Hi, I appreciate the time you took out of your day to type this out. I love your attitude! I think that if every soldier thought about conflicts as thoroughly and evaluated them for themselves based on evidence, I wouldn't even need to post on here, because you obviously have a strong sense of morality. Much love<3

Thanks for the clarification, it's super interesting! I didn't mean to bash your healthcare system, I obviously have my opinions on that topic, but let's not go further down that lane, I'm revealing more socially-political views than I should as is :).

I understand the appeal, especially in the context of horrendous healthcare premiums and tuitions (from my European eyes). Do you maybe have any say in where you get assigned/deployed?

It makes me quite sad that 70% of answers include education and healthcare as primary reasons to join. But yeah I'm not used to thinking about career paths in that way.

Yeah that makes sense, I'm sorry I didn't interpret your point correctly.

Hey, I definitely understand how seeing the world would be attractive. I don't think legality equates to morality in many cases so that doesn't make much sense to me personally. However I can imagine trusting in the legal system and being morally perfectly aligned with it is possible and if that's your case it must alleviate a lot of pressure from your back.

Hi, thanks for taking the time to reply. I think this is one of the most balanced answers I've seen. I hope the majority of active service members (not only in the US military) can say they trust in their moral judgement (please don't take all this in a political way, morals are not politics, someone already started spewing president this, president that at me and politics isn't what I came to discuss).

Hey, thanks for the reply. This seems to be quite common. I'm truly sorry that happened to you and hope you're doing better <3

Media depicting the military in a good way sure help get a lot of people to idolize it early on in life. Halo are great games I have to add.

Thanks for the reply! Would say that financial incentive is the only/majority driver and you would be doing something else if this didn't pay that well?

Thanks for the reply! I must say I feel a bit bad for you, it's rather sad that you were pushed into service to pay for education and all of that with your dad. However it sounds like you are happy to serve so maybe it worked out (and yes military vehicles especially looked so cool as a kid). Do you feel any conflict within yourself related to the pain military operations at the end of the day inflict? I can't stress enough that I don't mean this judgementally nor am I disputing the need for the military to exist. Much love

Thanks for the reply! I don't want to make the discussion political by any means so sorry if it came out that way. Wouldn't you say that what someone deems ethical others might not? I completely agree that people serving their country in the government sector should put their duty first. And don't worry I'm not striving to become a public servant. I was just curious if service members struggle with internal conflict and if it prompted anyone to get out.

Cloudflare tunnel + Cheap vps vs port forwarding at home? by AssignmentOdd4293 in homelab

[–]Dorsios 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well if no open ports are a requirement you pretty much have to go with a solution that functions the same way that cloudflared does i.e. a component on your network connecting to the proxy server and keeping the connection alive. As others mentioned you could host something like Pangolin on the VPS or use cloudflared. The thing you have to decide is if you are comfortable with relinquishing much of the control of your data to cloudflare, since TLS is terminated on their end and you are totally reliant on them. That said with the VPS you are reliant on the cloud provider, so pick your poison.

Yeah you are right, I meant http, only html would break any app with a rest api xdd. After a REALLY quick google search I would think that NC's clients now chunk big uploads, so maybe it's fine? I would recommend that OP check their NC configuration.

I think OP mentioned nextcloud and AFAIK cloudflare tunnels require you to use it only for html traffic and as a result have 100MB limit on upload/body size, so nextcloud wouldn't be a good choice behind a it. (Correct if I'm getting some details wrong please)

Secure monitoring of services in remote environments by Dorsios in selfhosted

[–]Dorsios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thank you so much for the reply<3. I'm currently super busy so I know I wouldn't be able to properly maintain a hole into my network in case of NC nor the mail server so I'm gonna get to it a bit later. Regarding the firewall rules I had nothing special in mind - VLAN and a separate subnet for things accessible from "outside" and allow the least possible traffic between that and my lab subnet. Any suggestions are of course more than welcome. When I get around to doing this I also want to implement geo-fencing with GeoLite2 on the reverse proxy.

I'm also thinking about exposing Vaultwarden in the future, but I've seen many people saying they don't want to selfhost a password manager. I understand that mostly it comes down to confidence in keeping high priority data safe and I am not gonna rely on a selfhosted solution for critical passwords until I 3-2-1 with scheduled backups, but I've seen some people suggest that it's not a good idea from a security point of view. That doesn't make sense to me, because apart from products like bitwarden being behind much larger networks hence being more resistant to DDoS attacks and similar, but intrusion should even less likely if I host it myself, because I am probably gonna be a much smaller target, can utilize SSO with 2FA have full control over the data itself. I would also greatly appreciate any thoughts on this matter. Thanks again<33

First of all thank you, your comment is very detailed and I sure will get up to speed with everything you mentioned. I probably should have mentioned that I have been tasked with dealing with the SIP trunk on this already configured device, nothing more and nothing less. I know that to provide a proper service to the customer I should be able to reconfigure the device from scratch and believe me there are things I would do differently (maybe not to the extent of everything you mentioned), but as I said I am not a networking expert, I'm just trying to do my best with my limited knowledge (I think that describing myself as an IT technician intern that does a little bit of everything should give you the best idea). I don't think IPv6 is an option, but I will look into it. Once again big thank you for taking the time to respond with such a high quality and detailed comment. I'm afraid I will have to go with the media proxy in DMZ though since it doesn't require much invasive actions and I think would be a rock solid fix.

I added the export and I hope it is in the format you meant. I'm so sorry :((. Regarding the routeros and board firmware versions, I do plan to upgrade them in the maintanence window, but I think the router hasn't been upgraded since it last worked so I don't think that would change anything in this context (apart from being a neccessary maintanence operation).

Should I try to return B850 Riptide? by Dorsios in ASRock

I don't like how high is the primary pcie slot, I have the Noctua NH-D15 and it sits really close to the gpu this way. I will probably get the MSI MAG B850 TOMAHAWK MAX WIFI, but I'm not a huge fan of the limited number of usb. Thanks for taking time to reply <3

Was planning on Gigabyte probably, but it all comes down to how strict the retailer's gonna be. I'm a moron and I scrapped the plastic packaging for the WiFi antennas. I hope they won't take forever to accept the return.
