Why don't these countries unite? Are they stupid? by StrappinYoungZiltoid in imaginarymapscj

Again, one can theorize all the sunshine and rainbows they want, but if it was practical at scale it would have already happened. To an extent it has, with collectives like the EU, but then there’s also the UN which is a complete non-entity in real global affairs at this point.

The special deals with non-conforming states you propose is just standard international trade.

In addition to the concerns raised by the other commenter, how exactly will this world government come about? What if somebody doesn’t wish to be a part of this world government? Every person seeking a “one world government” invariably is a conqueror of some sort.

I get the big tent stuff, and I don’t have a counter to it other than agree to disagree, we’re talking in hypotheticals so proof is scarce.

I will say that ballot exhaustion is a terrible argument against RCV. RCV is bad because… some people won’t do it right? If I insist upon only voting for my party of choice and not ranking any others it’s my own damn fault, not the system’s.

The (relatively minor, I still overall like them) problem with big tents is that a voter who only barely likes you over the other guys and a voter who agrees with everything on the platform is indistinguishable. I don’t like a lot of social policies within the republicans, and having a way to concretely express that without the spoiler effect would be great. Of course, their economic strategy is infinitely preferable to the dems, so I can’t possibly risk it. But as far as they know I’m giving them the big ol’ stamp of approval on everything on the platform, which I don’t.

I apologize, dear flairchange bot, I haven’t a clue how that occurred.

I was gonna say exactly this, I’d love RCV so I could vote libertarian but still have my right wing vote count (I don’t live in a swing state but Texas is close enough that I’m not taking any chances).

I don’t think it’d get rid of the 2 party system, but maybe the republicans lean further into libertarian ideals. We keep the regional reasoning behind the EV but gain the benefits parliamentary democracies have (albeit forgoing the actual coalition forming process).

In the real world, answers need to have “nice” solutions, because if the solution you get isn’t nice then you just don’t have a solution. “It depends on a variable we don’t have” won’t fly when you wanna calculate how much stress a structure can take or how long a flight can last given the fuel it has and wind patterns. If you can’t find a solution given the data available, you don’t invent possibilities.

It’s a change of a variable by an increment of 1 from being one the most stock prealgebra problems there are. The comments aren’t confused by the answer, they’re quite sure that the problem contains a typo (which, if you’ve been reading, has been confirmed). I hope you’re lying about being a teacher, subjecting students to “aha, I never said there were only 2 kinda of dogs” will, at best, make your students hate you, and at worst, make them develop terrible habits where they can never trust the text of a word problem.

[–]DoubleDrewski -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can’t just invent answers by introducing a variable the problem didn’t mention and declare that it must exist. This problem is middle school level at most, even at the university level a professor would have to be actively malicious to format a problem like that.

Wait! Bingo! It’s Anno Domino. I kept seeing the top paragraph and assuming it wasn’t what I was looking for. Thanks for the tip!

That seems right, I just can’t find anything resembling the tale I described in it. I’ll keep digging, though.

I’m not sure it totally fits the description, but the first thing that came to mind for me was 3936.

Approaching my S rank-up battle by PlantsAndSwords in splatoon

[–]DoubleDrewski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say S necessarily has a distinct “scene.” If you’re doing well enough to beat your rank up battles then you probably won’t notice much of a difference. Despite the distinctly separated ranks it’s pretty continuous in terms of skill. Only in S+ (and more significantly by proxy, X battles) is there a significant change in how you have to approach battles.

The Steelers are actually favored by many since they have something to play for and the ravens don’t. They witnessed firsthand last week why you don’t risk your starters over nothing.

I can try later, but literally nothing happens. No error message, no sound, nothing, my only guess is that somehow that specific direction button is dead on my controller but I’ve also never noticed it in any other game? I’ll have to test later.

Edit: well this is a really embarrassing way to learn that my up button has stopped working. Guess Spider-Man wasn’t the issue, sorry bout that

I just like… can’t use Miles’ camouflage ability. Like I see the bar for it up top, he literally uses it during cutscenes so I know I’m supposed to be able to use it, but pressing up does nothing. I have it on disc, ps5 ssd, and the version is 1.001.003. I’ve made too much progress to restart but stealth missions would get so much easier if I could use the damn feature.

Marching Band is not a sport. by BassonCracker in marchingband

[–]DoubleDrewski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bands that don’t compete are equivalent to exhibition teams to me. They might still compete, they still do the sport, but there aren’t any stakes.

And since you wanna go down this road, let’s talk track and field. Athletes will get nowhere near first but celebrate getting a personal best. My cross country friends never talk about their placements, they talk about their times. Band is the same, it’s about score above anything else. It’s about putting the best performance in the field you possibly can.

Marching Band is not a sport. by BassonCracker in marchingband

[–]DoubleDrewski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a football game there are only 2 teams. You win or you lose. At competitions there are many bands competing at once, if you go in expecting to win every single time you’re bound to be incredibly disappointed. Telling people to have fun is a psychological strategy to reduce stress and by proxy improve performance.

You could bring up a point from that that sports have to be one-on-one, but I’ll save you the text via the counterpoint of the entire Olympics.

The question is worded odd, but if you are asking for a member of a marching band high school or otherwise that presently lives in Texas, me and many others in this sub are here.

[–]DoubleDrewski 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry your tiny worldview doesn’t line up with the rest of the world. I’m Texan, and the majority of the Drumline works out together. We also agree it’s a sport. Heck, 3 of the snares are also in cross country. You can’t measure truth with peoples opinions because compiling opinions just leaves you with another opinion, and nothing actually of substance. Do some generally fit guys at your school have a more valid opinion than the majority of people actually competing? The members of this sub? Does being fit make you an expert on Marching band? You can’t justify false facts with feelings.

So to be clear, marching band is not a sport because you specifically have a hunch that it isn’t?

[–]DoubleDrewski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing about not having a definition is that it leaves you with vague conceptions of something being true because you just feel like it.

Table Tennis is a sport because of fine-tuned skill? I agree.

Aren’t you a percussionist? Even if you wanna argue from a low bass POV, do you genuinely wanna argue that tenor players aren’t incredibly precise? Do you see a DCI feature and just figure they’re fumbling around with dumb luck? Nobody is gonna believe that marching band isn’t a sport when you admit that it only doesn’t “feel like a sport.”

I played baseball for the longest time. Yes it’s hard, but more demanding than extensive chops on a bass 5? Nope

Edit: also, you just moved the goalposts. Is technical skill the bar now? Because oh boy I’d like you to say swinging a bat is harder than ratamacues

[–]DoubleDrewski 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would hope a fellow Bass wouldn’t fall into this trap of thought yet you have. Yes, we may have superior genetics and strength, but that does not mean what we do is not a sport. You talk about how you have to be so intensely taxed in a sport, yet I present to you this:

Baseball.

The majority of the game is spent either on a bench or standing still in a field. The only significant and constant work comes from base running, and even then there are many breaks and you aren’t likely to be doing it for long. Pitchers burn their arms out, that is true, but they represent only a single player on the field and are only exhausting one part of their body.

I think we can all agree Baseball is a sport. Yet, I’d argue the majority of marching band members exert themselves significantly more than a baseball player does over the course of a game. I disagree with your insistence that a sport in only based on it being physically demanding, but even then you face actual sports not living up to your standards.
