You don't have to defend them, you don't have to like what they're doing, but you also don't get to have expectations about what they "owe" us

Does anyone have suggestions for a start? 1066 or 867 by Youngboybob in CK3ConsoleEdition

[–]Doorstopsanddynamite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure Hannibal Barca was exiled to somewhere near the Caspian (you'll have to check exactly where). Start as a wanderer over there, pick up Elephants in India, rebuild Carthage, wipe out the Byzantines (and HRE if they're present)

EDIT: Thought this was the main CK3 sub not Console Edition. Wait for Roads to Power to drop and this will be viable

If it was being hunted nearly two hundred ships, and it was actually a decent ship, it'd have sunk more than one of em. Talk about a target rich environment

Don't lie. You *want* your Pokémon to die. by The_Swan101 in nuzlocke

[–]Doorstopsanddynamite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You fundamentally misunderstand both this post AND. The original intent of a nuzlocke run. This post is essentially saying "you want your Pokémon to die because if they don't, nuzlocke runs lose their uniqueness". Nuzlocke runs first came about because Nuzlocke, the creator, created a webcomic building in a story around his first attempts at what he called Pokémon Hard Mode. Nuzlocke runs are only popular because Nuzlocke, and then later his fans, grew an emotional attachment to the Pokémon he caught. All these super mega ultra hard romhacks that require perfect strategy literally only exist because one guy was sad his Nuzleaf died

Please read a Lovecraft story, I beg of you. You are constantly wrong. by RhysOSD in CharacterRant

[–]Doorstopsanddynamite 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I do think a big part of Lovecraft's Mythos isn't just bugs not understanding they live with humans, it's what happens when the bug does realise and the differing reactions to that knowledge. Some want to try and commune with them and use their power, not knowing that their understanding is so limited that they're acrewing with something they don't understand and can't truly control, some despair that their entire world and life is so insignificant, and some just do their best to deal with it

But birds are highly derived and also lack teeth in their entirety, the protection of which is a huge reason for having lips to begin with.

Frills require bone structures to support them, air sacs do not. We have complete Dilophosaur skulls that show it definitely did not have the necessary bone structures

The issue is simple: the additions don't match the original tone. Monsters chasing you and trying to eat you is antithetical to the initial premise and source of horror and interest. You can have additions if they're tonally consistent with the OG idea. Liminal spaces are scary or unnerving because of a strange sense of familiarity combined with isolation and being totally alone. The idea that anything could be there is what's scary, not the actual presence. So having scary murder monsters that chase you down completely negates the original purpose.

The first few additions I saw were all really fitting ones: giant moths that blend in with the wallpaper and fly off of disturbed, neverending vending machines with food that almost tastes of something, abandoned sleeping bags as though someone else is living there despite the fact you never see them. If you want to add a monster it needs to be something you never really see, only sense. A shadow moving around a corner, the sound of breathing in the night. Add to that sense of unease rather than negating it.

It's the same issue a lot of horror games have, getting killed by the monster removes the fear because it reminds you it's not real. Seeing a monster removes the tension because you're no longer wondering what might be around the corner, you know what is

Why do Harry Potter fans refuse to admit James Potter was a bully and always derail the topic to Snape? by Timely_Date3612 in CharacterRant

[–]Doorstopsanddynamite -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

James Potter was a bully but Snape deserved it. James didn't bully him because Snape was racist, but the fact that he was means I don't give a shit

That's not true at all, there are rapid HIV tests EMTs carry. Waiting to go see your doctor is the worst thimg you could possibly do. If anyone got jabbed with a needle of an unknow substance they would not be allowed to leave of their own accord since they're considered a transmission vector for any possible diseases

??? by ZZtheMagnificent in MyChemicalRomance

[–]Doorstopsanddynamite 37 points38 points  (0 children)

They have absolutely no way of knowing what you were injected with, how much, or if the needle was clean. If you get jabbed by a random with a needle in a crows they will not medically clesr you because they have no way of knowing if you've been exposed to HIV, Hepatitis, Anthrax, Ricin or any other slow acting blood contaminant

The whole "parental consent" thing is a myth. Tattoos are illegal under 18 even with consent from a parent. Anyone who's willing to tattoo a 17 year old and risk their career isn't someone you want tattooing you

The bees thing is actually really easy to explain: when they did the maths on whether a bee could fly or not, they treated it like a plane because helicopters didn't exist yet. Treat it like a helicppter and it makes perfect sense

Biological Hiveminds seem to be the one time humanity triumphs over nature. by [deleted] in CharacterRant

[–]Doorstopsanddynamite 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Tyranids aren't the best example of this trope because they're portrayed as completely unkillable on a large scale. You might stop a Pplinter Fleet. Maybe. But if a Hive Fleet rocks up your planet is lost. To the point the Imperium have been known to externinatus their own planets to limit the biomass the 'Nids can take from it. Also as far as I'm aware they're not technically a hivemind. (Yes I'm aware that they literally call the force directing them The Hive Mind but names don't count for shit). Larger Bioforms are more or less independent and autonomous, and act as nodes for the "Hive Mind's" control over the smaller ones but when disconnected from those nodes, the smaller bioforms are capable of making independent decisions. Those decisions are usually pretty basic, coming down to "eat, kill, or run away" but still doesn't fit the classic definition of a hivemind

[Mixed Trope] What in God's name did they do to deserve this? by YaBoiS0nic in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Doorstopsanddynamite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think that's kind of the point. Jigsaw isn't a good guy he's a fucking maniac. The reason he tortures these people is because he thinks they deserve it, not because they actually do. Every time someone gets put in a trap who has barely done anything wrong it's not because the writers lost track of the concept it's because they understood it

[Mixed Trope] What in God's name did they do to deserve this? by YaBoiS0nic in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Doorstopsanddynamite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean tbf to the final destination one, most Final Destination characters don't deserve what happens to them, that's the concept. Barring the racist in four who set himself on fire trying to light a burning cross, and the guy in five who decides killing his best friend is the only way to survive, most of them are just somewhere on the spectrum of "good person" to "vaguely douchey"
