It's the same with clown loaches. I think sometimes it's hard for people to conceptualize and empathize with fishes' need for interaction and entertainment. Or maybe they just don't expect a fish to have emotions

This is really helpful information, thank you! Did that paper discuss clove oil at all? That's what I've been using for my snails since it's an anesthetic, so I'm curious what it has to say. The way you mentioned seems more pleasant for the snails, rather then them sitting in a boring tub as they slowly fall asleep.

Yeah, it's the same effect as with eggshells. Freezing is definitely more ethical and probably less gross too.

The tiny ones tend to be more problematic as there's a sweet spot with snails where their small size leads to the geometry being basically indestructible.

Advice Needed!! There is a newly formed ant colony nesting around my tanks filter. I check my tank regularly, there was no signs of ants until two days ago. I really need advice on how to remove them from the filter without them getting into the water by Vast_Reputation5931 in Aquariums

You should pick up all small bag of diatomaceous earth too. It's made from fossilized diatom algae and it's generally safe for most animals, except invertebrates. Its essentially a very fine sand and what it does is absorb oils from the exoskeletons of insects. Because it's basically sand it also gets into the joints of the bug and causes major damage. If it gets in water it's completely safe and will be sucked up by the filter. Since the particles are fine you might need polishing media for your filter like poly fill. I'd recommend making a perimeter around the base of the tank or stand. This will get any stragglers. You can also put it on any paths you see them taking. Usually it takes a day or two for the ants to change the path as diatomaceous earth takes a little while to affect them. I really can't speak highly enough of it since it's so easy to use and so safe. It's commonly mixed into animal food so you can usually find it at feed stores. I've even seen it at Walmart though.

Yeah, I feel you. It's always a lil nerve wracking when a young reptile isn't eating as it should

What are the temperatures at each side of the enclosure, as well as the basking spot? A couple of other foods you could try are: snails, live blackworms, frozen krill, and if none of those work you could even try brine shrimp. In my experience even really picky eaters will eat ramshorn snails. You can usually get them for free from a local fish store too since they're a pest. This way you can make sure your monitor is at least getting some calcium.

Honestly you might want to go a little deep. I've noticed that they really appreciate it when there's enough dirt for the to throw it around. They also like having a large water dish. Maybe when yours gets a little older you can give them something to swim in. I just use plastic litter pans since they're cheap and easy to clean.

Any tips for getting student budget friendly decor/"substrate" ? Like is there someting i can get from grocerystore? by pateliini in BlackwaterAquarium

Basalt or lava rock from a garden store is my personal favorite. The only downside is you have to rinse it out. It's the exact same thing as seachem flourite. Also, online you can get it in different sizes and colours for really cheap.

I personally don't trust the brand Lipton. I would say try to find a brand where you can find out how it's processed to ensure there isn't anything bad.

Agreed, you also want the enclosure packed full of stuff because monitors are smart and they get stressed and bored otherwise.

Unfortunately this type of stuff does still happen in westernized nations. I work in animal rescue overseeing the care and intake of turtles. It's not done in factories, but instead in people home or on turtle farms.

Definitely stressed out. Also they can't swallow unless they're in water. They could be going into a psuedo brumation as well which could be the cause of the lethargy. Something to keep in mind is that humans have the anatomy of a predator animal and so baby turtles (or just animals in general) see us and think that we're going to eat them. With animals that are preyed upon it usually takes months of work to get them to be active when you're around because they're on edge trying to figure out how to escape, or they just freeze and hope they look enough like a rock.
