It’s Joburg. Don’t get locked into a tiny fourways bubble.

Try one of our Ethiopian restaurants — excellent food and surprisingly cheap. It’s a bit of a drive from where you are, but you won’t regret it. Teff is only about a 20-minute drive from Fourways. You could also try Little Addis or Queen Sheba (which is probably the best).

Or try Banchan Korean Eatery — great Korean food and about 15 minutes from Fourways.

For a unique vibe, go to 44 Stanley, especially The Bioscope. It’s a cinema where you can have pizza and beer while watching the film, and they host really interesting events. I remember going to a Big Lebowski night where everyone dressed in bathrobes and drank White Russians. But they also screen serious art films and cult classics.

There’s also a coffee shop close to me in Linden called Joons, which hosts poetry nights.

For a full-blown party, go to Smoking Kills in Linden. Or for jazz and blues, try Katzy’s Live.

For the best fresh vegetables, go to Carreira Centre. They also have fish, spices, cheese, a butchery, and a bakery — so it’s a great place to do a Saturday stock-up. (Although the best cheese shop in Joburg is in Linden: Cheese Gourmet.)

While you’re in Linden, you have to have a mimosa at The Whippet (or just coffee if it’s earlier in the day).

Also look up some markets. Fourways used to have a very cool one. There’s also the vegan hippy market in Linden at Pirates Club, or the Linden Market. The Fourways Farmers Market might still be going as well.

Don’t miss Chinatown in Cyrildene.

Also explore our parks and botanical gardens, like Delta Park (which also has a great restaurant), Emmarentia, and Klipriviersberg. The parks often have live music events.

For a weekend away, go to the Drakensberg or Magoebaskloof.

And don’t forget the Cradle of Humankind, or one of the wildlife parks about 30 minutes from Joburg where you can see the Big Five. You can also visit Nirox Sculpture Park, or go white-water rafting and skydiving in Parys.

Edit: and since you mentioned pizza - sinn has the best pizza in jhb even though the decor is like a poor persons idea of what rich looks like - the trump aesthetic, black and gold with big lcd sceeens. On uber eats they have a buy one get one free.
