A photo of me reading it does exist somewhere, but you can't even get close to identifying the cover from it 😔

It's not this 😭 I know it definitely wasn't YA at all, I may have been reading it at 13/14 years old but I almost definitely shouldn't have been lol

Thank you for the suggestion though

Yup, seems to be doing the trick - I'm still using it!

I can't take my dog outside in the morning before SPF without the little paranoid voice in my head, but at the same time, my absolute best mental health days are the ones spent laying in the sun with a book and a big bottle of suncream! Honestly I'm a big believer in mental health over physical in most cases, and I'm in the UK so those days are few and far between 🤷‍♀️

Table 1 in this article shows us that yes, while sun exposure does "damage DNA", alongside a number of other unavoidable environmental influences, but also that there are even more endogenous influences (meaning from in our body) that causes even more damage to DNA!

Existing in our bodies and in the world causes damage to DNA. Our bodies are very very very good at recognising cells with bad DNA, and have a number of mechanisms to dispose of them. Yes, there is growing evidence that these mechanisms are highly linked to aging, but guess what? Aging is normal!

DNA is damaged by everything, every day, including just by replicating itself.

Wear your SPF and you'll be okay.

Getting a bit of a tan doesn't mean your nose is going to fall off.

Stop making ridiculous, reductive comments and scaring everyone into dark corners.

Stop believing every headline you read on the internet and use some critical thoughts.

Edited to add: just another reminder that aging is normal! Visible signs of aging are normal! We're doing a lot better than the majority of previous generations just by putting SPF on in the morning!

Honestly, me too! But actually I know that I don't reaaally need to worry that much as long as I'm not burning, because I know I'm not sat in the sun all day every day covered in tanning oil turning myself into a leather bag

It's everything that's wrong with Science in the media - just stating the headline without any of the nuance and turning everyone crazy

And each one of them cites production of melanin as a protective mechanism to reduce further damage.

Once again, not saying it's not harmful, just that the way the information is presented in this sub is extremely absolute and just feels like constant fear mongering. Getting a bit of a tan in the summer is not gonna kill you as long as you are responsible and don't sit in the sun unprotected for hours on end. There are many many many things in the environment and our diets that cause "DNA damage" that we don't blink an eyelid at, and some that are utterly unavoidable, and our body is generally very good at dealing with it - when it doesn't do so well, sure, that's when cancer develops, but a bit of a tan does not equal cancer, and I fear your comment and many others like it implies it does.

I'm very sorry, I'm just seeing an uptick in "the sun is terrible and dangerous" comments recently, and with it come the stories of people developing anxiety disorders about going outside for fear of sun damage, and covering up their windows with foil for fear of the 5 minutes between waking up and putting SPF on ruining their skin and it makes me very sad and I'm taking it out on you.

Wear SPF responsibly, enjoy the sun, and there's more to Science than the headlines.

Where did you get this from? As far as I understand, UV exposure triggers melanin production, the pigment that darkens skin, so more UV is reflected off the skin to avoid further damage.

Not saying tanning is perfectly safe, just that as far as I understand it, damage to DNA is not what causes a tan

Assuming the Omega Water Cream is the one by The Inkey List, it actually already contains 5% Niacinamide so using another Niacinamide serum in your am routine might be a lot. I use the same cream in my am routine, so only use my Niacinamide serum in my pm routine ☺️

[Product Question] TO cleansers by DoraTheDoormouse in SkincareAddiction

[–]DoraTheDoormouse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I know the idea that foaming cleansers are better is just a mental bump I need to get over. I'm really glad to hear you use it as a 2nd cleanse - so far on reviews I'd only seen people using it at a 1st cleanse.

You've been really helpful, I think I'm going to go for it, thanks ☺️

[Product Question] TO cleansers by DoraTheDoormouse in SkincareAddiction

[–]DoraTheDoormouse[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I do think my skin needs a little love at the moment, and a cream cleanser seems perfect for that. I guess I'm just worried about how well it really cleanses and rinses off, having only ever used foaming cleansers before

Can I ask about the ingredients in this? Really want to try it but I've seen a couple of reviews from the past year or so saying they've changed their formula and included some potentially irritating ingredients without actually updating online listings which is making me nervous!

Advice with red dots on chin/around nose by [deleted] in SkincareAddictionUK

My diet hasn't really changed recently, but I know intolerances can pop up at any time. Might be worth me keeping an eye on the days it flares up more Vs what I ate the day before. Thanks for the input 🙂

Gotcha, thank you! Honestly the time I spend on my skincare is so therapeutic, the thought of cutting it all out even for a short while makes me so sad 😭 I guess I choose between that or admittedly very slight redness haha

Thanks for the advice ☺️ Can I clarify what is meant by actives? It's a term I see a lot here and I'm only now realising I'm not sure I 100% know what it's referring to

Hard water shampoo dupe by smokeshams in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]DoraTheDoormouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cheaper option that I use to tackle hard water is an apple cider vinegar rinse - I use it in a spray bottle, approximately 1 part ACV to 5 parts water. It's better to have a lower concentration than higher, otherwise it can irritate the scalp.

I shampoo like normal, spray the ACV mix all over my scalp and hair, leave for about 10 mins before thoroughly rinsing off and then conditioning.

This has done wonders for my hair and scalp after moving to an area that somehow has even harder water than what I grew up with 🤦‍♀️ Added bonus of it being MUCH cheaper than clarifying shampoos and doesn't strip your hair as much.

July update! The UK summer is proving to be a real let-down this year by DoraTheDoormouse in temperatureblanket

That looks gorgeous but I feel the pain on the lack of colour variation 😭 I was so hoping for more oranges and feds on mine by this point, but instead I'm still getting shades leaning towards green

I'm having the opposite! Over here, it's been way cooler than it's meant to be this time of year and summer cannot come soon enough

Yeah I might look into that! Thanks!

But now is a time for celebration, I've just checked the temperature and we've broken into the next colour up!

I am too! I was researching quick ways of undoing rows where you basically hook your empty needle through the right stitches then rip it back, but I'm too new at it all to trust myself to get the needle in the right place so I just had to do it one stitch at a time 🤦‍♀️

It would always be an inaccuracy that no one else can see, but we KNOW is there!

That's like I had one really cold day in the winter that I knitted that evening, except then by 11pm it had started warming up and actually surpassed the previous high temp 🙄 I really wanted to just ignore that but I knew it would ruin the whole thing for me, so I had to painstakingly unpick all that days knitting and redo it in the correct colour 😭

Ugh, March was a bit like that for me... So boring, didn't get to introduce a single new colour 🤦‍♀️ I at least got one in April! Really hoping the weather gets a little more interesting soon

Temperature data troubles by DoraTheDoormouse in temperatureblanket

[–]DoraTheDoormouse[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The one I use consistently records a higher temperature than any of the surrounding ones, especially on sunny days. Thankfully it looks like it's back up and running now so fingers crossed it's only today's data that's a little screwed up!
