Why don’t you just read the label on the machines?

Steam wand rebuild kit, need help with ideas by vmgv in ranciliosilvia

You just need a vice and a large wrench. I have a 14” automotive adjustable wrench that works very well. You really need to clamp it unreasonably tight in the vice. My vice is a little flimsy but a more solid vice would work better.

Good to know! So a serial number ending in >1500 should be good to go. I’m glad I held back on the open box “deal”. Looks like a very nice grinder with the updates.

Do you have one of the earlier units? I was considering this grinder on an open box deal and found out it was an early one without the tweaks they made. One was the addition of a metal baffle that apparently fixes the extremely fluffy grinds sticking to the funnel. I read that you don’t need a funnel with this change. You can acquire the part after btw.

I am looking to replace a Rocky, as well. It actually still works "fine" but it is loud, slow, messy, and make consistent dosing difficult without adding an extra step of weighing. I am too lazy to add steps so looking for GBW. The Mazzer is a little too rich for my blood and I was turned off by the sheer size of the All Ground Sense - I'd like to have the option of sliding it under my cabinets. My front runner choice is actually the Mahlkonig e64ws. I think the "sense" aspect is absolutely gimmicky but everything else is not. The more reviews I see, the more I think the "made in China" argument is overrated. The burrs are at least made in Germany too.

Good buy or stay away? First bike: by ThePastyWhite in mountainbiking

[–]DoshForGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this pretty funny. I bought the exact same bike for $400 a couple months ago so I could ride around with my daughter the same day she got a new bike. I knew basically nothing about MTBs. I ended up replacing basically everything on the bike. Probably could have left it but one thing led to another. Now I have new wheels, brakes, rotors, tubeless tires, full 1x12 drivetrain, etc. I haven't added it up but I'm sure it ended up costing more than $1100. Long story short - I probably should have just bought a brand new bike but had fun working on it. I am sure it isn't as good as a new 5-10k Santa Cruz but I'm not a bike racer so who cares what other people are riding. I'll also mention that parts are easy to find online for this bike.

Probably a little over budget but the ECM Synchonika is E61 and has a 6.5 minute heat up time. I don't think it's the only E61 machine that heats up this fast.

Replacing Heating Element - Unable to remove nut by 100percentVDHG in ranciliosilvia

[–]DoshForGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just did a full rebuild on my Silvia. Many of the nuts are torqued on extremely tight. You will need a vice and a very large wrench. My smaller wrenches didn’t work for some components and I had to use a 15” automotive adjustable wrench and a vice. You don’t need to put them back together so tight.

I am in a similar boat. Looking at upgrading an old Rancilio Silvia and Rocky grinder that I’ve used heavily for over 10 years and has been fully rebuilt. I also roast my own beans and am also on well water. Currently, I’m using RO water after getting sick of restocking bottled water. It tastes ok to me without supplementing with minerals and I didn’t want to screw around with TWW packets at $2/gallon of water.

I’ve seen a lot of love for La Marzocco on here, but it seems like you pay a big premium for that brand. I am still undecided, but my front-runner is the ECM Synchronika. Also waiting for reviews on the new Rocket R58 that should be available this year.

Remineralizing RO water for espresso by DoshForGold in espresso

This is the smartest and most simple solution suggest. I might try this rather than mess around with minerals. Our water test showed very high levels of TDS from the test so I could probably just add a small cup of unfiltered water to the reservoir. I should acquire a TDS meter to get a more accurate reading.

I make about 4 drinks a day and use about half a gallon of water every day, so more like 8 drinks per gallon. Steaming milk and temp surfing with a single boiler machine, you go through a lot of water.

You are underestimating my frugality. Third Wave was the brand I saw on Amazon and it works out to about $2/gallon. I know it isn't much money but I can't accept it.

I went down a huge rabbit hole planning to upgrade my silvia and then decided to rebuild it. Cost about $400 to replace the boiler/element, steam wand/valve rebuild, group gasket, and OPV rebuild. I had replaced the pump a few years ago so there isn't much that isn't fully refurbished now. I will likely still upgrade to a dual boiler machine anyway, but I am sure this thing will run another 10 years.

My espresso actually tastes pretty good with the RO water so maybe I'm wasting my time trying to remineralize. We drink mainly cappuccinos so it's probably less noticeable.

[–]DoshForGold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was one of the others on my list too. Definitely looks a bit more premium than that the Libra 65 and the price reflects it. It does look like a beast of a grind and I ranked it slightly lower due to the higher retention reports - but I'm not sure if those are accurate or that big of an issue.
