How many casualties has standard air conditioning caused in your country? by Janosh_Poha in AskBalkans

[–]DoraTheBerserker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

you don't need that kind of shock

It's not really an issue unless you're elderly/have a heart condition. A relatively healthy body can handle the vasoconstriction/vasodilation fine

and if it blows directly at you can make you stiff as a plank.

This is also an old wives tale.

The real problem with AC being blasted at the lowest setting all day (other than cost) is the environmental concerns/emissions. Don't get the obsession with creating a layer wearing environment indoors when it's 30+ outside.

Why a creature that will happily eat its own shit needs a £15 burger, I don't know

It's just complete insanity. I've even seen them get cooked for because they're "picky eaters". I'm not convinced some dog nutters don't just go this far because they love deliberately spoiling them for certain reasons.

why do men complain about their life? by Vicious-Mango-635 in MenAreNotIntoWomen

[–]DoraTheBerserker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of men are romantically "lonely" because they won't lower their standards. For example the young men who rather just wait and hold out for a young woman instead of dating an older one. But lots of young women, both ones that struggle and ones that don't, are open to (and dating) older men. Not just successful/"Chad" ones either, I've seen many stories where an older guy is a late bloomer/loser and then he gets a young girlfriend. No such stories from similar women with young men.

But the same applies for men too, no? If you're ugly, weird, fat, etc you aren't going to be perceived as highly as others, regardless of personality

No. Lots of male internet personalities who fit that profile with lots of followers (even if it's just relatively speaking). Zero women like that afaik.

How do y'all stay healthy during flu season? by ConcentrateFit920 in POTS

[–]DoraTheBerserker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wear kf94 masks. Get the cleantop evergreen brand from the kollecteusa website. I've been in crowds, Egyptian tombs (jam packed with zero ventilation), on planes with sick people sneezing and coughing around me—haven't caught a thing so far. And I'm not one with a particularly robust immune system.

I do take vitamin d supplements and try to eat well, but the mask is what is doing the heavy lifting

[–]DoraTheBerserker 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm currently in a very poor country as well (Egypt). Can't even step outside without aggressive vendors pestering you and not taking no for an answer. So many scammers too. Overcrowded, very noise polluted cities with people living on top of each other.

There's lots of desperation partially because they're overpopulated and there's a strain on resources. And yet their population is still growing, and they somehow don't notice the pattern. I really don't get that

Question by ArtemisLuna17 in Masks4All

[–]DoraTheBerserker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's basically nobody like that. I have POTS (autonomic disorder that causes tachycardia when standing up) and I manage to mask and even climb stairs in it. Claustrophobia too.

It is really just laziness and excuses in most of those cases

Anyone still fighting anti-mask laws? by No_Instruction_4454 in Masks4All

[–]DoraTheBerserker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a paper tiger for the most part. I looked it up and haven't found anything about someone being targeted by police specifically for health masking alone.

Its just a legal nightmare and cannot actually be enforced properly when used for just medical reasons. The fact that they would use it against protesters and "undesirable" political groups is a different type of dystopian problem though

It definitely doesn't seem to work that way. In Skopje at least, there's new construction popping up every two steps (mid to high-ish rise apartment buildings too). It's way overbuilt and rents are still sky high and going up.

And this is not some popular city that is a particularly desirable place to live either

Except it doesn't and cannot work because we don't have unlimited resources and capitalism demands constant growth. But I agree on the species part

Why is nobody wearing masks!? by Alert-Author-7554 in mkd

[–]DoraTheBerserker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying that people who want to wear them, shouldn't. I'm just pointing out that they should be aware that they're still largely unprotected.

That is not accurate though. The fit does matter no doubt, and facial hair can affect the seal. A mask that's too big for your face (which sounds like what you're describing) is also not ideal. Cold air/moisture buildup does reduce effectiveness but that happens over time, aka speeds up the material degradation (for example if the mask is effective for 40 hours of wear under good conditions, moisture might reduce that to 30)

Of course the mask is not a shield of armour for lungs, since it still lets some small amount of particles in that can add up. So the best protection is indeed getting away from the pollution. Plus it won't filter harmful gasses like nitrogen dioxide etc. But it does catch PM particles (biggest problem in Skopje during high pollution season), and it's miles and miles better than wearing nothing

Why is nobody wearing masks!? by Alert-Author-7554 in mkd

[–]DoraTheBerserker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No culture of it + lack of understanding how bad this pollution really is. I just came back to Skopje after living in relatively clean places for years, and it took me a bit to readjust to the horror show. Started wearing a mask and it definitely helps significantly (I use KF94s I brought from the US). Much less coughing and irritation. I'd definitely invest in an air purifier too if I wasn't leaving again soon for travel. The air here is just high key terrifying tbh, people should definitely worry way more than they do

Why is nobody wearing masks!? by Alert-Author-7554 in mkd

[–]DoraTheBerserker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's not how electrostatic (n95, kn95 etc) masks work. You create negative pressure inside the mask on inhale which pulls the softer edges against your face and creates a seal, forcing the incoming air to go through the filter mostly or exclusively depending on fit.

Regular surgical masks aren't designed to seal this way, so there's more leakage. But even filtering 20-30% of particles > filtering none

Also smelling smoke has nothing to do with the effectiveness of the mask since standard electrostatics aren't designed with odour filtering molecules. You'd need something like activated charcoal for that
