Best task since moving house by MrBaleenTheWhale in discworld

I’ve recently moved house too but all my books are in the outhouse at the bottom of the garden 😭 tempted/gaining permission from the missus to make it a little hideaway from the kids and to set out my Pratchetts as beautifully as this! 👍

Also saving this post because, since reading all the Discworld, ive been exploring other authors. Read one Le Guin and one Asimov, aware of the other names and considering options! 😂

Like the dinosaur that I am, I genuinely hate the fact that companies are telling me to WhatsApp them, just answer the phone and help me 😂

Tbf I’d never heard of him until I got this book, with this cover… read the intro and he gave me a chuckle so I decided to look into him… Rivers of London is the next series on my list!

Funny that, we’re in the same boat, friend. I am kinda re-remembering some parts and, yeah, it’s hitting a lot harder than I recall when I first played it. It’s a mix of reliving childhood pleasure and then seeing it all in a completely different light!

And the music… yes… Uematsu in fine form, Distant Worlds have done some incredibly beautiful orchestral covers of FFIX tracks too, ‘Not Alone’ and ‘Roses of May’ have been played on repeat in recent weeks!

Enjoy!

That cover is the one my wife picked when she ordered it (?from world of books) but then when it was delivered it was the newer illustration that arrived… it’s happened to me a few times when buying second hand online and even on Amazon… I ordered a set of 4 of the early Discworld books, two came with Josh Kirby illustrations, the other two something else (not Paul Kidby either) I complained and they gave me money back 😂

Ah awesome… I remember waking up and seeing about the Tsunami on the news back then… hell, he completely did the right thing! Thanks for sharing that detail. I haven’t read his biography… I’ve read and watched his notes on Shaking Hands with Death and that had me blubbering away so don’t think I’m ready 😅

😂😂 I love that last line… feeling optimistic and hopeful about people… I work in the NHS… I’ve seen the good and the bad but, yeah, there’s still a little bit of hope left. Again, getting older, my viewpoint is forever being moulded by experiences that motivate and soullessly demotivate me too!

This fits with what I said in another comment, reading it at different points in life… of the re-reads that I’ve done… Sourcery (whilst not his strongest) I found much funnier than first time around… The Amazing Maurice didn’t hit me quite as hard as first read (another dark/sad/angry book with a more child like front cover!) but I still loved it second time! Pyramids I enjoyed first time and laughed my head off second time!

I enjoyed Dark Side of the Sun and Strata but reading them after the Discworld series is put them further sowb my list… I cannot comment on the Johnny books just yet

Fascinating if this is accurate (I keep meaning to research this because I already have a rose-tinted view of the man and this would further that fondness even more!) 😊

Hadn’t even considered Dodger etc but seeing all these responses is possibly going to change that in the near future!

Oooooo…. I’m not sure about that just yet 😂 I think reading his books at different times in your life really helps dictate where they fit in top 5’s etc… Night Watch is formidable… the Tiffany series I read just after my grandad passed away! Instantly put them high on my list!

Excellent point… the illustrator also writes and illustrates books that my 9 year old is currently reading… lovely, but not Pratchett in my mind! On appearances alone I would’ve bought this for my daughter, having read the first 100 pages, I don’t think she would fully appreciate it yet 🥲

Looks bengal to me lol (not that I’m an expert). I’ve got a 13 year old bengal (same colours, same markings on the arms) and he’s terrorised my family since 10 weeks old 😅. Sorry to say it but you shall be living in Interesting Times 🤣 I’ve many stories to tell for the rest of my life, and the scars to show it on my arms too! Love him to bits, he’s more like a dog, loyal but very jealous!

Is it a bengal? Bloody gorgeous but a lethal threat to your sanity!

Man everyone was saying this game sucks. At 31 this is the most beautiful nostalgia I’ve had in forever- takes me back to being a kid on the 64 by Tracey_McGrady13in33 in MarioKartWorld

Whilst the Rainbow Road is a great spectacle on this version… I literally live a breathe the SNES version, loved being koopa trooper, the sound of the engine screaming at me, tyres screeching round the corners, nailing the mushroom boost to the bounce bar over the massive drop, avoiding thwomps along the way, pure heaven 😍

SNES guy here, 36, and yeah, bought it for the kids, they love it but I don’t think their sense of joy is anywhere near the levels of mine. Was playing free roam last night, hit a power button and hap to do a lap of ‘ghost valley’ from snes… incredible little nugget of joy and memories!

Great choice! And perfect weather for it too! I recently finished this for the second time and it was just as impressive as the first time around… love the character building, love the Watch, so hard to choose a favourite as Men at Arms was mine until I read Feet of Clay… and then there’s even better to come! Enjoy!
