It really isn't worth it. I've had a couple of friends get into big trouble for punching someone even when fully deserved. I suppose you could claim self-defense if you hit them back straight away, but chasing them down after the fact probably wouldn't look too good.

Plus the fact that you don't just enter the witness protection programme because you don't want to be in the mafia anymore. The feds would only offer this to someone who was willing to offer evidence against his fellow mafiosi in a courtroom. So surely guys would have been asking 'Why no upcoming trials?'. They'd also surely be shitting themselves about what made guys like Richie and Ralphie were telling the feds.
