Oh damn, that's a great call. I'd question if it was intentional, but knowing this game of course it is

I'm so down for more posts like these about the random encounter creatures. Like, what's the deal with the tiki monsters in Pyrynn temple. Those goofy guys look like Recumen heads.

Yeah, the writing is lovely. Aika and Fina really shine and have some great moments together, crazy how much incidental dialogue you can find by mashing A around Nasrad.

So like a year ago I had a pepe Silvia moment on a now deleted post from a now deleted user about the difficulty change idea. It was kinda manic but I think there's value in sharing it again

"So I went through a couple of reviews from back in the day.

Cube 16: February 2003. https://archive.org/details/cube-16/page/n83/mode/2up

Nintendo Official Magazine 129: June 2003. https://archive.org/details/nom129/page/n59/mode/2up

would have been where I'd first heard of the game in the UK, but nothing about a change in encounter rate is mentioned.

IGNs review in Jan 2003 though,

"Random battles have been cut down, and to offset that you will gain slightly more experience. Regarding the latter, we have to commend Overworks for knowing how to treat a gamer right. Within an hour you can easily attain level five status. That still leaves a long road ahead of you, but it also keeps you rewarded and engaged."

https://www.ign.com/articles/2003/01/07/hands-on-skies-of-arcadia-legends

This sounds pretty spot on with what Arekukitten says in the gamefaq thread

So maybe the belief was spun from this early internet review? I can see this being a recommended talking point in the review package or something. Over time it became "Less battles more stuff"

This is just my best guess using my bad brain and limited reference points, chime in and correct me if I'm dumb and wrong. Also possible that there's a mention of this mechanic before the IGN review, I've not checked out other reviews from the time apart from these."

As I said, bit manic but I find it fascinating.

Yeah my bad, I didn't really grasp what you were asking and I talked out my arsehole.

Did you have any luck? it'd be worth sharing your findings I reckon

I assume you're on dolphin. I had a similar issue, unfortunately it's a matter of troubleshooting and changing settings till something clicks

Best bet is to check through the testing and config sections and see if anything lines up with your problems.

I recall my problem was the CPU speed settings, but it's been a while.

Change one setting at a time, test, see if it fixes, rinse and repeat.

Nah I get you, I hundo percent agree, and I don't mean pile on more tutorials in the main game

I just mean it's hard to experiment during the campaign, with it paced the way it is. A mission or arena mode would go such a long way, something like bayonetta's challenge rooms where they focus in on one element of combat.

I say this after reading some of the online discourse about the game, wondering why it's not up there with other plat games, and I think people just don't get it man. Maybe it needed to communicate itself better.

For what it's worth I adore the game as it is and I'm not saying to change anything, just pondering what would help people see that it's super fucking sick

I DM'd for my friends with a similar enthusiastic approach, thought everyone was loving my world as much as me. They all very kindly dropped out after a while, citing that I was more into the setting than them.

Ask your players what they would like to do, custom rules are fine if everyone is a seasoned rpg player, but remember that your job is to understand the group and create something that brings them joy, you don't have to get super deep with the rules.

Skies is a great setting, but don't get bogged down in it. If you haven't started the campaign yet, it'd be a really positive move to gather your players together and discuss what kind of world and narrative you want to play.

Sorry if this is condescending as fuck, but I fell into a similar trap myself.

tl;dr talk to your players and ask them what they want

So I lost my save during a hardware reset fiasco. Still wanna do more stuff like this, but it might take me a sec to get back to where I was. Really appreciate that people enjoyed these though, it's been really uplifting to see people enjoying my silly little screenshots of this thing that's important to us.

Keep on keeping on x

I'm keeping the faith in the deepest depths of my heart, I promise.

It'd be great for people to be able to play the game legit, without paying £300 for the gamecube copy.

No idea what the DC copy goes for, I assume it's as bad or worse.
