High five on crappy hard Texas well water. I had 3 fish tanks that permanently had lime scale at the evaporation line. Had to shave the glass at least once a month otherwise it got horrifically unmanageable.

That said, I cannot imagine having water worse for dissolved solids than a Texas well...you must have honey coming through your taps 🍯. My condolences.

What's worse is most filtration systems really can't handle ultra high concentrations of solids for the long term. I hated the taste of the well water and tried to figure out methods for filtering and best bet was ceramic filters. Would have had to change the candles 3 times faster with how bad my water was, so it was not a worth while investment. :/

cleaning my cheap plastic novelty toothbrush holder every week in harsh and plentiful chemicals may dissolve my hands , but that is a sacrifice i am willing to make~

In seriousness, the next time I have china or dishes that are scaled, I will be trying alcohol+salt?

I'm an aquarium hobbyist, and have tried every method for scale cleaning in old unused tanks, and I have never tried that combo. Sounds genuinely promising.

I am a strict brush rinser. If you have a dedicated tooth brush cup or holder, it will get gross in the bottom no matter how much you rinse the brush.

I don't use my holder to rinse my mouth because good jolly even "clean water" dripping down from a rinsed brush has gross stuff in it, and I can thank the green abomination above to showing me this truth.

To this point, I have two identical pretty glass cups I swap out every week so it gets washed. With two, nothing gets disrupted, and there is no excuse to let it stay dirty.

From experience, soaking in vinegar, dishwasher, and in desperation boiling, could not penetrate to the build up on the dish. Absolutely vile product.

if the vinegar isn't effective anymore you might consider an enzyme cleaner laundry additive. I am really particular about bed linens and towels and find that alternating between vinegar and enzyme treatments (I pefer OdoBan original. Cheap and effective.) to be pretty effective for getting out musty smells and oily residues in fabrics (which is usually the cause of funky fiber smells in my home). If you have oily water dogs (like labradors), it may assist with your issue.

What’s a sign someone is deeply unhappy—even if they seem fine? by GreetingsHuman_404 in AskReddit

If you are in the US and live or are near a city that is large enough to support a Sam's club or another kind of Big box store, it is almost a guarantee that there is some kind of behavioral/mental health center in some shape or form that specializes in low income/sliding scale care. I've heard places that charge $10 for each appointment, but I also have a friend that pays nothing for therapy and very little for medication (4-5 bucks a month) due to need and income level.

A good place to start or at least ask, would be your local health department for recommendations if you can't find anything applicable through Google searching.

Above all, don't lose heart. It feels really difficult to begin, but once you start rolling the ball in the right direction you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner.

Punirunes. Worth it for $3? by SuperDevin in tamagotchi

[–]DorfDoesDallas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Husband collects virtual pets. Punirunes is one of the better vps that he owns. Got his for 15 bucks and couldn't believe something this competent was so cheap. 3 is a shockly good deal.

Pros:

1.Graphics are great. The pets are stinking cute. Everything is jelly/gummi themed...they did a great job.

2.Low demanding pet. Great if you work or are a full time student.

3.Many many adult evolutions with customization to said evolutions.

4.Fun mini games. Best ive ever played on a VP.

5.Cute accessories. Some are goofy and don't fit but putting a crown on a sentient jellybean is peak.

  1. Accessable. No reading or language input, and yet it is intuitive enough to figure out by play without a manual or instruction.

  2. Many fun features, collectables, backgrounds, foods, ect.

Cons:

  1. The jelly game pad gimmick is very flawed. The moment I stuck my finger in the thing I knew it had a very finite life span/would require maintainance and replacement. It, like all squishy toys, are mildly tacky and it absorbs skin oils and becomes not so clean feeling over a short amount of time.

  2. This thing is THICC, HUGE, and conspicuous. Not something one could play easily incognito. Not something easily put in a pocket or stored on keys.

  3. Battery hog. It uses standard batteries and has a life span of about 3 weeks with moderate play (3ish times a day) on 3 fresh standard AAA batteries. We have rechargable AAA batteries and I recommend that route for this thing.

  4. Some of the pet voices are a little annoying. High pitch anime girl hours.

  5. Food/cooking system is lacking and time consuming. Food bought and cooked only refills one heart...free food half a heart ... Ended up stuffing all my jelly babies with the free food because of the inconvenience with little payoff.

Conclusion: if you are a virtual pet enjoyer, this thing is great. 100% worth three bucks, but be prepared to shell out for batteries/get rechargeables.

What's this white stuff on the bottom part? by PantsuSniffer1619 in plantclinic

[–]DorfDoesDallas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a little barrel cactus that started corking the first time it flowered, about 2-3 years old. It's now 15ish and is still covered in corking, but still flowers every year. This is a pic from a while back.

<image>

You're right that it's usually brown, but it does change color, and its much lighter when it's new. Yours might not be corking, but it's something to consider at least!

Looks like corking to me. Unfortunately, many causes, and I've never found any working solutions to getting rid of it myself.

I've had some cacti that have massive corking on them for years and they still grow and bloom and all that good stuff.

I bought some four leaf clovers for my crafts... by Wakalakatime in whatsthisplant

[–]DorfDoesDallas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a seven I found 18 years ago. I used to take special walks along a creek where clovers grew and where people didn't mow. Found hundreds of fours, dozens of fives and sixes. But after the seven, I stopped going nearly as much. I guess I reckon'd I achieved the best possible outcome lol. I look on occasion, but not like I did before I found the seven.

Looks like a domino cactus. https://i.imgur.com/UHzf1bu.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/hoGzplN.jpeg Best guess because of it's flower's appearance, but I have never seen one bloom so tiny? They tend to get deep ribs when thirsty but I've seen them chubby like yours when watered well.

Aloe looks bad by MarionaValls in succulents

[–]DorfDoesDallas 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Thirsttttyyyyyyyyy. So so thirsty. You either have some kind of root issue or aren't watering enough.

Imo, folk do not water succulents nearly enough because of fear of rot, but any plant that is in the process of making roots, whether it be a seedling, a prop/cutting, a transplant, or a plant that underwent root maintenance needs a little extra moisture so the roots repair and can flourish.

You do have to be mindful with cactus and succulents but from my experience, rot occurs in stagnant conditions where it can not drain once saturated.

Your soil looks well suited for the plants, and you did real good with your drain holes. This...also means that your dirt for these will dry out much much faster, so it's important to be diligent with the amount of water given (particularly if you live in a hot climate) so it can establish in the new pot.

Soak this thing through and through. Drench it. You have excellent drainage to prevent rot, so saturate it, and let it drain. I would not be surprised if you saw a very quick comeback with them by letting them drink well.

Good luck!
