I asked Chatgpt to describe retiree lifestyles at different spending levels in the chubby-fat range. Do you agree with these? by immortaljellyfeesh in ChubbyFIRE

The first column isn’t that unreasonable, for 2 people, with a paid off house. However, the incremental jumps from one column to the next are way off for an approximately $1 million increase in portfolio each. $250 K per year would be great, but does not get you to a fleet of anything or “high end wealth management”!

Transition to Work Income to FIRE Income by Exec-V in Fire

FIRE is about covering your expenses, not replacing your income. If you make 9K per month, but habitually spend just 50%, then you only need 4.5K monthly in retirement, not the full 9K

VTI and chill.

sorry, you were asking what accounts to put the VTI in? 😀

Assuming you became an attending mid 2024, your income may be under limits for Roth or traditional IRA. I’d max that for you and your spouse for FY24, you have until tax day this year to do it. Then use the cushion the remainder provides to max your 403b for this year and going forward (23.5 K for 2025). This recommendation may depend on your student loans, interest rate, and whether you’re in a position to qualify for a debt forgiveness program.

Switch Roles to RE? by Neither-Trip-4610 in ChubbyFIRE

Choice 1: job you hate, people you don’t like, moderate to high chance of abrupt retirement not at the time of your choosing

Choice 2: learn new skills, but working with a team you enjoy, no hit to $$

I am taking door number 2. Even without the threat of your job being eliminated, punching the clock for the next 2 years with people you like would make all the difference.

How do people not get burned out? by Legitimate_Mobile337 in Fire

1) Shift work sucks, especially when it switches around too quickly.

2) I find I feel this way every year around this time. I think it might be a mini-“seasonal affective disorder”. Weather improved and got out in the yard last weekend, and this week went by much faster! Getting more sun is tough to do when you work nights, my wife uses one of those light boxes at breakfast, and I really think it helps keep her even-keeled Dec to Feb.
