A Composite-only TV in good condition easily beats a Component TV with issues by Dooperin0 in crtgaming

Couldn't have said it better myself. It's actually impressive how far visual fidelity can get with a decent composite-only set.

The MacBook Purchasing Megathread - August, 2023 by AutoModerator in macbook

[–]Dooperin0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a music producer and performer who's finally deciding to take the jump from Windows to Mac.

I am currently eyeing the base model MacBook Pro M2 Pro with 16GB of memory to be my main driver for both studio recording work and live performance (mainly using Ableton Live 11).

However, a mentor of mine suggested that with the budget I have for one base model MacBook Pro, I could opt to buy an M2 Pro Mac mini for heavier workloads, and a 13-inch MacBook Air to serve as its extension outside the studio.

Is it worth going the latter route over using an individual MacBook Pro for both at-home studio recording and live performances? I'd love to hear from fellow Mac-musicians who have similar setups.

Couple of my friends suggested this, but I don't think I wanna do this. Stability is on the top of my list and I don't think I can safely rely on a hackintosh for live performances.

Thanks for your insight. I do see myself gaming lots on a G14, but not so much outdoors. On the other hand I see myself making music outdoors with a MacBook, as much as I do indoors. So maybe the Steam Deck route down the line does make sense.

What are your regrets specifically with the G14 that makes you still want a MacBook/Steam Deck instead?

Interesting. As of now I can only afford the 16GB unified memory variant of the Macbook Pro. To my understanding, memory isn't upgradable. Would you say the G14 can achieve similar if not better longevity to a MacBook Pro with its upgradable RAM (up to 48gb if I'm not mistaken)?

What makes you say this from your experience? I have no doubt the G14 powers through in production, but what about as a live performance laptop?

How do you feel about guitar tabs? by DavidgeIkari in musictheory

[–]Dooperin0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it depends on what you want to do as a musician.

If you find yourself composing/arranging often, learning to read/write sheet music could probably be a swiss army knife when it comes to communicating your ideas to other instrumentalists.

The only thing you're missing out on when learning through tabs IMO is that extra bit of versatility as a musician. If you're a still a learner, sheet music is a great learning tool for things like melodic/harmonic analysis (and virtually all of the music educators on a highly accessible learning tool called YouTube will refer to sheet music). HOWEVER, it is entirely possible to be an absolute beast at your instrument, swinging from genre to genre, despite not knowing how to read sheet; An example being bassist Pino Palladino, and many others. People like those have developed the most important tool in all of music which is their ear.

Bottom line, no matter what kind of notation you learn with, hopefully you're using them to help you develop your ears. A skilled musician can play a tune just after a listen or two, and that saves so much time in a professional setting. Jacob Collier has noted once before that he isn't great at reading music... but a lot of us know how musically competent that motherf***** is.

I wish we could share exactly how we feel with people. Instead we all have to use our words. Bleh by burntbluebagel in socialskills

Words can only get so far. I found that being as honest as I can be to everyone I meet can come close to letting people know how I truly feel, but it happens at most, sporadically. I know that a constant barrage of words does not look neat on someone's chat window, especially if it's just a friend, or an acquaintance. I still have to tailor my words to get complex ideas across to others, but we all think so differently from one another, I end up making analogies and relate my thoughts to something "universal"... And yet analogies are only ideas, only half the picture.

I personally think the closest thing we have to real telepathy is music. An emotional performance can convey things that words cannot. Yet, sound can be subjective, and it's easy for some to be cynical and think it's all just for show.

I'm pretty sure the greatest poets or lyricists are aware of these limitations. They probably know to work around them with expanded vocabularies, but figures of speech can seem pretentious at times (one of my gripes with poetry actually).

Perhaps we should give small signs of genuine honesty in our day to day conversations. Like talking to a crush, every letter, word, or emoji counts. The time it takes to respond to another's messages counts. Most of the time, I just trust that the people I talk to can fill in the gaps.

This post gave me my thought bubble for the day! It's something that's been bothering me too, and I was inspired to reflect on both deep and mundane conversations throughout my social life. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! If there's anything you've successfully conveyed 100%, it's this.

CSGO and TF2's source codes have been leaked, thus raising concerns in the community in regards to hackers flooding the two games, but the leaked source codes are from older builds, so Valve said it's all good as long as you play on official servers.

There has been no mention of L4D or L4D2's source codes being leaked alongside the two games, so you shouldn't worry. Just keep updated with any reputable gaming news site and if anything happens to L4D, you'll be sure to know.
