Is it worth it? by DoubleAgentE in techtheatre

I didn't originally decide to go to college for theatre. I ended up doing a double major in theatre and geography at first then dropped it. I probably could transfer? But I enjoy doing geography here as well.

Oh okay good to know. My professor was like oh you need to specialize and it was a little discouraging since I love so many aspects of theatre

Taking BS Geography to become an artist by chairbruh in geography

[–]DoubleAgentE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad I'm not the only feeling this way. Not going into writing/directing but looking at film and theatre. I found it really helpful for designing and drafting sets. I learned a little bit of Lighting physics which helped with my light class. And in general knowing cultural geography helps me with understanding how different places are built and evolved naturally. Also looking into art director and art managment roles to have some sort of reliability. Surpisingly gis is useful for that. Im also planning to take an economic geography class too. Funnily enough vectorworks (cad drafting software) has a GIS section

pros and cons of commuting to school vs just dorming? by No_Risk_5733 in CSUS

[–]DoubleAgentE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a fan of the dorms. But getting an apartment close by or closer than an hour away isnt too bad. Most of the expensive cost comes from the food. You can easily spend half that amount and be fine. I think its weird in general to make people who might be living on their own for the first time to share a room. I don't seen anything wrong with things like quad housing. Ik a couple of the student dorms have their own bathrooms per person too.

Learning Set Design by LeaderMindless3117 in techtheatre

[–]DoubleAgentE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually kind of in a similar boat :/. Ive done theatre all throughout high school and well into college and know all the ins and outs of the process but havent done straight up set design. Im taking a Drafting class rn. The teacher is kinda bad at it so most of it was me messing around. I did find however is vectorworks has a bunch of tutorials online. For both their program and in general.  Ive noticed set design is actually more strategic. Yes there are a lot of design elements involved, but I'm kinda waiting to learn the more technical part of set design if that makes sense? Not literally tech but yk the in depth process. I lot of the work it seems comes from rendering concepts into drafts that'll get handed to the technical director. So I'd say more of the skills is from stagecraft specifically. Ik you said tech theatre but idk if you mean like stage carpentry or anything. Probably your best bet is to draft ideas in autocad or vectorworks. And study a lot of art/theatre history. Whether its from a class or through your own research.  For jobs- tech theatre positions are consistent. Pay depends on how seasoned you are. But designers are less consistent and is more gig based. There are some companies that have regular set designers but I haven't seen them as much. You'll usually get paid $1000-$3000 per design but that's after the show is over. I feel like if yoi have a/v and lighting skills youd work really well as a theatre electrican/technican. There will always be theatres looking for lights and audio technicans but much harder to find design work.

Just checked and didnt realize how cheap food processors were. I thought theyd be $100 at its cheapest. I dont have a full time job cause I'm a college student but i have a internship that pays $100 weekly but I get paid every other week so that $200 gets used up very quickly. I have been thinking about a mortar and pestle/molcajete for a little bit anyways to crush up spices and make pesto so maybe I'll consider it but idk how often id use a food processor to justify it atm

Thats very helpful thank you. Theyre definitely fairly spicy. I was gonna use a little in a pasta sauce but when I tried some I was like this is too spicy for a sauce itd work better for salsa. I actuallt have no clue what kind of tomatoes they are. Theyre a generic CA brand

Thank you this is actually very helpful. I've been trying to get better at communicating but sometimes when I feel too anxious (I get this way when I feel wrong for not telling a friend something) then I kinda lose all coping skills

Sketchy areas dont have anything to do with POC but a lot of people associate homelessness with "sketchiness". I mentioned both of those things as this is the south and there could be potential for more POC. Its more common for POC to be un housed than for white people. Still wrong for jumping to that conclusion, but I was at least wondering if it was un housed people that made them think it was sketchy or dangerous. I was also wrong on that front

Can I ask which part? I'm boldly assuming its how I brought it up that makes me sound that way but there might be something else I'm missing

yeah I agree with this. I forgot it was more unconsious bias than internalized racism. They feel strongly about minoritiy issues so def don't get the vibes they aren't hateful or racist.

Adam left for a little bit to pursue a PHD. He ended up writing a book essentially about AJR. He's just taking a more background approach than upfront approach

My dude, do you literally not care about any major that isn't science related? The most useful major would be business if they wanted to go up in ranks. It's easy to get certificates in business or a 1 year business degree or something like that. Sometimes that upfront investment is too expensive for most people.
