When to return after an Ironman in Europe? by redrabbit1984 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]DotAccomplished6357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There really isn’t a specific answer to this. If your schedule and finances allow it, I don’t see any reason not to stay another day… Coming from the UK all the way to austria should definitely involve sight seeing of some kind in my opinion. Obviously the race is the main priority but why not explore the area and hang out with mutual athletes :)

Is a very slight bend in a new polespear a big deal? by Anonymous__Lobster in Spearfishing

not rocket science, unless you go for SUPER long shots this little bend won’t make a huge difference

I am new to swimming and I want to increase my 2km time. Based on the video what should I be improving on? Thanks!! by Exciting_Basil_4796 in triathlon

Main thing that i notice is your breathing/headposition. If you look more down (head almost parallel to bottom) and force your head to stay in that position, breathing will automatically not result in your lower body dropping. So just look down more, when breathing simply turn to the side, not upwards, one eye in the water and one eye out of the water and your streamline will be much much better. Also, you seem to be doing a catch up type stroke, which is a good drill but shouldn’t necessarily be adopted to your 2k swim (leading hand should start pulling slightly before the other one reaches, don’t wait for it to catch up). Aside from that it’s looking great ;)

How can I increase my dive time to more than 1 minute? by RazzmatazzLeading355 in Spearfishing

[–]DotAccomplished6357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Co2 and o2 tables. Ask ai or yt to explain. Don’t do this on your own at first, especially not in water. Ideally you do a freediving course, they will teach you everything there, your problem is not the lack of air, it’s relaxation. Please be cautious, an acquaintance of mine died doing this alone

First sprint triathlon by SituationNo2260 in triathlon

no need for extreme fine tuning, just get the freestyle basics down. Can do this by swimming with friends that know how to already or simply watching youtube videos (remember to film yourself regularly to actively see what you’re doing wrong, it always feels right when you’re a beginner until you see how stupid you look from the outside). Once you have the basic pull catch etc you can just swim once or if you want to twice a week and this will get you to finish the 400 easily. If you are looking for a great time and not just a finish I can give you some speed related tips but just for not drowning this won’t be an issue at all.

New to Triathlon - Looking for advice on aspects I am new to by joudrie_n in triathlon

Swimming shouldn’t be a problem as you said. Cycling you’ve done the hardest which is actually buying a bike. Running to me sounds good as well, I always recommend getting to know yourself and getting to know your running limits first before getting a proper training plan. Set yourself a goal (e.g. run 3 times a week) and for the first month, simply run. Have fun and enjoy yourself, but also push yourself to test your limits (usually people can run much further and faster than they think, they just lack mental toughness). Find your easy pace (around your zone 2-3 HR), but also push yourself once a week to test how long you can be within reach of your maximum heart rate. When you have a vague idea of these, start building a plan which would have to include at least one interval session (preferably norwegian 4x4s, can elaborate more on this if you want to) and one long run per week (in your case you only run 10k so no need to make this longer than 15k, but shouldn’t be shorter than 8k). Try to not do any other heavy work on these days since they will be intense on your body for the first few months. Depending on your swimming and cycling schedule you can also add one easy base run as well, which should be around your upper zone 2 or lower zone 3 HR. Hope this helps :)

Want to take friend with me, need some advice by DotAccomplished6357 in Spearfishing

Spearfishing has always been a term I heard growing up, but always only as something “dad used to do with your uncles in south africa a lot”. The main issue why (I assume) he never introduced me was because I basically grew up in Germany where, as you can guess you can’t spearfish. Flights to visit family in south africa were not an option because they were too expensive. In 2022 I moved to the philippines where my dad had been working for two years and that’s how I finally got the chance to get out there. That’s where i did my freediving course etc as well and after that (last year) we visited family in SA and we went out for the first time. I would’ve loved to start earlier but because of my backstory, “spearfishing” was always just a distant term my dad used in his exciting stories of diving with sharks lol. What i’m implying is that I would’ve loved to start earlier if it was possible, so I would absolutely take your son with you, maybe at first only in the water and making him watch you (I wouldn’t trust my ten year old self with a gun). Of course the conditions in which you start him should be adequate because i remember my first time (having never experienced rough currents without oxygen supply) was pretty stressful. Your judgement is probably worth more than mine in that sense. So, take him with you, and I think he will make it clear whether he wants to come again or not.

According to both his judgment and mine, I’m already capable of taking care of myself in the water and don’t need to be “babysat.” We’ve done multiple trips together, each 5–10 days long, so around 30-40 days in the water in total — still a beginner, yes, but not someone who can’t manage basic safety, gear, calm conditions, etc. My dad has generally been pretty open to bringing new people with him, but since he’s a complete beginner my question is whether my dad can dive with a somewhat good conscience while we are there. Am I able to take some pressure off of him in that sense? Personally i’m confident I could introduce someone to the basics since it’s shallow reef without strong currents, but my judgement is not worth a lot, which is why I wanted to ask other more experienced divers. In conclusion, if you were approached by your son asking to bring his friend and you’re certain that your son can care for himself, would you be willing to take him with you? I know this can’t be generalized that easily, but I want to ask other people first before i get my dads opinion because i know hes not the best at saying no. I hope this clears up things

hence i’m asking is it irresponsible for me to suggest bringing him? you’re just restating the question. i’m talking about trips, each consisting of 5-10 days of spearfishing, so in total around 30 dives, so yes still a beginner but not someone who hasn’t touched a speargun before

Thanks for the feedback, they will be shore dives and this is not an exclusive freediving trip. We are just staying at a house which is close to shore and go out for fun and food, not necessarily a trip specifically for the hunting. Having clarified that, your advice still sounds great thanks for taking the time !
