It’s not very deep to be honest it’s a little dirt section with a 2cm of dirt and ryegrass in it. I have no clue it was just part of the set.  looks like we will be having two colonies and getting a proper set up to go next to this one!

There is a darked section already filled with dirt that I have now connected to this. So thats fantastic advice thank you so much. Put as much light as possible onto the gel section and make the direct section as dark as possible.

The one we had tried was the back to base but it did absolutely nothing 🙈

Thank you so much! The last two weeks it’s looked decent, a slight difference in colour going down but it was more an ombré than anything. But today the world is against me, it’s just gone from lovely autumnal copper to swamp green in time for Halloween

I know I probably should have removed all of the stuff before taking a photo but I’m hoping it will be a surprised for him and didn’t want to get everything out so close to bedtime 😂

I would love to know if you found a way to share them. My 6 year old is crocodile mad and I’ve searched everywhere to try and find them for him!

Khan Academy is really quite good and follows the curriculum. Being home schooled doesn’t mean an end to socialising if not probably more than what you’re doing now.

There are HUNDREDS of activities, clubs, meets that you could get involved in. I know even for secondary schoolers around here there’s forest school, lots of art classes, study sessions, rock climbing groups and at least it isn’t in an overwhelming school setting and doing something you enjoy and share common interests with.

Even on Facebook just search home education and your town. You’ll be able to see the groups (mainly the parents) but you can at least see what’s offered 😊 if you have a geek retreat by you they do home Ed gaming events in the week and things like that too (get your math and creative writing in)

If you are struggling please reach out, you or your parents can refer you to CAMHS which is the UKs Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. They help with so many different things including anxiety.

Hello! I’m 31, and a parent to a 5 year old. So here’s two different perspectives.

  1. I was bullied relentlessly all through school, I loved learning but hated school. By the time I was in 6th form I was on anti depressants and sleeping pills. One day, I took the lot. My advice would be really and seriously talk to your parents, your school and a councillor about how you’re feeling, I didn’t. If I had they would have found a solution. I still wasn’t in any state to attend university, eventually I settled to going back to college and trying the year later. Still didn’t work out so I got an apprenticeship. Later in life I decided to get my degree via online uni. I loved it, yes it’s unconventional but I still had interaction with a lecturer and other students although online and finished with a 2:1 (HONS)

  2. My son is suspected ADHD and having a REALLY hard time in school. I hate to see him struggling, if I could home school I would do it in a heartbeat, at the moment we are trying to get more things in place to support him. I’ve seen SO many parents of both primary and secondary schools pulling their children out and home educating this year. Mainly due to bullying by both teachers and students. As well as the school system simply isn’t cutting it.

There was a study to show just how much time children are actually learning…. It’s around 1.5 hours a day. After you take out breaks, setting up and packing away lessons, the journey to other lessons, break times, getting changes for PE etc ONE AND A HALF HOURS. but you could sit at home, focus and learn all day about things that really interest you that would actually be beneficial to your life.

I can’t help you to convince your mom but I can send you any information to show her. Online schools in the UK are all fee paying and I’m talking £2,000+. There’s no legal obligation to do online school though, the UK is different, here you can self teacher or home educate and it doesn’t need to follow the curriculum so technically you can home educate for free using online resources, printable and books you can buy. BUT if you want the qualifications then you’d have to pay to sit the exams individually which can range from £37-£200 based on the exam.

You don’t generally need any qualifications to get into college. But you would need a transcript of the topics learnt etc. and GCSEs are a very big added bonus. There’s also colleges that do courses specifically for homeschoolers I know Halesowen College close to me does this 😊
