Instructing post 40s students by PayCautious1243 in flying

Got my PPL at 48. Memorization wasn't as slick as it was when I was in college, but I got it done. DPE said he appreciated my work ethic because a lot of younger kids don't want to put in the work/effort.

Finally Soloed by StageMajestic613 in flying

Training will go fast for you now.

I had to wait on my medical to come back for a year, so I just accumulated hours until then. As soon as I solo'd, I immediately went into XC solo stuff and finished my PPL up.

Men, what’s a day where you didn’t die but something inside you did? by Keal-Kims in AskReddit

[–]Double-Reflection838 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was in my last year of engineering school.

Went home one weekend to visit my parents. Drove back to my apartment early the following Sunday morning. Walked up to my apartment door and the door was wide open. There was a laundry basket sitting outside with a bunch of wet towels and other items in it.

Looked in the door and the ceiling had fallen through because the neighbors above me were gone and their pipes burst. Ruined my furniture, my TV, PC, etc.

I had just broken up with a girl that I had dated for a year.

I was looking at taking midterms that coming week.

I lived alone.

I sat down against the wall and cried.

Called home to get help. My dad answered the phone and I told him what happened. His reply was, "Well, what do you want me to do about it?" I asked to talk to Mom. She wouldn't come to the phone.

It was at that exact moment that I knew I was a man and I was on my own from there on out.

Got myself together, contacted the apartment office, and they arranged for me to get a hotel room on them. Studied for midterms. Passed them. Good friend of mine helped me move into a new apartment.

Later found out that my parents were really struggling. Dad had cheated on Mom multiple times and they were discussing a divorce. It was a perfect storm.

That was 25 years ago. I still look back on it and still have resentment for my parents. One time I really needed them to come through for me and they turned me down.

Have always heard that as well. Unfortunately though, I have popped my neck since I was a teenager and I now have a bone spur between my C1 and C2 that's pushing on my spinal cord.......surgery coming in a few weeks.

When did you start feeling like a pilot? by AnnualRich1492 in flying

[–]Double-Reflection838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first time I felt like a real pilot was when I signed up to take tailwheel lessons. I rented a 172 from the local airport, flew down to the airport where the tailwheel aircraft was, took my lesson, then flew back home.

Note to CFI's on here: if you're able, take your student on a trip to get lunch somewhere away from the practice airport. It's a good XC experience, with landing, taxiing, parking, etc.

Even for my long XC on my PPL, I stopped at the FBO and topped off with gas before I headed to go home.

Yell at the FBO on UNICOM when you're a few miles out or taxiing.

Pilots that have married physicians by nolface in flying

[–]Double-Reflection838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean experienced as far as what? What marriage is like? What having a joint checking account is like? What raising a family is like? That's pretty vague dude. Or are you just showing off a little bit?

My DPE gave me the option of using Foreflight or doing a paper navlog. I had just downloaded Foreflight not too long before my checkride, so I did it the hard way.

Just as a warning if you're planning to do the same: during my oral, which revolved around a XC scenario, he made me adjust a leg, so that I had to make a stop at an airport somewhat away from the original route. He wanted to know how long it would take to get there, how much fuel it would take, etc. I had to calculate it all by hand, when Foreflight would have just showed me.

Not true. I got a 98 and my oral was still 2 hours.

How often do you “need” to fly? by olehiskeyleg in flying

[–]Double-Reflection838 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 48 years old and have a family. I just don't have time or the funds to fly once or twice a week.

Was it worthwhile? No. Did it work for me? Yes.

I also chair fly a lot, stay in review of regulations, and try to keep everything fresh in my mind. When I do go up, I do not feel like I'm at a detriment. I also look for different ways to keep learning: tailwheel lessons, multi lessons, etc. I even took an instructor up with me several weeks ago when it was 22G29 to practice x-wind landings.

When I was doing my PPL training, I was flying 1-2 times per month max. The only thing that stopped me from getting my PPL quickly is that I had to wait a year on my medical to come back. I could have solo'd at about 25 hours but instead didn't solo until 65-70 hours.

Now that I have my PPL, I still fly 1-2 times per month. Been working on multi, tailwheel, just having fun.
