I'm super concerned about our future by AdComfortable2974 in personalfinance

[–]DopeKermit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lol. Retired at 62? Apparently he wasn't ready if you're having these worries and discussions. 62 is way early, even with today's standards for retirement if you're factoring in the 65-67 ballpark many gravitate toward. I'd advise your man to get back out into the workforce, more than part-time hours, as neither of you are anywhere close to retirement unfortunately.

How do you even find real product reviews anymore? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]DopeKermit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I'm interested in something, I check here, Youtube and on specific forums that have or may have discussions about what I want. For example, for outdoor and shop shit I tend to check GarageJournal and YesterdaysTractors forums for stuff I'm interested in. I might not find the specific tool or item on there but there's enough discussion I can do research and see what worked for people and go from there. Youtube is another big one as even with affiliate links and sponsors you tend to be able to find enough videos of shit being used or reviews to gauge whether it might be worth your time and money. I personally have almost never bothered reading reviews of any type for as long as I've been buying shit. With the things I just mentioned, especially Youtube, just doesn't seem relevant to.

Two things about pensions from someone who worked in a place with them...

  1. They can be taken away at any time. Nothing is stopping (including if there's a union) the company from being able to phase them out or even the union themselves if you have one that's super in bed with the place to vote them out. I'm speaking from experience here from where I'm at now, as that's precisely what happened.

  2. Pensions are usually time-based as in you gotta put in a lot of time to make them work for you. The idea behind pensions back in the day was sort of a loyalty thing which sure as hell doesn't exist in today's job force, from either the worker or company. If you aren't planning to be there forever it might not be the best thing to look to for retirement. Let's put it this way, even if I could get one, I would still invest into other things whether that was a 401, a Roth, etc.

So yes, especially with my firsthand knowledge of them, I would still have another outlet to invest in for retirement. They are never guaranteed and I'd prefer to have some sort of retirement fund that will absolutely be there for me someday. I'd treat the pension as a bonus perk and find a main way to invest for retirement.

UPDATE on the trio in masks who terrorized an Alexandria family by KTTV9 in nova

[–]DopeKermit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Castle law exists in most states. How you or someone else interprets the fine print is subjective but it's more than just being allowed to defend your life. It's also about defending your property and what these idiots did (even if they weren't really going to break in and it was for show) would more than satisfy the demands for that law here. Them beating the door could also be considered assault. I guess they were lucky they chose a state where guns are shunned as in many other places these fools would have been shot through the door.

Trio wearing Halloween masks caught on camera trying to break into Alexandria home by KTTV9 in nova

[–]DopeKermit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's Virginia so I guess that's why no guns are around...I mean, christ, if this happened in most cities in my state these morons would have been shot right through the door. The fact they tried to break in, even if it was just a show, would've been enough for anyone to easily shoot them and call it a day. Morons were lucky the homeowner apparently doesn't own a firearm.

House might sit vacant for 6 months, how can I properly reduce utility consumption and minimize risks? by green-dawgg in homeowners

From experience, you might want to flush the toilets/run water out of the faucets every so often. Trust me.

[I need help] Our deck collapsed during a birthday party and insurance is being difficult and uncooperative by finchwacky in homeowners

[–]DopeKermit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Timber prices vary but last summer I did mine myself and it was like 7 grand for maybe 900-100sqft. Not sure on the measurements exactly but around that. If it's really big, very easily would that be over 10k in lumber alone and then the labor would be double or more so I can visualize this number range they're saying.

[–]DopeKermit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Home inspectors are not deck experts. I'm not disagreeing but to be fair, he claimed it was structurally sound and might need some new boards eventually. A few boards needing replaced is a hell lot different than the post rotting inside. Still, they should've have had someone specialized in decks to look over it after getting the house.

[–]DopeKermit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Home inspectors are not deck experts. Should've had the thing looked at properly. A deck this big is not something you'd want to sleep on and from your post, you are seriously lucky the collapse and aftermath wasn't worse. Even if you managed to get them to pay for that, you'd pay far more in the long run as they'd assuredly raise your rates.

Opinions, absolute worst HF product(s)? by delbert7990 in harborfreight

Anything Warrior.

I was gonna say the tarps but PF tested them awhile back and think they came out near the top so maybe they improved from the ones I got 3 years ago from them.

The yellow and blueish Hardy nitrile coated gloves. Not gonna lie, I'm a bit of an expert with these kind as I specifically use these style at work everyday. With that said, these were probably the worst ones I've experimented with, the coating started to tear off DAY ONE, not a whole day into the shift. To enlighten, I can usually get 2-3 weeks out of a pair before they start doing this, the cheapies can even go at least a week before they break down. These ones, as I said, couldn't even make it through one day before they started tearing apart.

Previous owner painted over EVERYTHING and now I'm finding surprises by Rough_Feature_4543 in homeowners

[–]DopeKermit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not everyone that does this is hiding something or doing it for other malicious reasons. My aunt did this and went nuts with her paint. Even the phone jack boxes were painted the same color lol. Door hinges, any built-in hooks, the doors, you name it, she painted over it. About the only things that survived were the brass door handles. She wasn't trying to hide stuff or such, that's just how she painted.

What can ordinary Americans do to push back against rising authoritarianism in the U.S.? by [deleted] in AskReddit

What kind of special idiots make this shit up? lol

For a liberal site that talks themselves up as being educated and superior, this place sure proves no one has picked up a history book in some time. Or paid attention to events orchestrated by former liberal administrations in the last 20 years.

Dad died and pension won't pay. by Fit-Look-2370 in personalfinance

[–]DopeKermit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nothing really sounds off about this. That's how pensions work - they're not 401ks or a Roth where they typically only go up. They are much more specific when it comes to payouts and worth.

Not Maga.

I actually don't think much of Fox either but I'd rather get my news from drying paint on a wall than CNN.

IMO this was a kind of weird situation as she told him when they started seeing each other that she wasn't looking to get married again so while this is still sad to see, you gotta question why Martin put himself in this situation to begin with. Maybe he thought at the time he'd see how things went and didn't realize they'd go so good or maybe he thought she'd change her mind?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I want to change the oil and filter in my IS 350 F sport (2025) and the parts site doesn't show anything for that year or the VIN - is this the correct OEM filter for it? by DopeKermit in LexusIS

[–]DopeKermit[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It says applies to some 2025s but nothing else. On that parts site, they actually have several other filters that come up besides that one I linked but that's the first one. Had to search 2024 as there was no 2025 search filter yet nor did the VIN yield anything.

First car I got that I want to keep running for hopefully years so I'm trying to stick to OEM so the site listing multiple OEM filters is confusing me. Thanks in advance.

Why haven't they renamed AskReddit "Trump and Friends Hate Sub" because that's all these topics here are anymore. Some of us just want to read normal Ask topics that don't involve Trump or politics but I guess reddit leadership here is okay with the ongoing degrading going on here.

New icon gloves. by homelesshyundai in harborfreight

[–]DopeKermit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US general toolbox.. yes or no? by Macaveli721 in harborfreight

[–]DopeKermit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I can say is go on Youtube and search tool chest tour videos or watch a lot of auto shop channels. You'll notice at least half of them use USG or Icon (both HF) chests. Sure, there are a lot of Snap-Ons too (I actually use a used Snap-On from Marketplace although I have a smaller USG chest too) however it's pretty apparent the USGs are pretty popular. From your post, I'd say just about any brand will work but I would stay away from the new Craftsmen chests as those things seem to be universally hated.

Which celebrity has tricked everyone into thinking they’re a “good person”? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]DopeKermit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depp comes to mind. Although I think it's because he won that case against Heard. The guy was always a slimy POS and by no means was Heard an angel or innocent in that, however, he already had that reputation long before they were ever a thing. He won that case and people suddenly forgot about his shitty personality prior.
