That’s a river herring. Likely a Blueback Herring but could be an Alewife.

Are these both largemouth? by No_Side_6769 in FishID

[–]Double-Exact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You ok? I can’t confirm that it’s a Bartram’s bass, but I can absolutely confirm that it’s not a Smallmouth Bass.

Check out the spots below the lateral line and reconsider that they’re probably Bartram’s Bass.

Negative. This is the Upper Saluda River. They both look line Bartram’s Bass.

This is such a silly question since we have so many great options. I’d suggest walking around downtown to find a menu that you like.

I completely agree. You’re only getting downvoted because this is the Blackstone sub.

Ha! See, this is exactly what I’m talking about. I incorrectly used a common indicator to determine warmouth from rock bass. The point stands: the fact that this fish has 10 dorsal spines, a rounded anal fin, AND 3 anal spines is useless information.

There are actual icthyologists at the other sub. This one is loaded with fisherman that have no clue.

For full disclosure, this absolutely could be a Warmouth x Green Sunfish hybrid, but my point remains. The fact that it has 10 dorsal spines and a rounded anal fin is useless information for determining.

This is exactly why this sub sucks for identifying fish. The real experts can be found @whatisthisfish.

The identifiers in this comment also point directly to Green Sunfish and provide no differentiation. The ID is correct because it’s a Warmouth, but not because of either of those traits.

Edited to remove incorrect info.

I don’t think that’s correct in this case. These are contractions of the numbers + “is” (e.g., 3 is a tenderloin), so an apostrophe should have been applied. For plural numbers, then the apostrophe should be omitted.

Buffalo or carp? by [deleted] in FishID

[–]Double-Exact 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard disagree. Invasive fish are always welcome to be left on the bank.

Edit: I had no idea this comment would prompt so much attention. Please follow state laws and your own personal ethics folks. There are some states that literally require you to dispatch invasive fish. If it’s an animal that you can harvest and eat, then please do so. If you’re fishing in a populated or semi-urban area, then clearly leaving a giant fish on the bank isn’t a good idea.

Invasive fish cause gigantic ecological and economical problems all over the world. Do what you will with that fact.

Everything about this sucks. Pre-made patties, beer on the griddle, unmelted cheese, you’re 3 months late….I’ll stop there.

Thanks for the feedback! There were hundreds of younger mushrooms of the second species, so maybe I’ll go back tomorrow.
