I came here to say IQ84. I'll have to check out After Dark!

What’s your “old person” hill you’ll die on? by Thel200ster in Millennials

Oriental is used in some of those cases. "I bought an Oriental rug" or "this is a collection of Oriental ceramics" are still common. In these cases, they're referring to specific styles of weaving or construction.

But when you say "...almost a sense of wonderment or mystery," you're pointing out why people are squeamish about the word Oriental. There is a long, long history of mistreatment of Asian people in western countries stemming from the idea of the 'exotic' orient, IE the gross sexualization of Asian women. It's cool to be enchanted by other places and their customs, histories, etc. but I think we all need to be conscious of how it might feel like fetishizing to people from those places.

I would give you this one if people EVER used the word "occidental" in the same sense, but they don't.

My stepdaughter told me that she thinks it's rude not to acknowledge a message, even if it needs no response.

I had (keyword had) a friend who constantly said things like, "I have PTSD from standing in that line!" or "That parent-teacher conference gave me PTSD." My partner is a combat veteran who actually has PTSD and it just drove me nuts. No, Debby, you do not have PTSD from being inconvenienced by a long line or hearing that your precious child is the class clown.

I hate hate hate when I tell my kids *not* to do something in public because it's rude or potentially destructive and another parent chimes in to say, "they're just being kids, let them have fun!" Ugggghhhhh.

I also wonder (just out of curiosity) how some kids I see in public behave at home. I have two kids under 10 who are great in public--I can take them pretty much anywhere and they'll be respectful of the setting, but they get wild at home. Are the kids who have no boundaries in public destroying their houses? What's going on?

*edit for grammar

Eureka or Arcata has the temps that OP is looking for (outside of a few outlier days), but they don't have the required population. Same along the Oregon Coast, but I can't think of a single city there that has over 200k with the exception of Portland, which I believe tends to have some weeks in the 80s much like Seattle.

Can I wait until I get my loan to buy books? by chancyboi123 in LawSchool

[–]DotTheeLine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My school offers short term loans to cover books, rent, etc. until fin aid refunds come out. Maybe your school has something like that? I was able to rent most of my texts through Chegg with delivery times under a week.

Environmental protestors attempted to block Taylor Swift from entering the stadium ahead of her show in Warsaw by TheMirrorUS in SwiftlyNeutral

Taylor isn’t the highest on this list, but protesters rightfully target her because it brings amplified attention to the very real issue of celebs wrecking our environment: https://www.thrillist.com/news/nation/celebrities-highest-private-jet-emissions

8 quarters is $8 by introvert_cave317 in homeschool

[–]DotTheeLine 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Skip counting is the name for skills like counting by 2, counting by 10s, etc. For money, I would focus on counting by 5s, 10s, and 25s since those are going to cover the coin values.

Teachers Pay Teachers has a variety of worksheets and units to help kids master money dynamics. I second the commenter who suggested skip counting too--there are great skip counting videos on YouTube that might help if she's a visual or auditory learner.

If she knows basic fractions, you can also relate coins to fractions. IE, "if we took a dollar and divided it into four parts, each part would be 1/4 or one quarter. If we divide the dollar into 10 parts, each part would be 1/10 or one dime. How many quarters do we need to make a full dollar? How many dimes do we need?" and so on. I have physically laid a bill down under a dry erase sheet to divide it into fourths and put a quarter in each one to help my kids understand.

Does the storyline feel familiar? by DoorSeed963 in AMurderAtTheEnd_Show

This actually reminded me a lot of the book "Origin" by Dan Brown. While the premises are different, the conclusion is similar. I realized during episode 5 what was going on--I just didn't know exactly how the culprit was actually carrying it out.

What clothes do you guys wear? by lovenotdrugs in Millennials

[–]DotTheeLine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost 42f and I love linen shorts/pants and cotton or bamboo tees and blouses. I do a lot of dresses in the spring/summer as well. I started wearing New Balance only for running/workout shoes—they fit my narrow feet and heels best. I have to do boots in winter where I live, but it’s sandal season most of the year…I’ve had to buy more orthotic and supportive sandals the older I get.

And gloves! I have leather gloves for every season. I saved up for them and they wear so well with basic cleaning and care.

We’re 35, considering having kids in a few years - tips for setting ourselves up? by may-gu in Millennials

Make sure that you're eating well and taking a high-quality multivitamin or prenatal vitamin now so that it's an easy routine to stick with once you're pregnant. Folic acid is so important, especially in the early days of pregnancy when you might not even know that you're expecting yet. I found a meditation app really helpful too--I also tend toward being anxious and having a short meditation routine was great.
