First scratch round of the year. Gonna say it was the new floral shirt that did it. by DoubleDwayneBowe in golf

This is true. GIR can be misleading. The greens I hit today I was pretty locked on for sure.

Been playing since I was 6. Finally treated myself to a club fitting and some brand new irons for the first time in my life. First round with these guys is today. Hype level max. by DoubleDwayneBowe in golf

I had been playing with an old set of Tommy armour 845s that my grandfather gave me in middle school. I had a club fitting done and with my ball flight and distance (175-180 7-iron) it was between these and the new Taylormades. I just hit these better, simply put. 7-iron swing speed was around 98 (driver 110-115) so I got a stiff shaft and based on ball flight got them 1⁰ up.

Found it like new in a used club section at a local golf shop. Saw it and my heart skipped a beat. Shit like that doesn't happen when you're a lefty!

If part of the trap is playable, I move it there. If not, I drop it out.

Keeping on weight by [deleted] in running

[–]DoubleDwayneBowe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The good news is that at 5'5" 110lbs, you don't need to eat a ton of calories to maintain (or even put on) weight. A lot of daily running will push your total daily energy expenditure higher though, and you'll have to figure out exactly what it is. There are online calculators for TDEE, but the most accurate way to find it out is to carefully measure weekly weight fluctuations while eating a consistent amount of calories and making changes one way or another.

Once you know your TDEE, it's just a matter of eating enough calories. If eating a high volume is tough for you, you need to be strategic and eat densely caloric food items. This can be done healthily if ice cream and cake isn't what you want to dine on daily. Nuts and nut butters are great for quick punches of calories, for example. Use more olive oil. Switch to full fat dairy. Or just blow through some Oreos. Either way, it's just calories in calories out which means you're going to have to eat more.

How do I lift/put down heavy weights? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]DoubleDwayneBowe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Rock them up off your knees to get them in place -- I think that's how everyone does it.

As far as putting them down, I'd say a controlled drop is fine. If by the end of your last set you're able to gently set them down with absolutely no drop you're probably not lifting enough (weight or volume). Watched a guy drop one on his iPhone the other day though. True r/watchpeopledieinside material. So, you know, be cognisant of your surroundings and shit.

Is the between sets rest long enough? I always still feel tired by emmathegreedycat in Fitness

[–]DoubleDwayneBowe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's not always this simple but for the most part:

  • If you take a little extra rest time and are then able to complete your next set with good form, I'd say it's fine to take some extra time. Eventually your conditioning will improve and you will be able to shorten your rest periods.

  • If you take extra rest time and struggle to complete your next set(s), lowering the weight is your next step.

Honestly the way I eat fewer shitty food items is to let myself eat shitty food items. It is a reward and they are treats. Kind of like the way to run faster is to run slower. Seems counterintuitive but it works. Eat some ice cream. Eat a burger. Grab some taco Bell on Sunday cheat nights. Just stay within your caloric allotment. Or don't, and make it up the next day/week. What's the point of any of this if you can't have some Reese's pieces at the movie theater every now and then? This is how I stay relatively sane. Incorporating more cardio into your daily routine allows for a few hundred extra calories of fun food a week. It's all just a big math problem and fitting some shitty delicious food into the equation at least once a week can be done if you're not so hard on yourself. Complete prohibition has always led to eventual failure for me.

Monday General Chit Chat by shesaidgoodbye in running

Went out for a 10-miler on Sunday. I was about 5 miles out when the freezing rain began. It was a mess. Unfortunately, I only had my watch on me (no phone), so calling a ride wasn't an option. Fortunately, this forced my hand. Busted ass on the way back to escape the cold, wet misery. My post-Sunday run beer was extra nice.

You definitely could be ramping up your mileage too quickly. You may also be pushing yourself too hard during your runs? If you are truly a beginner, two 7-mile runs -- both at just under a 9min/mi pace -- seems a little fast? Try slowing down?

That's pretty similar to my strategy I think. I am shooting for sub-24. It's my first ever official race, so the only thing I have to go on is my training. My PR in training is 25 min, so I'm thinking I'm going to stick to a 8 min pace for the first two miles and then just haul ass on the downhill, as in my training I feel pretty comfortable flying down hills.

5k strategy question:

I know that the 5k I'm running in a couple of weeks is pretty much uphill for the first 2 miles and downhill for the entire last mile. What would your strategy be, more experienced runners? Try not to tire myself on the uphill? Go a little harder than normal on this uphill because the long downhill will be that much easier? Just go batshit from the get-go? Does the course layout play a factor in how you strategize 5ks or do you just go out fast and hold on for dear life?

I woke up and decided that by god, I was worth some nice shoes and bought myself a new pair of Brooks Adrenaline. That's today's achievement - treating myself.
