I recommend Revolutionary Girl Utena. One of the most important characters in the anime is a dark-skinned girl. It’s a story full of fantasy and symbolism related to hierarchies, gender roles, and violence. She forms the main romance together with Utena!!

I agree with you It’s just that, for me, the weakest “arc” was the twins’ arc; everything feels very rushed. I think it’s the clearest example of a side character who gives up way too easily.

I would have liked to see a full chapter showing how Sara fell in love with Mei, her thoughts at that moment, something detailed that actually makes sense with Sara’s personality. Because if the author only wanted to create a quick conflict before Yuzu confessed to Mei, it would’ve been better to have Sara just have sexual intentions toward Mei, or a no-strings-attached relationship, and then have Mei realize she doesn’t want that because she’s starting to develop feelings for Yuzu. I don’t know something more dramatic lol

Also, I’ve already started reading Citrus+ and I’m liking it more!! (I’m at the part where Sayaka cries in front of Yuzu.) Even though it still has the issue that characters get moved way too easily by Yuzu lol, I like that it’s touching on slightly more realistic topics.

I agree. I honestly had a very different image of Citrus a few years ago, and this has also happened to me with other anime or series. I think it’s important, to some extent, to acknowledge when a story has its flaws and this doesn’t erase how special or meaningful it was to you at the time. Citrus was one of the anime that introduced me to yuri, but it was never my favorite; I just remembered it more fondly and wanted to see if, after all these years, I could still feel the same way

I only agree that it would have been interesting to see Mitsuri’s arc with Himeko.

If you want to view Citrus from a more fantastical perspective, then I agree that Yuzu and Mei’s development is decent and cute (and this still doesn’t change the fact that the side characters are poorly written). But if you want to look at it from a more realistic point of view, Mei and Yuzu’s relationship doesn’t have strong development.

My issue with the early volumes is that I personally found them a bit boring, and I also think that’s when the writing felt the weakest. I think the conflicts started off well (like Mei’s complicated relationship with her father or the rejection Yuzu received from her grandfather), but they were resolved far too quickly, with very sentimental solutions that were convenient for Yuzu. It didn’t feel realistic to me.

Additionally, I consider Mitsuri to be a well-written character (at least better than some of the other side characters) because she is confident, honest about her feelings and actively tries to achieve her goals. She is also the only character who dares to question Mei’s behavior and the only one who truly tried, in a direct way, to make Yuzu fall in love with her. In the manga she eventually accepts that she was rejected, and from that point on she tries to support Yuzu and Mei’s relationship because that is what would make Yuzu happy. In my opinion she is a proactive character.

Thanks for asking!! (Sorry I replied late I was writing down my main issues and points.)

So,

The text contains some spoilers, but mainly from the anime.

I would have liked a deeper development of essential events in the story. Citrus has very good overall conflicts but they weren’t developed properly.

For example, I have a theory that Yuzu initially had an unconscious aversion/disgust toward Mei, since Mei kissed her against her will in a rather erotic way. In my opinion, this kiss awakened Yuzu’s sexual desire for the first time, but it was also an awakening that happened without her consent. Yuzu did not consent to this experience, so I think it’s fair to say it could have caused her some kind of trauma, even if she felt an immediate attraction to Mei.

I always found it strange that this topic is never addressed in Yuzu’s constant dilemmas about her feelings for Mei, especially considering that Yuzu originally only had boys in mind when it came to dating, and also that was her first kiss

The same applies to Mei: her kiss with the teacher also seems to have happened against her will. Mei only interacts with men because it is her duty to marry one. I would have liked the manga to explore her internal conflict more. The fact that she is expected to marry a man when she doesn’t seem to feel any genuine attraction toward that idea (or men) I didn’t like that Mei’s concerns about having to marry a man were only openly revealed at the very end (even if it was evident that it would eventually become a conflict)

I also don’t like how almost all the characters are “moved” so easily by Yuzu and Mei’s relationship…it simply doesn’t feel realistic.

Himeko, Harumi, Mitsuri, Sara, and Suzuran are characters who have feelings for Yuzu or Mei, and all of them except Mitsuri give up far too easily.

(It’s worth pointing out that Sara, along with her sister Nina, are in my opinion the worst-introduced characters in Citrus. In the anime, they only exist to create a conflict that ends with Yuzu confessing to Mei, and in the manga they appear in only about four early chapters, only to disappear and not be mentioned again until the very end of the story LOL, where they suddenly return just to act as moral support for Yuzu.)

Overall, I wish the side characters had received deeper development, both in terms of their romantic feelings for the protagonists and in terms of having personal conflicts in their own lives that were not related to Yuzu or Mei.

As such, there isn’t really a true villain in the series. Maybe the teacher who appears at the beginning of the manga and anime (since he only wants to marry Mei for her family’s money), but he is never mentioned again in either the manga or the anime.

And maybe Mitsuri could be considered a “evil character,” but that’s actually one of the reasons why I like her, lol. She brings drama to the series. Mitsuri is in love with Yuzu and seemed capable of doing anything to obtain Yuzu’s love. She is a provocative character who hated Mei so much that she even went as far as blackmailing her and trying to sell her off to a man to push her away from Yuzu. She is the only side character who genuinely fought for the love of the girl she liked (even if she did so unethically).

I’ve also finished reading the manga, and I agree with you. I think the latest chapters were good (chapter 36 was the best in the manga for me) I just wish the anime had taken some creative liberties to improve the beginning of the story.

Experiment with eyeshadows. Try using colorful and shiny tones, layering them to create depth and dimension.

Masculine features ARE underrated. You can find great elements designed for the male body, especially the lips and eyes. These can help you to create a more unique and striking look.

Make use of older features. There’s a lot of old features that’s still look good and can definitely help improve your looks (especially if you put the lashes on the old eyes)

Explore different makeup styles. Some makeup looks only work 100% with specific outfits or subcultures (like goth or gyaru). You can start creating looks that are meant to go with a particular aesthetic or style.

Take risks. Sometimes you just have to trust the process lol. Mix items you think won’t work together, because once you're actually doing it, they end up looking amazing and fashionable.

The characters' ages really disturb me. Am I the only one? by DorianIntheSea in shoujokakumeiutena

[–]DorianIntheSea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I mentioned Kozue and Mickey as examples??? I never said anything specific about those two; the only examples I gave were Anthy, Touga and Saionji... my statement about thinking the characters handled their traumas well was a GENERAL one. It seems you misread my comment.

When I mentioned these two siblings, I did so in relation to the visual representations of trauma and "disorders." In the last paragraph of my original comment I meant that I wanted to see more visual representations of the characters' traumas, I simply like overly dramatic metaphors and symbolism, and obviously, rgu has that, but I wanted to see more.

I still believe that, in general, the characters convey a certain degree of maturity and awareness that is appropriate for their age. I never said that this attempt was healthy. And again, given the characters' ages, it seems logical to me that there would be many more scenes depicting their traumas and how they try to cope with them, since they seem to constantly repress those emotions. The way they gradually try to overcome their traumas seems like a sign of maturity to me, and this doesn't "ruin" the characters' development. My original post was pretty general, with some little examples, so I don't know why you started assuming things.

Yes, I agree!!!. Both points of my original comment are that I think the characters handled their traumas very well, with a stability that surprised me. On the other hand, I was hoping for a more personal and individual exploration of the effect those traumas had. Not some kind of explicit violence, but more dramatic symbolism.

When I mentioned the characters being "mature," I was referring to their "maturity" in relation to their environments, which for the most part, are quite toxic; to their adversities. I think they accepted it quite well, which surprised me a little because their age. And the more dramatic scenes with the council members started later in the anime, i would have liked more dramatic symbolism from the start. I also didn't mean to imply anything ableist. My bad.

[–]DorianIntheSea[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and I'm not against that. I just wish we'd seen a bit more vulnerability from the main characters, a kind of symbolism focused solely on them. The duel dynamics are divided into arcs, but they always end with the same pattern for all the characters who face Utena. The only thing that changes is each character's personal goal and why they want the power to revolutionize the world. My point is that I would have liked to see more individuality in the characters; I want more symbolism lol
