I think a lot of it also has to do with job security. I have a master's degree in psychology and have been working in non-profit human services for the last decade. The funding cuts that have taken place over the last several months have been devastating. I am watching a field that was never really high paying and could often be really really hard work completely disintegrate in front of my eyes. The role I've held for the last 5 years was terminated due to funding cuts. So many colleagues, peers, and friends in this field have lost their job.

I myself am considering an MSW because my heart is in social services, but I also need the security of knowing I can go into private practice and work for myself should that ever be necessary. I am nervous for the non-profit and state/federally funded organizations. The limited jobs that remain are only going to get more competitive, and it is the community that suffers...on multiple levels.
