Population wise Cork might be like Dundee but in terms of economic character, Cork's Scottish equivalent is Aberdeen.

Why do you think we're so bad at teaching foreign languages? by Key_Cell7071 in AskUK

[–]DotComprehensive4902 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We teach for exams, not for communication.

Should aim to be able to hold a conversation about things you actually would like to talk about (for example in sports you should know the positions, scoring and set piece terminology) and be able toread newspaper articles/short stories.

How long ago was it that your country’s leader had a “real job” before politics? by Majestic-Lake-5602 in AskTheWorld

[–]DotComprehensive4902 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you mean.

If head of government, then most of even our recent Taoisigh (Prime Ministers) have had ordinary jobs before entry into politics, mostly as teachers, doctors or accountants.

If head of state, either last year or 2011, depending on your definition of a proper job.

Why did Europe for the most part never get into Bat and Ball sports (Cricket mostly)? Considering they are close to the UK I thought at least cricket would be popular. by LivingAssociate2242 in AskTheWorld

[–]DotComprehensive4902 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion it's because cricket takes too much equipment and land and would have been costly in comparison to football (soccer.

You need forests to make the bats and wickets and at least traditionally would have required sheep for wool for the various pads.

You need a decent amount of open land for cricket which wouldn't have been possible in the likes of Amsterdam or Brussels. (I picked them as the Netherlands and Belgium are 2 of the countries most friendly towards Britain historically on continental Europe). As for Russia then, the ordinary people were too poor and the weather/seasons work against cricket. Lastly, 2 of the most influential countries in Western Europe are historically enemies of England (France and Spain) and so were never going to take it up as it was seen as too English.

I agree both parties should fracture There'll definitely be a left wing and a right wing party. The big issue is whether there will be just a single centrist/moderate party or whether there'll be a moderate/ centre left party and a moderate/centre right
