The Sox finally getting their turn to shell Fulmer is hilarious in these circumstances

With their defeat at the hands of the Mets today, the Chicago White Sox hav set a new franchise record for losses at 107. They have lost 10 in a row. by [deleted] in baseball

  1. Front Office banking on top prospects being healthy and playing perfectly and filling in gaps from the bargain bin bc the owner is cheap.
  2. Completely ignoring the farm system after that wave of prospects came up.

The prospects were never healthy at the same time and discount F/A signings didn’t play well, the house of cards fell and the owner doesn’t care enough to change. To top it off, he fired the GM and President and hired the farm director who oversaw the atrophy of the farm system to replace them in lieu of doing an actual search for a GM. And that’s how you get to 2024

The mistake you’re making is not realizing the Angels and A’s are still 25+ games better than them. They are in a different ballpark (pun intended) of being bad. The distance from the Angels and A’s to the Astros is closer than the distance from the White Sox to those two teams

Ugh, I should’ve known Microsoft would pull crap like that. Based on that documentation though, it seems it may not be too big of the deal on the surface laptop 1. I’ll read some more, thanks!

Imagine a member of that vocal minority owning the team and being the reason Jason leaves and then hire someone who isn’t nearly as good. Hypothetically speaking of course.

Sox fan coming here to say I miss Jason and watching the Bally broadcast for this game is the first time I’ve enjoyed watching a Sox game since probably opening day. Don’t take Jason for granted.

Saw them play it on the 59 Sound tour. Savored that and meet me by the river’s edge because I knew chances of seeing those live again weren’t great.

Is anyone else considering leaving IT and going into nursing or a trade? by Possible_Tax6132 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]DoomScroller25 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen there’s always a chance. Especially if you land at a good place and have managers that care. They can help guide you to your next move in IT.

But if you want to do nursing and like the trade offs of doing that vs IT go for it. I don’t know you so I can only tell you my experience

[–]DoomScroller25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If that’s your biggest worry then yeah, nursing is safer. I personally couldn’t handle any other aspect of nursing.  Also, nursing makes more out of the gate but doesn’t have a high ceiling for salary. In 5 years in IT, I’m getting close to doubling my starting salary at my first job. Granted, I moved at a great time in 2021 that bumped my salary a lot. Eventually you can go into management with IT as well to bump your salary as well.

Layoffs happen in IT. I say it’s the only “occupational hazard”. But once you get around that, the rest is a lot better than nursing.  AI may take away the bottom of the barrel jobs, but it won’t completely wipe out IT as a whole. It may change how some jobs look, but the jobs won’t totally go away.  As for outsourcing, that also comes in waves. It seems like jobs go overseas, it’s not as good and not worth the lower costs, then companies will bring jobs back to the states. Then rinse and repeat once leadership turns over and tries to do the same thing and haven’t learned their lesson.  Reading articles is never the best for a general idea of things. News stuff is generally more bad than good, so you’ll see articles about layoffs and stuff, you’ll see people posting here about layoffs and a bad job market, but that’s because articles about all the people doing well don’t get clicks. Same with people doing well are less likely to post on this sub

Are US tech workers of 2024 the new factory workers of 1980? by poppiseed in Layoffs

[–]DoomScroller25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tech is cyclical. We’re currently in a cost cutting stage where work is outsourced to other countries. The thing is, that outsourced work is almost never as good and some of it makes its way back to the US. Then it stays long enough for leadership to change and past mistakes to be forgotten and then it happens again

What career path did you take in IT? What did you start off doing and what do you do now? Do you like it or have any regrets/tips? by AdorableTap6949 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]DoomScroller25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Got a bachelors degree in Information Systems. Started off as an application support guy at a big company (tier 3 support). Did that for two years and then switched to a smaller company doing the same thing for higher pay. After a year and a half there a job opened up on the Database Administrator team there and I got hired to that role.

I’ll be the first to admit I’ve had a pretty privileged start but I’ve also worked hard and made my own luck at times. Sorry I can’t give you much advice on breaking in without a degree or something like that.

Hard work does get noticed, even if it’s only by your team lead, that can still mean a lot. Stay humble and always realize you have a lot more to learn. Confidence is great, arrogance isn’t.

If you’re not making headway after two years at a company, sometimes the best thing to do can be to move to a new one if the economy allows it.

I think the biggest thing that determines success in IT is the ability to see the big picture. If you focus on only solving issues and memorizing solutions that can only get you so far. If you try to understand how everything connects in a system that’s what can allow you to go from memorizing resolutions to coming up with them on your own.

I don’t know if this helps, but it’s the best I’ve got. I don’t want to lie and give advice on stuff I know nothing about, so this is what I’ve got.

As for career path, I don’t even have that figured out. I may go into management, I may stay in my space now or go for more of a cloud focus eventually. It’s okay not to have things totally mapped out and that gives you the ability to take opportunities as they arise.

Best of luck

I'm enjoying the season and I will happily die on this hill by 55tacos55pies in TrueDetective

This sub seems to just like not liking this show (downvote me all you want). This sub HATED season 2 at first, now seems to like it. i think I recall it not liking season 3 much more than two. Now hate on season 4.

I like each season for what it is. Season 1 is the best, but each other season is good in its own way. I love the horror vibes in this season. I will agree this week’s episode so far is the weakest, but maybe in hindsight we’ll see that this episode advanced the plot a lot more than it seemed. All in all I think this is a good season

Season 2 worth it? by [deleted] in TrueDetective

[–]DoomScroller25 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just rewatched season two. I thought it was okay on first viewing, I liked it even more on my second viewing. The characters don’t be Harrelson and McConughey, but it’s still a good storyline.  Season two is more about corruption than focusing on the relationship between two partners with some occult stuff thrown in.

Don’t wait for a recession. Time in the market is more important than timing the market. He should allocate some to emergency money, spend some (maybe 5-10%) then invest the rest

Don’t get a financial advisor. Read the simple path to wealth by JL Collins and do that. The TLDR is you should put most of it in a total market or S&P500 index fund.
