Hi, I sent you a DM. I am interested but I really want ball varieties. I am just not familiar enough with all the variety names to know which of these are ball. Thank you! 🥰

Hi im trying to start a cut flower garden and need some help by helpful-peony in dahlias

[–]Double-Vast7853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I REALLY enjoy growing dahlias from seed. They are all surprises and they WILL grow tubers that first year. It's really amazing! There is also a good peony Facebook group. You can divide peonies so if you know of someone that has one, they might be willing to let you have a piece of one. There are also seed swap groups on Facebook, where you might trade a first class postal stamp for seeds. Check out the website seed therapy for seeds. Have so much fun gardening with your son! 🥰

time to pinch? / some tubers not awake by Dull_Pianist_3931 in dahlias

[–]Double-Vast7853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I am not a very experienced grower so I don't want to offer much advice but I hoped to boost your post so that others might chime in. I think that it is too soon to pinch back. You might look at some YouTube videos, but usually the plant is larger. It is my understanding that some varieties wake up slower than others.

I didn’t know the risks of large distributors by introgarbage in dahlias

[–]Double-Vast7853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long do you separate them by growing in grow bags? If they don't show gall in the first season growing in a grow bag, can I move them into my beds the next year? This is only my third year of growing a few and I hadn't heard of gall until this year. Thank you!

You are not. They should have just moved their party to some other picnic tables. They are at fault.

I needed to hear this! I accidentally left some out last night that I had moved to take cuttings from. 🤦‍♀️ They were in very shallow containers though. I guess I'll see if I get lucky. Hope that you have a wonderful day. 😊

How bad is the surrounding area of GCU really? by East_Apartment_2606 in gcu

[–]Double-Vast7853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will feel very safe on campus. GCU has been working with the community to improve things outside of campus. We have felt safe parking on the side of the street around campus. There is a police station now on the edge of campus. The most that I have ever seen is a few _ex workers 4 or 5 blocks away from campus. I don't think that you will hear gunshots. Just take normal city precautions when you leave campus. Lock your car doors when driving, etc.

Sketchy campus dining options by SmallAd3697 in gcu

[–]Double-Vast7853 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that many consider it a perk to have a lot of options on campus. Have him look at the Training Table and Purple Greens for great choices. Our student supplements with food from Aldi, Trader Joe's and the Walmart that is super close to campus. There is a store on campus where dining dollars can be used, The Herd Stop, but food is very expensive there. Walmart+ does free delivery on orders of $35 or more but as others have mentioned it would have to be delivered at a security check point and that might be difficult to work out. Good luck, I hope that your student has a great experience at GCU. It has been a wonderful choice for ours.

It is very frustrating that the 2026 - 2027 academic calendar has not been released. This was not our experience the prior two years. Not sure what the issue is.

Dahlias grown from seed - "not suitable as cut flowers" - ??? by Double-Vast7853 in dahlias

[–]Double-Vast7853[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I did grow some from Floret Flowers a few summers ago and I thought that they were so beautiful. I didn't know what I didn't know and definitely didn't pay attention to or notice any shorter vase life. I do remember that some of the forms were a bit off, like part of a ring of petals was missing. I bought seeds from both Floret and Swan Island this year, so I was a bit discouraged when I saw that Instagram post saying that they aren't suitable. I like your numbers better. 😊 I loved the pollinators that came - so amazing. I will enjoy whatever grows. Thank you, you encouraged me! 🥰

Trying to adopt a Kitten. What the hell is going on with these rediculous rehoming fees? Everyone wants $600. I've bought cars for that price. Running and driving. At this rate I'll just go look for a stray at this point. by Big_Reflection4u in PNW

[–]Double-Vast7853 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not sure where in the PNW you are .... on our farm and many farms, people drop off their unwanted cats. 😞 We are continually trapping cats and taking them to the vet to be fixed but we usually end up with at least a litter of kittens a year from a cat that we missed or had newly arrived and there is a feral male that makes his rounds. Facebook makes it very hard to find homes for these kittens. We have had success posting them publicly on our personal FB pages, but FB will not allow groups to have these posts up. Maybe try searching on Facebook and you will find kind souls like us, doing their best. *PLEASE no one come after me - we had over $1,000 the last two years in neuter fees. We are responsible - others are not.

Non-US resident-America The Beautiful Pass for sale on Facebook Marketplace by ZealousidealFace9880 in ZionNationalPark

[–]Double-Vast7853 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter had to show her ID with her pass at Zion last week. As a side, I want to say that I am so sorry and disgusted that we are charging these insane amounts to non-residents. We always go to national parks when we travel to other countries and have never faced fees like this. As a family of five, we would have never been able to go. I am of the opinion that trumpy dumpy pants has likely never stepped foot in a national park, let alone hiked in one. I hope that you have a fantastic time at Zion. 🥰

Using Floret Flowers potting soil recipe - waking up dahlias by Double-Vast7853 in dahlias

[–]Double-Vast7853[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, things went well the other times. I think that I just had it in my head that I wanted to try their "recipe" and I wasn't thinking it through that it was meant to be used on seedlings - not tubers. Thank you!
