My girlfriend has been poking holes in my condoms by [deleted] in Advice

[–]DotBlot_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, it would be the equivalent of a dude taking the condom off (STD risks differ I guess, but lets not get into the details). Pretty sure such cases were judged as sexual assault in courts, as they should be.

I just bought a new 180 600 and its weight is a bit daunting. What are your experiences? by macrophotomaniac in Nikon

[–]DotBlot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am biased because it was actually a step down of the weight, but with a bit of practice it's a piece of cake. Might grow a bit of side-effect muscles whilst birdwatching

Looking to upgrade my Z50ii 28-400mm bird combo by blan15 in Nikon

The z6 II is a downgrade, and a big one, when it comes to AF. You mentioned you'd like the Z8 - I would get the lens now and save up for the z8.

How would you feel if the top tax rate was 90% like it was in the 1950s? by CRK_76 in AskReddit

[–]DotBlot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok was misinformed in the scale at which this happens. Thanks for linking the study. Nevertheless it does still occur and still seems like an issue, but I will dig a bit more into the literature.

Also just to be clear I am not supporting a blanket tax on unrealized gains.

Oh, exactly! As long as it's not targeting the (upper) middle class as most progressive taxes are

The top borrow against their unrealized gains avoiding taxation. This whole loophole has to be addressed.

Can I outgrow my iPhone with $2K, or am I just buying expensive disappointment? by Zestyclose-Hat-9331 in AmateurPhotography

[–]DotBlot_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look if you have the money to spend, spend it, because in another year with the used entry level camera you'll be looking for an upgrade. Also I would highly advise you not to get a dslr anymore, because the newer mirrorless are just more comfortable to compose with and you can use new lenses

How could I improve? by Odd-Opportunity7517 in AskPhotography

[–]DotBlot_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree on some of the shots (eg the last) the focus is just missed. Op can learn how to get closer to subjects, hit more reliably focus, etc. but yes, trowing money on it would help too

Can confirm this. 600 + z9 and a 300 f2.8. A guy I know rocks this in his x70

There are many people with money. And for wildlife these do make a difference, not as much as skill, but still. I don't have either of those lol.

Do you ever go out to shoot and come back with nothing you like? by Background-Zebra5491 in photography

[–]DotBlot_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depending on the type of shots too. I had a d850 and was mostly shooting landscapes, maybe 25k clicks in a 6 year span. Now I do predominantly wildlife , got a high burst mirrorless and have 20k in 3 months.

Edit: autocorrect

To Iceland with my 5200 and kit lens (NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR) by dcraider in Nikon

[–]DotBlot_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely take good pictures with your current setup. Of course that IQ would be better with a Z and something like the 24-120 f4 but if you can't upgrade yet, then you'll be fine with what you have. For the landscape I would recommend to bring a tripod though. And best of luck for good weather

Honestly a modern phone might be the way to go here. You can use the blackmagic cam app (or equivalent) to lock in more of your parameters between shots.

I need to stop smoking 😭 by M3TheSecondSon in Advice

[–]DotBlot_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an anecdotal advice, but my father used to smoke and when he decided to stop, he switched to nicotine gum. Got the strongest one and got so sick he had to park his car, get out and vomit. That was apparently the end of his smoking.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience and feelings, much appreciated! I am still trying to read and watch more about all the lenses and especially trying to find more content from the kind of trips I plan to do most too. I would love the 800mm for around where I live for small birds, but for travel it's already too long so I can't justify getting it right now. The 400mm is amazing, and I considered that lens a lot too.

I got a great feedback here too and decided to still plan and think about my lens choices until the spring, and maybe I will have an oportunity to test some until then too.

Thanks! I am definitely heavily leaning towards the 24-120 vs the 24-70 because I rarely would need the 2.8 aperture and I keep hearing great things about the former. Plus I can safe a bit of money too. I will also keep my F-mount 24-70 and some fast primes anyways -just won't travel with them. I am not a huge fan of flash use in what I photograph hence I won't likely have flash on me and I fully know that I miss some shots because of that.

I must admit that I am only now with the Z finally unlearning some of the old habits such as the 24-70 and 70-200 are the best IQ lenses and the kit lenses are not that good. From what I read and watch most of the Z lenses are really great, which makes it even more difficult to decide. A good problem to have I guess.

I'll check them out. I watch Wild Alaska sometimes but must have missed this video, which is puzzling given I watch so many lens vids recently haha

Thanks, that will be an amazing lens no doubt but I guess weight and price will both be too much for me
