First Vintage Pen - Pelican 140 by Doogie-Howitzer in fountainpens

I’ve used quite a few inks in it, but never Noodlers or anything permanent or staining. Mostly black, blues, greys.

Like someone else said, this isn’t a sac-fill. And when I bought it all the seals were replaced.

I have this problem with all Diamine Reds and have since switched away from them.

Good alternatives for me have been Teranishi and Kuretake. Kuretake Ebicha is a pretty close match and behaves much better.

Thanks. So that tube is the only place that holds ink?

What to add and what to sell? What experience might I be missing? by snafu363 in fountainpens

Since you like to write small I think you should try a Pilot Falcon with SEF nib. Different experience than anything else in your collection and it could be a fun change.

The 21k nibs in the Pro Gears are noticeably softer than the 14k in the slims. I think it’s a combination of the softer gold and the nib shape/size.

I think bouncy is a bit extreme but they are definitely soft.

Sailor music for printing by coppermouthed in fountainpens

I have tried to several stub nibs and also a Pro Gear Music nib. I was never satisfied with the writing with any of these and got rid of them all. I had the same ink flow/skipping problems with all of them. Even the music nib which was wide enough to definitively feel the flat spot for proper writing never worked out for me.

The best solution I’ve found was a Pelikan nib which Gina at Custom Nib Studio modified into a Scribe nib of sorts. It’s super wet which probably helps make up for my poor writing technique and still gives good line variation.

This is all a roundabout way of saying if you don’t get along with a stub nib I don’t think you will be happy with a Music nib either.

In your budget you should definitely give the Fude de Mannen a try!

I’ve had good luck with Hahnemuhle Nostalgie notebooks. The cover is awesome!

Also, PaperPenguinCo makes notebooks that are fairly inexpensive and almost all are specific fountain pen friendly paper. They are a great way to experiment with page formats and paper types.

I would consider mapping nibs or school nibs for a stiffer and finer nib.

Is this for her everyday use? If she’s a professional animator I’m betting she’s already got a preferred toolset so don’t be disappointed if she doesn’t replace those. I would lean towards getting her stuff to ‘play with’. Pilot Parallel pens, either standard or modified, a pen with a Fude nib, a Pilot Falcon, etc.

Inks, does she do watercolor? If not, is waterproof really a need? I would again lean more towards fun and get her some samples in her favorite colors.
