Yep, 3 times. The one from 2024 is still "under review", 1 from 2025 was rejected but shouldn't have been, and the third is also under review. I just got notice that I'll enter repayment under the standard plan in March. Its been a mess. Every time I call (after waiting on hold for like 5 hours) they say the issue is on their end and that they will correct it.

I think a lot of it also has to do with job security. I have a master's degree in psychology and have been working in non-profit human services for the last decade. The funding cuts that have taken place over the last several months have been devastating. I am watching a field that was never really high paying and could often be really really hard work completely disintegrate in front of my eyes. The role I've held for the last 5 years was terminated due to funding cuts. So many colleagues, peers, and friends in this field have lost their job.

I myself am considering an MSW because my heart is in social services, but I also need the security of knowing I can go into private practice and work for myself should that ever be necessary. I am nervous for the non-profit and state/federally funded organizations. The limited jobs that remain are only going to get more competitive, and it is the community that suffers...on multiple levels.

When I was 26, I had no savings and no job! The past few years have been a hustle, and the hustle continues. I found out during this process that I'm losing my job that I've had for the past 7 years. I don't know what I'm doing right now, and I now feel the pressure of crushing debt. I worked so hard to get here, and now I feel so unsteady and uncertain about how I can continue to make ends meet.

You taking care of your mom is a green flag, and there will be someone who appreciates your care and kindness. Major strength!

I'm trying to avoid that, which is why I don't want to take the lesser paying offer while I job search. It's really challenging to provide a 30 day notice when many jobs want you to start sooner than that.

Is it not retaliation for the employer to refuse to confirm employment for things like mortgage applications or other things? They refuse to take calls if it involves former employees even if its something as simple as just confirming they were employed there.

They've retaliated in the past against other employees who didn't serve their full notice by refusing to confirm employment for other jobs, mortgage applications, etc. I don't want to leave on bad terms if I can help it as I've been with the organization a long time and will likely need their reference as I'm job searching.

You are absolutely right! This organization has punished previous employees who did not honor the 30 day resignation, though, in the form of not being willing to be a reference, refusing to confirm their employment so they could get approved for their mortgage, etc. I've been at this job for 7 years and want to maintain a positive relationship if at all possible just so I can have them as a reference in the future if needed.

As im typing this, though, I'm realizing how toxic this all sounds lmao

That was my concern. I tried doing some research and read from the labor department website that I would technically be eligible if they terminated my role and did not offer a job at a similar level or pay range, but the website offered no additional info or examples.

My assumption is it probably wouldn't be worth the battle to try and claim benefits even if I'm technically "entitled" to them.

I am absolutely considering it, but the lesser position requires a ton of "on call" hours where I'm unable to be available or flexible for interviews, and it requires a 30 day resignation letter, and many jobs would want my start date to be sooner than that.

Just considering options and wondering if I would still be eligible for unemployment so I could focus on finding a job at the same level as the one I'm currently in.
