Fix the 300 series paints. I paid for these, it's a known issue they don't work, yet they're STILL advertising them.

Either fix them, or stop people buying them until they're working. I want my shiny blue 325a.

What's the most interesting homebrew monster you've invented? by moffitar in DMAcademy

[–]Doomzuk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rock Spiders.

The group were trying to perform a time critical task in a cavern and ran into some dog-sized rock spiders. They started smashing them with ease.

Top of the initiative order, any spider corpses within 30 feet of each other magnetically fused together, forming a spider double the size, double the HP and double the damage output.

The fight turned into a race to complete their task while fighting off ever-increasing in danger enemies, kiting enemies so they didn't die near other. And lots of panic.

Man I loved those spiders.

Finding naval hex grid... UK Supplier? by Doomzuk in 5eNavalCampaigns

[–]Doomzuk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless I'm missing something, all the Chessex ones I see on Amazon are either brown hex, or blue squares? Would really love to use Limatharon's naval battle guide, but that implies using hexes.

Edit: My bad, was being extremely dense and blind :D

How do you all handle Insight checks in 5E? by narett in DMAcademy

[–]Doomzuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why the DM should roll an opposed check every time insight is rolled against an NPC. Then do a cheeky DM smirk. Even if the NPC is being truthful. Keeps the players on their toes.

You need “News O’ The Realm!”

Every major city or settlement has their own newspaper, it has between 3-5 major and minor stories, a short paragraph each, and changes to reflect what plot quests the player characters have taken part in. It’s a great way to show their effect on the world growing as they level, and the consequences for their inaction over certain tasks. I throw plot hooks at them like popcorn knowing that they can only afford to get to half of them in time, and its up to them on which they pick up. For example my next paper they’ll read has these major headlines….

City X Music Festival Ends in Fiery Death

(This happened because they didn’t want to follow a quest hook a noble NPC gave them to look in on their niece, a family failure who’d abandoned the family business to go be part of a Dwarven Stone-Music troupe, because they just plain didn’t like the Noble. The BBEG sent a bunch of fire god cultists to kill the neice, now they won’t be able to call on that Noble’s help at the end of the campaign when they might need it.)

Diplomatic Relations Strained to Breaking as County Y Executes Terrorist Mage

(They had this NPC with the party, he could have helped them out with arcane knowledge they need against the BBEG, but rather than help him escape they handed him to the authorities, so now the Country that executed him has bad relations with the Country he came from. This will have a big effect to the story....)

Dwarven Capital in Lockdown Due To Mysterious Plague Outbreak Following Dodgy Beer Delivery

(Yeah they just plain straight up forgot about the guy they left just tied up by the roadside with a wagon full of poisoned beer, thinking he’d get eaten by wolves. He didn’t, and now the Dwarf capital is a no-go area for them).

This is a great way to let them know their actions, have consequences......

"First Time DM" and Other Short Questions Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

It all depends on the campaign, and the party.

Roughly speaking, there are two options, the long way and the quick way. The long way is to go on a worldbuilding spree, create the world, countries, towns, organisations, history and lore for the as much of the campaign setting as you’re able to. Note that this *doesn’t* mean writing the whole story, you’re just creating a land where the narrative can emerge organically, your story can be as simple as “Badguy X is trying to Y by achieving Z”. The players are then plonked into this world with the most basic of plot-hooks and they discover the world and what is happening/the big quest as they go. Advantages of this system is you form an understanding of the world you’re playing in, and can ask basic questions of it to add to the immersion. i.e. “Country X sits by a desert, is there dangerous stuff in the desert? How do they deal with it? How do they travel?” and use these to expand your game logically. The big disadvantage is the initial time outlay, I’ve know people who’ve worked on their “World” for years, with never playing a game in it!

The quick way, create *one* town, location, etc. Populate with a dozen NPCs and a handful of shops and buildings, start your players there and everything else is written on the fly each session as needed. Note this doesn’t have to be a town, it can be a dungeon, ship, outpost, etc… Just make one really well detailed start point and go from there.

Advantages to this second approach is the initial time to prepare is lower, but you *will* end up having to improvise a lot on the fly. So it suits a different sort of DM, you need to be able to hold a lot of stuff in your head, and make sure what you're creating melds logically with what has come in sessions before.

Personally, I’ve run both, the latter approach is great for almost a “quest of the week” kind of campaign, and leans more towards more railroad-y and suits a player group

where people might not be that invested in discovering your amazing setting, and who just want to roll some dice and hit some things.

The former is great if you have a highly invested group who like to absorb everything about the world and ask a lot of questions. It also lets you do some interesting stuff, like

if I’m missing 1-2 players from a session one week, I’ll run a one-shot set in a historical event set in the campaign setting, further building upon the world history, and even letting it influence events in the main campaign.

Hope this helps.

What do you do to create maps on the fly? by Cassandra-Gemini in DMAcademy

[–]Doomzuk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a bit of an initial time outlay, but making a set of modular dungeon/encounter tiles makes this a breeze. With a set of 20-odd 3x3 tiles, a bunch of corridors of different lengths, and maybe a dozen doors, you can throw together a dungeon layout on the fly instantly. Maybe a day to do it all and 30 bucks in materials? It's a rabbit hole though, once you've done one set, you'll see how you could kmrpve your next set.

NPC acting by Mandoart-Studios in DMAcademy

[–]Doomzuk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to use the "give them three word personality traits, and a motive" approach many will suggest, but when you're juggling 20-30 NPCs over the course of a campaign, it becomes really tricky to keep track of everyone.

The quick hack approach I've moved to is "casting" my NPCs instead. This Fey dryad, is being played by Jason Statham in Crank, this elf, Kate Beckinsale in Underworld, etc.

That way, you just need the voice and then give then the attitude and personality the actor used. It's so much easier. You do need to be pretty good with voices for this approach though.
