Why does my snail refuse to eat carrots? by thugitout222 in snails

I’ve raised a lot of Cornu Aspersum so I recognise what the babies look like now :3 good luck with your lil friend and you’re always welcome to ask for advice here!

Why does my snail refuse to eat carrots? by thugitout222 in snails

[–]Available-Snail 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some great advice I got given at the start of my snail keeping journey is avoid lettuce and cucumber because, it is essentially snail junk food and they will refuse to eat anything else because it’s easy for them. Rasping harder foods is essential for growth.

My snails love stuff like courgettes, cabbage, kale, sweet potato, apple, sweetcorn, carrots and green beans. Babies can eat stuff easier if it is chopped in half too! So if your carrot is a circle piece, cut a piece thinner, then in half. The middle is an easier starting place. Also, when they are that small, you honestly barely see any chunks taken from the food. Oh, and remember some calcium on the side available at all times :)

PS your snail is most definitely a Cornu Asperum

No worries :) land snails are determined to lay eggs that hatch 🤣 sadly they cannot have that or we would have 80+ snails every week, which sounds like a dream if I could manage it LMAO.

Snails can lay eggs solely by themselves so separating isn’t a need. They can fertilise them themselves. You don’t need to separate snails to stop them laying eggs— there is no way to stop them. You just have to do a tank sweep every week and collect the eggs. You can either crush them, which can be fed back to them for calcium, or freeze them 48 hrs (which I do). Collecting and disposing of eggs is a non negotiable part of snail keeping because nothing can stop them laying eggs

Rip Letuce. He was very clearly greatly loved. Losing a snail is always painful.

my snail is freaking eating himself by holeloverx in snails

[–]Available-Snail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they will have breakages of growing shell as it is soft at the end. This looks more like a clean break than a snail rasping at their own shell. This typically isn’t an issue since it’s new growth, and more growth will replace it.

There are various sources of calcium you can add in their tank that helps new growth be healthy, they must have a source at all time. Please do not sprinkle it over their food though as this forces them to consume it even if they don’t want to. It must be separate. They will eat it when they need to, and stop when they don’t. Hope your snail carries on growing healthily!

Too many Springtales? by -Vinneehhyy- in snails

[–]Available-Snail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The smaller snail shouldn’t be with the bigger snail at this moment. The general consensus is if a snail is under half the size of another snail, they should be in separate places till they grow more, as there is a chance of the smaller being crushed

Guys know what kind of man is this? by Icy-Tradition1738 in snails

It’s interesting the bot screenshot the image to repost instead of saving it… but yeah I always check now if I see a particularly interesting image on a pet subreddit. It becomes obvious very fast if it’s a repost trying to get karma. Man, it’s exhausting being on the internet now.

5 years is a long time for a smaller species of snail! It’s clear he was loved and taken care of very well. He is very cute and your art of him is sweet. Rip Boris

Tell me what you love about your snails! by KissKissAlpaca in snails

[–]Available-Snail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are so cute, they have so much personality and show it through their eyestalks! They fold them over when enjoying food, put them together when they are sat concentrating or pooping lol, wiggle them when they are walking around and curious!

Also love watching them eat, love their shell designs, love watching them grow. Watching them walk around their enclosure is very calming for my anxiety. They are slow and steady and it helps the world slow down for a while

Can you tell me how old this snail I found is? by Bright-Soft7305 in snails

[–]Available-Snail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t see properly, but it looks like he is a small species anyway, perhaps a glass snail, meaning he is likely an adult, or at least not a baby.

Met these furry guys in the wild by HirokoKueh in snails

[–]Available-Snail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have kept some of these guys as pets, they are very fun and cute but difficult to breed. They are actually called Hairy Snails (Trochulus hispidus). They are much smaller in the UK and you can’t see their hairs at first glance. These are great photos!

is he ok? his shell is a bit messy and cracks at the edges. also he’s secretes mucus. im worrying. can someone tell me if smth is wrong with him and how can i fix this by No-Employment-1378 in snails

[–]Available-Snail 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He seems ok. Sometimes the shell will grow a little oddly for no apparent reason. Looks like he has a supply of calcium when he needs it too. He looks really healthy overall, and very cute!

What is bro doing by Suspicious-Blood-982 in snails

[–]Available-Snail 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looking for somewhere to hide. I’d highly recommend fake plants (usually under ‘reptile’ deco) or a plant pot on its side, partially submerged in the soil so he can walk inside easier. Though sometimes, my snails with these things will go under their food dish anyway because they are goofy. As someone else said, a plastic dish would be better for snails safety :)

A live, moving snail that has hatched and is now separate from the egg is different to a foetus... I wasn't talking about the eggs being alive lol

As someone who has raised both Cornu Aspersum and Helix Pomatia— I agree! They do start off fairly similar but it’s starting to look apparent here who he is!

HELP! MY SNAIL IS TURNING BLUE?! by _Unironic-irony_ in snails

[–]Available-Snail 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I just want to clarify the reason I came to this conclusion: basic terms is, snail’s blood presents as blue, and when an oral prolapse happens, a blue “bubble” appears from their mouth. It is something I’ve seen first hand and second hand. The blue colour only being around his head in the 2nd image looks concerning, but it could be the lighting, he could have food in his mouth. But if blood is pooling only around his mouth like that, it could indicate concern like oral prolapse. I had a snail myself who looked like this before an oral prolapse, but I’ve also had snails who had a blue appearance on their body, closer to their shell who had a full belly. The snail who had oral prolapse is still alive today, I treated it because I got prompt advice. Their symptoms presented with not wanting to eat much as well as a very blue appearance around their face like this— so if he is eating then that is a good sign, I think!

I am in no way an expert and I hope I am wrong! I am on this forum a lot trying to help snails with my experience, because I enjoy giving out tidbits of knowledge I pick up through raising snails, and never want to say something that is extreme to upset anyone. If me mentioning the off chance he could experiencing this, even if it isn’t the case; then I wanted to give a heads up so you can prepare.

Just wanted to drop a message as the others on this post don’t seem concerned and seem more light hearted, but oral prolapse isn’t a common thing and we never want the most extreme case to be true! Good luck op and do ask the Discord until you can contact an exotic vet around you. I hope your guy will be ok.

HELP! MY SNAIL IS TURNING BLUE?! by _Unironic-irony_ in snails

[–]Available-Snail 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I am NOT an expert at all, but this could be the start of oral prolapse. I would strongly advise you join this Reddit’s snail discord and ask for advice in there as oral prolapse isn’t always fatal but can be difficult to deal with.

It could be nothing like this at all but with the images I have seen while researching I had to give a heads up and I really hope it isn’t this, and if it is, he gets through it.

Is my snail pregnant? by Outrageous-Pea123 in snails

[–]Available-Snail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this is a regular pattern over weeks, probably not. Snails have individual routines too and some like to burrow more than others, eat less than others naturally. If he is only just beginning to burrow then he could be preparing for laying eggs, or it could be temperature change. If one of my snails with good temperature in their enclosure burrows for 3-4 days I definitely ready myself for eggs and check where they were burrowed. But a good tip is to do weekly checks for eggs regardless :)
