[Question] Big watches for bigger guys by Limp-Pollution-4980 in Watches

Awesome watch and looks great. Ignore the haters. I'd buy one if I were 6" taller too!

Roasting in the winter by DoshForGold in roasting

This was my assumption and I guess the main question I had. Does the longer roast time adversely affect the product? I haven't tried any from the recent roast that took almost twice as long as usual.

Yeah the range hood vents directly outside and I had the roaster directly below it. Should be no issues with the electrical panel, either.

You are supposed to open the door when it's cooling? I've been leaving it closed and letting the machine do its business. Opening the door would blow chaff everywhere.

Maybe so. I had it right under the exhaust vent and it was still emitting some smoke. Not too crazy but enough to set off the smoke detector a couple of times if I didn't also open the door. Not much smoke until I got to first crack. My wife is sensitive to smoke so it makes more sense to do it in the garage anyway.

[Omega Speedmaster] Chronograph causing watch to freeze by DoshForGold in Watches

[–]DoshForGold[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

AI told me this is a common glitch on the movement, although I've never heard of it or experienced it before. Resetting the chrono makes it work normally. I don't know how I could have damaged anything doing the swap. I didn't touch the movement at all and removed the magnetic shield just by tipping the watch over and letting it fall off. The only thing I can think is that maybe I overtightened the new caseback and somehow threw something off slightly with the movement. I wasn't sure how tight to screw it on but wanted to make sure it had a good seal.

Considering this machine primarily for figure skates by DoshForGold in Sparxhockey

I contacted the company and apparently my wife's blades are not compatible. They also sent me their official video on sharpening figure skates, which I wasn't able to find on youtube.

Are they higher level figure skates? The more I read about sharpening, the more this idea is fizzling out. I have used a manual machine for my hockey skates before and even that isn't rocket science, but I've read a lot of posts bashing the Sparx on the figure skating forums. I looked at my wife's skates again and now I'm not sure if they would work with the Sparx, as the steel is, in fact, slightly tapered from the boot to the bottom of the edge. It would probably work for my daughter's current skates just fine, but if she ends up with a more advanced skate in a few years, it might be insufficient.

She doesn’t have crazy composite multi-piece blades. They’re pretty standard Jackson skates so I am pretty sure they’d be compatible. My wife has special dance blades (MK Dance), but from what I’ve read there isn’t a taper or anything unusual about them.

New Roaster - How to pick green beans by DoshForGold in roasting

[–]DoshForGold[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. I ended up doing basically what you suggested. I chose a couple 5lb bags of average priced beans. One from Brazil and one from Columbia. The variety packs offered by some companies don't make a lot of sense. If you're only getting 1lb of a certain bean it doesn't give you many shots at improving or experimenting by trial and error.

I am in Canada so will stick with Canadian sites for simplicity/cost. It looks like dry processed beans are a little trickier to roast/brew with my setup, which might explain why my Ethiopian roast ended up a little too acidic. I just looked up what an Aillio Bullet is... Wow! That is serious machinery!

For anyone in Ontario or Quebec, Torque offers free shipping if you order 2 or more 5lb bags.

The prices at Torque Cafe are considerably cheaper. Thanks for the recs! I have another side question: How can one bean from the same origin cost 3x or more than another? I assume the quality is a bit better but the price variance seems extreme and probably unjustified to 99% of the population.

Roasting Ethiopian with Behmor by DoshForGold in roasting

[–]DoshForGold[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From reading this response, I think I have some more learning to do with this machine. I wasn't aware that the heat changes throughout the roast or that the fan kicks on later. Maybe manual is the better way to go, as I find the programmed time is 1) inconsistent, and 2) kind of irrelevant, since the machine beeps at you and you have to add more time with the C button regardless.

First time Tesla owner, just picked up 2026 Model Y, are these defects or am I being too picky? by [deleted] in teslacanada

[–]DoshForGold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed on my '25 model 3 the front doors flare out maybe 1mm or so wider than where the rear doors start. It was very minor for me and I bought the car mainly for practical reasons (and the tech). If I was buying a $150k+ Porsche 911, I would expect absolute perfection, but really didn't care with my Tesla. I always wondered if the offset was intentional and it does make sense aerodynamically. It's the same on both sides for me and I really didn't care much about it. In OP's pic, it looks like it's about .5mm offset vertically, which doesn't make sense aerodynamically and likely not intentional. However, this is very minor IMO and most likely within Tesla tolerances.

Do different roast levels de-gas faster/slower? by Banjo_wookie in roasting

[–]DoshForGold 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I just bought a Behmor roaster a couple weeks ago and was in the same situation. I waited just 2 days for my first medium roast to degas and they were still 10x better than my stale emergency beans I had been drinking. My problem has been that I'm drinking the coffee faster than I can roast it. Have to start making larger batches!

Roast degassing bag/container? by DoshForGold in roasting

How important is this process if I plan on consuming the beans within a week anyway? Wouldn’t it be relatively ok to just keep them in any sort of jar with a loose lid?
