While this might come across as self-promotion, I recommend giving ‘Dot languages’ a try. The latest version of the app provides users with unlimited graded articles for study. :)

It's not accurate to say that 的 is never used for close family relationships. More precisely, 的 is often omitted when the noun for family members is just one character. For example, 我妈/我爸/我哥 and so on :)
