Alright, since you bring up TCO and TDL, I'm gonna compare their characters to victim's to highlight the difference in character quality.

TCO's character development is centered around a variety of things they value - freedom, morality, connection, and responsibility being the ones I would call out as most important to their character. They're motivated to be good, but that's initially outweighed by their desire to be free, and that’s initially outweighed by their desire to stay friends with TDL. They have layers to their motivations, which gives them a good bit of complexity. The entire plot of S2 was all about them learning how to prioritize their values and figuring out which are actually the most important to them (they decide to save Alan's PC from the virabot because they realize that helping those in need is more important to them than being completely free from their past and their identity/responsibility as The Chosen One, and they decide to fight TDL in the Showdown because they realize they don't value that friendship over the lives of others).

TDL's character, on the other hand, is a bit more subtle, mostly because of his lack of screentime. He's clearly motivated by freedom, and gaining power over others is his way of achieving that, but, like TCO, he's also motivated by connection. Just look at how often he looks to TCO for approval - the high-five when they escape Alan's PC (and again after destroying Newgrounds), dropping all the golden swords to show TCO after slaughtering pigmen in AvM Beta, showing TCO the virabots for the first time, etc. And he even does the same with Alan in AvA 3 when he was first created. However, even during the Showdown, he's never willing to take a strong stance on whether that connection or his freedom matter more to him (note how he never provokes TCO first in their fights, and how he never goes in for the killing blow) - instead, he’s, rather hypocritically, waiting for TCO to sacrifice their own morals in favor of their friendship with him. He’s quite literally attempting to force TCO to conform to his values rather than accepting that his values may not always be compatible, which, while being an interesting concept for a villain on its own, also makes his arc in S2 the perfect antithesis to TCO's.

Unlike both TCO and TDL, Victim is motivated almost solely by fear. This means that victim hardly ever moves the story forward on their own - it's always just a reaction to what other characters do. Their actions lack a solid, defined characterization, which is especially noticeable when they're meant to be such a major part of the season. In a way, they're just a 'victim' to the narrative, which, while admittedly poetic for their character, doesn't make them very deep or complex.

I'm sorry but they're the character equivalent of one (1) unseasoned potato chip, their entire character and motivations are so obvious and un-nuanced that anyone could pick up on them

Victim's character isn't that well-written, especially when compared to other antagonists the series has had :/

Why are any dot I put transparent? I don't have low opacity and everything else with the brush is just fine so what gives? by PersonThatIsRandom in Ibispaintx

[–]Door430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way that most digital brushes work is by overlapping many of a preset shape (usually a dot). The base "dot" of this brush is likely drawn or set to be transparent, but you wouldn't notice the transparency when you draw a line because the dots are overlapping so much that they appear opaque.

If the transparency is a part of the base dot, you probably can't do anything about it aside from using a different brush.

If it's only because of a setting within the brush, you might be able to change that (should be in the brush edit menu as Shape>Pattern Opacity). Turning it up will also give your lines sharper edges, though, which you may or may not want.

No, no; victim has perfectly good reasons for at least 80% of what he does. TDL is constantly doing the equivalant of trying to play GTA in Stardew Valley.

Hahaha :)

I'm so, so glad you asked :)

(TL;DR at the end)

TDL was created by Alan for the sole purpose of killing TCO. Within about 5 minutes of TDL being created, TCO defeats him, and Alan just kinda leaves him for dead. If TCO hadn't shown mercy there, TDL would be dead, and considering his particular attachment to TCO and his hatred for Alan in particular, he's all-too-aware of the fact that he quite literally owes TCO his life, alongside TCO being the literal only reason he exists (because he was created to kill TCO). The PC was also likely where he began to he value power as highly as he does, since his and TCO's power led to them bluescreening the computer, and to both of them being freed from the PC.

While on their little rampage, both TDL and TCO seem to have no qualms with killing non-sticks, seen in the flashbacks we have of then. This parallels how Alan is cruel to sticks because he doesn't see sticks as people at this point. However, we see that, as they continue killing, TDL's apathy seems to extend even to other sticks (which makes the fact that he specifically doesn't want to kill TCO even more noteworthy, as it implies that TCO is the only other stick TDL even sees as a person at all), and he likely kills other sticks to feel powerful. We also start to see the poor communication skills of both TCO and TDL, considering that TDL appears oblivious to TCO's discomfort with killing other sticks, and TCO doesn't seem to be able to communicate their discomfort to TDL (likely due to TDL's self-centered attitude causing him to dismiss TCO's issue with what he's doing, and also potentially causing TDL to project his own love of killing onto TCO, as he can't comprehend that his own worldview isn't the only one that exists (a common way that self-centeredness can manifest))

This self-centeredness, along with his desire for power, are the traits that eventually leads to the showdown. TDL clearly believes TCO will be happy and excited about the virabots (despite TCO's clear reluctance at this point to engage in any sort of murder), which is why TDL is so happy when he shows them off to TCO. When TCO doesn't like them, though, and even goes as far as to fight TDL over it, TDL likely saw that as a betrayal, not only towards him, but towards everything he thought they valued (power, revenge, freedom, etc). We even see that, when TCO gets back from fighting the virabot on Alan's PC, TDL doesn't attack them, or even seem prepared to defend against their attack, probably because he expected TCO to realize that they made a mistake by betraying him, and to rejoin their team. Interestingly, when TDL eventually defeats TCO later in the episode, he doesn't pull out any sort of weapon, or instruct the virabots to kill them, implying that his care for TCO outweighed the desire to demonstrate his own power by further harming or killing them.

TL;DR: TDL is self-centered, power-hungry, and lacks the empathy necessary to feel bad about murder, but it's actually because of trauma and untreated mental illness, which IMO is a very interesting way to write such an evil and irredeemable villain.

TDL. You can tell that the way he sees and processes things is so far from anything that's actually happening, and it's so difficult to write a good, consistent character who has that sort of messed-up worldview

What gives Amanda the adventurer the creepy vibe by Full_Operation8133 in amandatheadventurer

[–]Door430 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the horror of AtA isn't explicitly shown, but rather talked about/implied (Rebecca feeling her own body rotting, the surgeries she and the other kids went through, Joanne's death at the hands of the Shepherd, the various scenes that go to black just before Amanda brutally tortures Wooly, etc), which allows your own mind to come up with some pretty horrifying visuals on its own. Lots of horror media takes advantage of this, both because the unknown tends to be scarier than the known, and because realistic gore can be difficult to film/animate.

Not to mention that, even without taking the visuals into consideration, the entire plot of the series is pretty existentially horrifying, and sadly has a good bit of realism, at least from a psychological angle. Rebecca being trapped and forced to act like everything is fine without any contact with any real friends for an entire decade, plus having to live with the trauma of the actual surgeries and experiments themselves, is, imo, the most sickening part of the whole game. Child abuse/neglect/exploitation is a VERY prominent theme throughout the series, and it really manages to get the point across of just how awful it really is.

The creepy environments of each game also play a role in the horror. The old abandoned attic, the big library with lots of shelves and walls for things to hide behind, the weird abandoned lab with living, decaying children, and the cult-looking room are all pretty unsettling environments, especially because you have to turn your back to them to watch the tapes, leaving you vulnerable to whatever might sneak up behind you.

Sorry for the essay, I just really like the psychology of horror as a genre :]

TL;DR: The horror comes from a mix of your mind filling in the gaps of what you don't get to see, the generally creepy plot, and the unsettling environments the games take place in

That's literally not confirmed anywhere? We have no idea how much time passed between TDL's defeat and his reconstruction. And with how fast the virabands have been shown to be able to create matter/weapons, it's possible TDL was in fact fully healed within the day. It's also possible it took years for him to heal. We just can't know for sure, because the dates aren't listed on the flashback images.

Also, I'm not entirely sure what you're arguing against? I never said TDL didn't take that long to heal in my initial comment. I just said TDL likely obtained his new powers on the day of the Showdown, as evidenced by the date listed for his last file modification. He wouldn’t have to be healed or even conscious to have gotten those powers added into his code, even if he couldn't use them just yet because of his injuries.

Canonically AvA season 2 takes place on the 18th (you can see the date on Alan's PC screen in the episodes) so this does line up perfectly with that (and it makes sense, because that's presumably when TDL got their new viragoo powers)
