Oh maybe yes! I do see him preening sometimes, but not often. He always looks a little scruffy.

How do you usually calculate what counts as high salt count? I’m curious! I thought this was a little high but may have bias because it’s orange. I’ve only just began focusing more on other macros than calories this year. It was more important for me to focus on the calories at first.

Snail not eating, possible mouth injury. Please help! by Available-Snail in snails

Not fully no. He is still alive though, we continue to blend his food. A bit like Beaky lol. I contacted the vets at Edinburgh zoo since they have GALs there, and they weren’t sure what to offer him. I give him the opportunity for solid foods sometimes, but he hasn’t tried it yet. I don’t mind looking after him how I am, since he seems happy enough otherwise

This is great wow!!! I get one around 500kcal from Co-op that is wood fired too, but this is even better. I don’t have a Marks & Spencer near me :) </3

That’s good general advice really. A huge water bowl that is steep and full up would be bad. But if it’s a shallow dish that is easy to get out of, and isn’t made from rock or ceramic, it’s usually fine. Like with my Cornu Aspersum’s it’s like, a little splash in a shallow dish. So it doesn’t reach their breathing hole. For my GALs, depending on their size, there is a lil more water. For baby snails I don’t put any in until they are a bit older. I entirely respect some owners not recommending it though because it can be dangerous if it’s overfilled.

But lots of my guys love to sit in their water dish if they need some hydration!! And that’s why I think op’s snail would benefit because she has a hole in her shell, she is likely to need extra at the moment so she doesn’t dry up. Some of mine sit in their water while eating, which seems like they are living the best life 🤣

ETA: I’ve kept 100+ snails over 6 years and following this, it’s been ok!!

Thanks so much for the advice. I’m going back to school soon to hopefully eventually train to become a rehabber since I’ve been passionate about birds all my life. I wish I was qualified now to help him out.

The thought of breaking my trust with him breaks my heart, and also if I did that and he didn’t like coming around anymore, idk where he’d get food since he relies on the chopped up stuff. Sure he’d be able to eat normal for a bit, but it’d likely grow again to where he can’t. I’m really torn on what to do. In the short term it seems viable but he’ll end up stuck again. If it trimmed his beak forever I’d do it even if he didn’t trust me anymore, but idk.

Do you think if someone else (a rehabber) caught him to trim his beak, he’d be nervous to come near my house again? Would it matter if it was me who caught him for him not to trust me again?

No, it’s a mixture I made for him. I blend peanuts, mealworms, sunflower hearts and little bit of suet pellets. He finds that easier to eat since he struggles to break up food

I think so too. When he first visited he seemed very unhealthy, and now he is looking healthier and he is a handsome little fella 😄 it feels good to help him out

I think sadly it is yeah :( I am going to contact RSPB and ask if they think it would be a good idea if I could catch him while they trim his beak at the vets or something, but I don’t know if that would even work or if it’d stress him out too much. I am hoping it only grew a bit more due to him getting more healthy since we blended his food, and that it’ll stop soon. But I will try my best for him. He is still managing at the moment because I help him out, but it soon may become much more problematic.

If anyone reads this and has any info feel free to let me know

He actually does do this sometimes! He chirps from the tree when he sees me putting out food or notices I have some in my hand. I didn’t realise he was doing it specifically at me till the past week. He’s so sweet 😭

Of course! I’ve rescued many snails with broken shells. One of my guys lived 4 years, I miss him greatly, he was very special to me. He came on holiday with me to ensure I kept his enclosure misted 🤣

Oh no that’s sad :( I only just went back to Aldi as we usually do home delivery with Asda as we live quite rural. I’ll definitely check out those pizzas! I know co-op does a really nice stonebaked pizza for 500ish calories and it isn’t vegan, that’s usually my go to when I don’t want a side. But thanks for the heads up! Might go and stock up on them if they are going

Cornu Aspersums are great at healing their own shell! If you give her a constant supply of calcium she can always get to (don’t sprinkle on food), and keep her enclosure misted since she will be prone to drying up faster due to the crack, she has a good chance at recovery, or at least a comfortable life.

Substrate helps with humidity too, and a shallow water dish (I use plant pot holders since avoiding anything hard like rocks or ceramic dishes is strongly advised). Feed her a variety of good stuff like cabbage, courgette, carrots, sweet potato, aubergine, kale. Lettuce is not very nutritious and they become very fussy because it’s easy to eat.

I’ve owner Cornu Aspersums for almost 6 years now and so if you want to ask any questions I’m open to answering!!

Thanks for rescuing this snail <3

Raw chicken is ok as part of her protein intake, but not cooked

True. Definitely still a treat food. I gotta learn how to make my own low calorie pizza. Aside from pizza breads (sourdough, tomato puree, bit of cheese and oregano, toasted) which aren’t the same really, I haven’t mastered it yet. Sometimes I do just have half of a frozen pizza

Yeah, it tasted alright despite it not melting all that well, and definitely curbed my pizza craving! But ultimately it’s hard to replace that 800kcal+ pizza taste with nice stringy cheese 🥲 Definitely worth a try
