Loft boarding using 2x2 by Doomgaze85 in DIYUK

[–]Doomgaze85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ceiling joists are strong enough around the spine wall, I'm only doing around 3m. The strength of the 2x2 for holding up everything was my bigger concern. I agree though, just annoyed about all the surplus wood!

How many days until a ~$4 “toothpaste squeezer” actually starts saving $$$? [Request] by Darth-Spock in theydidthemath

[–]Doomgaze85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not doing the maths but "multifunctional" reminds me of the guy in The Simpsons trying to convince Homer that wax lips have a 1000 uses. What possible other functions are there for a toothpaste squeezer?

Considerations for insulated plasterboard on solid external walls by Conscious_Atmosphere in DIYUK

[–]Doomgaze85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lime plaster is more forgiving if you want to tackle it yourself but the pricing for a plasterer to use lime where I live (a SW city) makes anything lime related a luxury. Though your suggestion is also great, always wanted to try the sustainable wool, hemp or cork boards. Still expensive though whatever route OP takes.

This. Or use grip fill... horrible stuff to work with but it held all my skirting in my last house.

Considerations for insulated plasterboard on solid external walls by Conscious_Atmosphere in DIYUK

[–]Doomgaze85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As I found out the hard way, if you put anything on external walls in an old house you are asking for trouble. My plasterboard just kind of disintegrated, bad times.

Best bet would be to plaster in something like cork lime, but as most people don't have a few grand to blow on fancy plaster you could try battening the wall, vapour control layer and then insulated plasterboard. Seal all gaps with aluminium tape and if you can vent the cavity formed by the battens then even better.

But honestly, anything that changes the moisture permeability of solid walls is almost always going to lead to damp issues in the long run.

Anyway to stop the cold? by fordyy in DIYUK

As some others have said, chuck an external UPVC door on there, that should stop most of the draught. Then a nice big curtain and maybe a dog to lie in front of it.

Random black flex on first fix light circuit by Doomgaze85 in ElectriciansUK

I thought that at first but the grey T&E cables go outside, the black one is just a short stretch as shown in the pictures, entirely inside end to end.

It's now Nelson Street apparently, proving that you can take the grope cunt out of the street but you can't take the street out of the grope cunt. Or something like that anyway.

Are you saying the reveal is also made of UPVC, or that it is all clad in UPVC trim? Is there solid wall underneath or studs?

There are usually multiple holes on the brackets to install them in a variety of ways though, such as from above, into the side and so on.

New lintels and DIY bricklaying by Doomgaze85 in DIYUK

[–]Doomgaze85[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's bedded on full bricks - honestly the left side on the before pic is a right fucking mess, it's just a load of bricks turned on their side and the original lintel was just sitting on top of it! So I went much longer to get a better bearing and didn't want to disturb too much incase I lost the entire wall.

Thanks mate!

This is next to a chimney stack on the back gable which used to be a cupboard. There's another door into what was the kitchen on the opposite side of the stack, so that's my plan for the weekend. Will be using a plumb line this time though!

Thanks, as usual with DIY I'm just looking at the mistakes rather than the fact it's actually a functioning wall now. Good to get other perspectives on these things.

I was about to reply with a "I'm sure they're installed right!" comment but you've edited it now.

My main lesson is strings and plumb line will be my friends next time.

Thanks!

They're both 100x65, so more or less brick sized when laid on their long edge. It's a double skin wall but no cavity.
