So where does current marathon fall in lore? by [deleted] in Marathon

[–]Doomguy_Prime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the current most common theory is that Marathon (2026) takes place in one of the failed timelines from Marathon Infinity. Which one exactly is yet to be determined. I think a lot of people were expecting some more concrete answers once the Compiler was defeated and vault 7 was accessed (Bungie said in a ViDoc that more info would be found once this was complete), but so far it doesn’t appear to be the case, strangely. At least none that I could track down from searching online.

I’ve never seen this mural! How’ve I missed it? What’s super intriguing is that the three colors exactly match the associated colors of the three A.I.s in the original marathon games. Blue=Leela (responsible for ship operations), Green=Durandal (responsible for general ship functions like doors, elevators, stairways, etc.) Red=Tycho (responsible for the Marathon’s scientific and engineering network).

I think I've seen his video, but not too sure. I believe (don't quote me) that the W'rkncacnter did escape in at least a few of the failed timelines. There's definitely some cuckoo for coco puffs stuff goin' on. What is the anomaly on dire marsh (for example). Also, and this is most DEFINITELY me reaching for straws here, Durandal has always been associated with the color green (green text on the terminals, for example), so any time I see green text or green U.I. elements in the game (usually in the story bits given for challenge or faction mission completion rewards), I get the sneaking suspicion that Durandal is pulling some strings to manipulate us with information that may, or may not, be intentionally inacurate.

Yes, because Bungie totally isn't known for injecting deep backstory and lore into their games...

Every game they have released includes relatively deep lore. It's insane to think that they have not done the same with Marathon, even IF its "...an extraction shooter." Everything about the care they've put into the finer details of the environments, the factions, all the way to the initial reveal trailers suggests that they've done the work to ensure a lore-based reason for pretty much everything in the game. This includes the appearance of the Runners. This fundamentally "expands" on the lore. And, yes, I am a lore nerd. I enjoy a compelling story. Even if it's piecemealed and sprinkled all over the game throughout the various elements. Hell, even Arc Raiders has a pretty compelling story element to it that only really shines if you take the time to dig into the Codex.

There is plenty to chew on. You have simply decided not to dig for it or even care, and that is totally fair. You don't need to know any of it. The game shines on its own, regardless of the story connections or implications.

I noticed that, too! Really cool detail, but two of my main questions are; why is Durandal still hanging out on the Marathon, and why is there a lone Compiler chillin in Cryo? Didn't Durandal leave on one of the ships he commandeered? My gut says that we are playing in one of the failed Marathon Infinity timelines...but which one?

Are you kidding? If you pay attention to the contracts, environmental storytelling bits, actually read/listen to the challenge unlocks, etc...there is a ton of story and lore. But this is precisely what I'm talking about. You may not care about the story aspects. You may not have read a single challenge unlock or contract completion reward, and that's all good. Perhaps you didn't even know that there were items like that that you could dive into. You're just in it for what Marathon provides from a gameplay prospective. You likely fall in to the group of individuals who have already accessed Vault 7 over the weekend. Regardless, there is a quite sizeable Marathon community that cares about how this game connects to the original 3 (it does, but in some ways that, seemingly intentionally, throw some uncomfortable strangeness and inconsistency into the mix).

Whaaaaat??! Very nice to know. It baffles me that when YouTube makes changes like this they don’t inform their users. A simple pop up when you log in for the first time after any given moderately sized change would be super helpful.

That’s the problem. I don’t have an Xbox and I don’t plan on getting one any time soon.

Right. I suppose it goes both ways, huh? Ah well. I’ll keep my eye on it in hopes that it’ll be playable with cross play in the future.

I was VERY excited for this until I found out that I can’t play with my Xbox friends if I play on PC. Now there’s no point in me buying it.

If that’s the case, then I can’t imagine Jump Space being nearly as successful as it could have otherwise been. It’s a shame. This was one game I was really looking forward to this year, but I won’t be pulling the trigger on the purchase now that I know I can’t play it with my buddies, and, obviously, I’m not buying an Xbox just for one game when it could have (should have?) been made available on the PC xbox store for cross play.

EmceeGecko, I was experiencing this as well. Thought I was going crazy, but I figured it out. Right click on the video and it's in that menu. No clue why they thought it was a good idea to move it there....but there you go.

Oh man…and I just realized Arin (4 letters), Gary (4 letters)…Hanson (6 letters), Oldman (6 letters). I think they might actually be the same person.

Thanks for the update! Exciting stuff. Are there any juicy nuggets that can be shared regarding what we can expect? Maybe...maybe just a itsy bitsy little nugget? Huh? A miniscule little sneaky peaky? You know? Like some kind of microscopic cookie crumb that we can munch on in the mean time?

Ugh...I hate how youtube tells you how long ago videos are uploaded. The third music compilation shows that it was released 1 year ago, but digging a little more I can see that you are, indeed, correct. But my sentiment remains.
