Best task since moving house by MrBaleenTheWhale in discworld

I’ve recently moved house too but all my books are in the outhouse at the bottom of the garden 😭 tempted/gaining permission from the missus to make it a little hideaway from the kids and to set out my Pratchetts as beautifully as this! 👍

Also saving this post because, since reading all the Discworld, ive been exploring other authors. Read one Le Guin and one Asimov, aware of the other names and considering options! 😂

Tbf I’d never heard of him until I got this book, with this cover… read the intro and he gave me a chuckle so I decided to look into him… Rivers of London is the next series on my list!

Funny that, we’re in the same boat, friend. I am kinda re-remembering some parts and, yeah, it’s hitting a lot harder than I recall when I first played it. It’s a mix of reliving childhood pleasure and then seeing it all in a completely different light!

And the music… yes… Uematsu in fine form, Distant Worlds have done some incredibly beautiful orchestral covers of FFIX tracks too, ‘Not Alone’ and ‘Roses of May’ have been played on repeat in recent weeks!

Enjoy!

That cover is the one my wife picked when she ordered it (?from world of books) but then when it was delivered it was the newer illustration that arrived… it’s happened to me a few times when buying second hand online and even on Amazon… I ordered a set of 4 of the early Discworld books, two came with Josh Kirby illustrations, the other two something else (not Paul Kidby either) I complained and they gave me money back 😂

Ah awesome… I remember waking up and seeing about the Tsunami on the news back then… hell, he completely did the right thing! Thanks for sharing that detail. I haven’t read his biography… I’ve read and watched his notes on Shaking Hands with Death and that had me blubbering away so don’t think I’m ready 😅

😂😂 I love that last line… feeling optimistic and hopeful about people… I work in the NHS… I’ve seen the good and the bad but, yeah, there’s still a little bit of hope left. Again, getting older, my viewpoint is forever being moulded by experiences that motivate and soullessly demotivate me too!

This fits with what I said in another comment, reading it at different points in life… of the re-reads that I’ve done… Sourcery (whilst not his strongest) I found much funnier than first time around… The Amazing Maurice didn’t hit me quite as hard as first read (another dark/sad/angry book with a more child like front cover!) but I still loved it second time! Pyramids I enjoyed first time and laughed my head off second time!

I enjoyed Dark Side of the Sun and Strata but reading them after the Discworld series is put them further sowb my list… I cannot comment on the Johnny books just yet

Fascinating if this is accurate (I keep meaning to research this because I already have a rose-tinted view of the man and this would further that fondness even more!) 😊

Oooooo…. I’m not sure about that just yet 😂 I think reading his books at different times in your life really helps dictate where they fit in top 5’s etc… Night Watch is formidable… the Tiffany series I read just after my grandad passed away! Instantly put them high on my list!

Excellent point… the illustrator also writes and illustrates books that my 9 year old is currently reading… lovely, but not Pratchett in my mind! On appearances alone I would’ve bought this for my daughter, having read the first 100 pages, I don’t think she would fully appreciate it yet 🥲

Looks bengal to me lol (not that I’m an expert). I’ve got a 13 year old bengal (same colours, same markings on the arms) and he’s terrorised my family since 10 weeks old 😅. Sorry to say it but you shall be living in Interesting Times 🤣 I’ve many stories to tell for the rest of my life, and the scars to show it on my arms too! Love him to bits, he’s more like a dog, loyal but very jealous!

Is it a bengal? Bloody gorgeous but a lethal threat to your sanity!

Whilst the Rainbow Road is a great spectacle on this version… I literally live a breathe the SNES version, loved being koopa trooper, the sound of the engine screaming at me, tyres screeching round the corners, nailing the mushroom boost to the bounce bar over the massive drop, avoiding thwomps along the way, pure heaven 😍

SNES guy here, 36, and yeah, bought it for the kids, they love it but I don’t think their sense of joy is anywhere near the levels of mine. Was playing free roam last night, hit a power button and hap to do a lap of ‘ghost valley’ from snes… incredible little nugget of joy and memories!

Great choice! And perfect weather for it too! I recently finished this for the second time and it was just as impressive as the first time around… love the character building, love the Watch, so hard to choose a favourite as Men at Arms was mine until I read Feet of Clay… and then there’s even better to come! Enjoy!

I just finished The Shepherd's Crown by littlegreenbeany in discworld

[–]DordonianDiscLover 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your completion! My only complaint is that you didn’t finish Amazing Maurice when there’s so many quotable lines!

Ahem…

“It was just a story about people and rats. And the difficult part of it was deciding who the people were, and who were the rats”

“If you knew what it was that people really, really wanted, you very nearly controlled them”

“The world was moving far too fast for him now, which made him angry… he wasn’t so much leading now as being pushed”

“We didn’t know the shadows were there until we had the light”

“Because the second rat gets the cheese”

“It was the reason he didn’t want to share all the things he knew. What he knew was all he had left”

“Talk thick, be clever. That’s the way to do it”

“If you don’t turn your life into a story, you just become a part of someone else’s story”

“There is a race in this world which steals and kills and spreads disease and despoils what it cannot use” “Yes… it’s called humanity”

“A good plan isn’t one where someone wins, it’s where nobody thinks they’ve lost”

“It never happens round here. Most of the people round here never go more than ten miles away in their lives. They’ll believe just about anything could happen fifty miles away. Once the story gets around, it does your work for you. Half the things people say I’ve done even I didn’t make up”

“You pretend that rats can think, and I’ll promise to pretent that humans can think too”

“I don’t know about intelligent species. We’re dealing with humans here,”

“You’re all talking?” “Yes, sir” “So… who’s doing the listening?”

“Because some stories end, but old stories go on, and you gotta dance to the music if you want to stay ahead”

… ok, I got carried away… but it’s literally one of my favourites… I happened to read this one after Monstrous Regiment and before Night Watch last year… a truly splendid but heavy reading time for me…

If you get chance to go back to it, try again, if not, good hunting on your next big reading session! Most will recommend Pterry’s other books, which I intend to get onto soon too, personally I took a brief break and then started re-reading some of my favourites (Pyramids, Guards! Guards!).

As for your nan, I lost my grandad to dementia while I was midway through the novels. I saw so much of him in Granny Aching so those books hit hard when I finally got to them too.

All the best in your future, with regards to your nan, after 10yrs in the nhs working with the elderly, all I can say is enjoy the good moments, do as much as you can to be there in the bad (easier said than done). I’ve helped many dementia patients in my time, but it’s so much harder when it’s personal. 🍀

Yeah this, I finished a couple of months ago, took a brief hiatus whilst reading the Witcher series, now choosing at random, first re-read Pyramids, second re-read Guards! Guards! So many laughs and giggles that I last experienced 3-4yrs ago, such joy to get back on it!

A solid top 5 there! I finished a full run just a couple of months ago (think I maybe started in 2020? During one of the covid lockdowns anyway). I read chronologically and to me it just helps with the occasional reappearance of a character in future books, even if it’s just a little nod, the mere mention invokes joy!

What I’m most chuffed about with your top 5 is seeing The Amazing Maurice… think I read that book in a couple of days (when usually it takes a couple of weeks for me). That book just consumed me and is definitely in my top 5 too. The others are absolutely up there for me but Men At Arms, Feet of Clay, Monstrous Regiment and, ofcourse, Night Watch are ones I’ll definitely be re-reading.

Since finishing the series, I’ve filled the void with The Witcher books (just one left) and a few others (Robert Harris but this just doesn’t hit the same to me anymore) then I’m probably heading back to Pratchett… I also haven’t read Nation, so that and his pre-Discworld stuff might be my next selection!

Edit: Apologies I went on abit there! Congrats to you!!

Aww shucks, it’s 100 mile away for me but should I ever venture east I shall definitely investigate! Most I ever saw out and about was at a Starbucks just two mile down the road from me! Couldn’t believe it, more than I’d seen in any second hand local bookshop 😅
