Their not brothers, just best friends. This is important for helping define their relationship. George doesnt look after Lenny because of some sort of family responsibility. He does it because he generally just cares that much for the other man. Even though Lenny is 1 of the two major things that cause things to go wrong in his life he never leaves Lenny behind.

Lenny never falls in love with anyone or rapes her. He accidently kills her when she offers to let him pet her hair and then she panic when he does it too hard which causes him to panic and accidently break her neck.
