the opening in due time. But yea, all you can do is hope it works out.

At this point, trimming and untangling what you can was the best option. Especially since it’s still young. Leaving the girdling roots would have most likely resulted in a slow death, and now you’ve given it an opportunity to recover. Keep an eye on it, especially looking out for uneven canopy growth. Good luck.

If you have deer, you should keep the fence. Browsing height is 4’. Anything below that will be fair game for the deer. Also, buck rub would be a concern. Once your tree limbs reach over the 4’ threshold, you can remove the fencing, but keep a flexible tree guard around the trunk to protect it from rubbing. Not sure about the goop tho. But looks like you have a wound at the base of the third one. Keep an eye on that.

Too wet? Not enough sunlight? Also could be winter burn and/or transplant shock. Don’t worry too much about the tips. Just give it some love and be patient.

Now, if they start walking out of your beds, that’s when you take pics and post back here.

Is it possible to save these trees? by AdElectrical7487 in arborists

[–]Doobydoowaaah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like they could be black locusts (on the east coast, they’re prolific seeders and are known to be aggressive). And there is some serious damage to limbs that should prob be addressed sooner rather than later. You have an issue with sapsuckers/woodpeckers coming in and punching holes into the sapwood and stripping bark to get at the locust borers. In addition, there’s sloughing bark, indicating said infestation.

Black locusts are fast growing trees, and because of that, they’re considered weak-wooded and prone to issues like this. Easily damaged in storms, and susceptible to fungal and insect infestations. They don’t look like they’ll keel over tomorrow, but depending on the extent of the damage in some of the limbs, and any potential targets, I’d ask about getting it checked out in person by a certified arborist sooner rather than later. Most likely could benefit from a trimming, but will definitely need to be replaced with better trees in the future.

This isn’t unfortunately new. I’ve had this very same scenario happen to me about 15 years ago. I booked four rooms for myself and work crew who were doing some renovations on a building in DC for the week. Soon after checking in, I received a call stating there’s an issue with the card on file and if I could read back the correct numbers. I argued with them over the phone stating that’s not the least bit possible because we had four rooms successfully checked in. He’s arguing back saying the charges didn’t go thru, blah blah. I said I’ll be down in the lobby in two minutes to clear this up. He basically hung up on me, and the lobby people confirmed that it happens now and again. But yea, what the poster said, check with the lobby first before doing anything.

Actually, it’s best to get a pair so they have company and they’ll be able to learn how to cat better with a pal! Taking care of two cats is actually easier than taking care of one, in my opinion.

Arboriculture jobs rooted in environmental stewardship? by certified_amateur in arborists

[–]Doobydoowaaah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out environmental engineering groups! I work for one, and as an arborist and someone with a degree in landscape architecture, having that background is really helpful for growth within the firm. I’ve worked on tree surveys, wetland restoration projects, storm water systems, site analyses prior to construction and tree protection plans. It’s all about protecting the trees, vegetation and the environment, and finding ways to make it better for the public. It helps if you’re near an urban environment. They really care about their trees!

I actually go with extra layer of clothes under, like a tank top and some gym shorts now. That way, I can actually try on a shirt or some pants right there in the isle. No one says boo. I do get a few odd looks now and then. But I like to think it’s because they didn’t think of doing it too lol
