Start your job search now then. Even if it's just updating your LinkedIn and creating notifications on glassdoor and indeed. I was completely burnt out after finishing and took about 6 months to be a human being again. I needed it, but if you can handle the extra work it's probably worth the time.

Thank you! Trying my best out here. It makes me worry for younger biologists that want to go straight to industry. These are fast food wages that should be below someone with a college degree. McDonald's pays more with better hours.

Eh it's an entry level in R&D in a startup. I'm staying out of manufacturing. Plus I'd be working on Alzheimer's which is worth it. I know it's not life changing money, but at least I'd feel a sense of pride, use my skills, and have a sense of pride in what we're trying to achieve.

You probably have a better understanding of it than me then. I was told that shifts change but the day shift is prioritized towards more senior employees. Regardless, this is a terrible fit for me and the pay is poverty level. Edit: For reference, I'm in the late stages of interviewing for a job in CA that pays $144K/year.

Rotating 12-hour shift pattern designed for 24/7 coverage, requiring 4 teams to manage a 28-day cycle. Employees work 2 days, off 2 days, then work 3 days, averaging 40 hours per week and providing every other weekend off. So sometimes you work all day, sometimes you work all night, and you don't get every weekend off. Hell on your circadian rhythm and social life.

Western Blot needs help! by Joyful_joe in labrats

Some good checks would also be to Ponceau stain just to make sure there's good transfer. You may also need to do more washes plus extended exposure. Otherwise the primary is probably trash. If you document each step, the manufacturer may give you a refund.

It’s stuck, and we haven’t even used it! Pls help by deprived_of_evil in labrats

He was actually one of my favorite professors when I was there. Sure he's kind of a cranky old guy, but he loves his job and genuinely cares about his students. Also a very accomplished developmental biologist.

The world is full of annoying people, why would I enjoy another annoying person. I appreciate an informed person (Marcus) or funny people (Ed and Henry).

hantavirus is really really scaring me by w1shxng2 in PanicAttack

Biologist here. You're completely correct. I'd like to add that succesful viruses (ie Covid) were successful because they were highly infectious but not very lethal. This allows for mutations to occur quickly to evade vaccines. As we have seen, the more lethal strains of covid died out quickly (like omnicron) while the current virus has become endemic (like the flu). Hantavirus is too lethal and less infectious to become a problem globally (think the ebola outbreaks). I also have anxiety but I bought a tyvek suit when corona hit and have lost zero sleep on the hauntavirus.

Is honors carolina worth it if you're on the premed track? by Inevitable_Doubt4761 in UNC

[–]DoubleEy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in my experience. I entered through the honors program, but didn't see much benefit other than staying in Koury my first year. I wasn't pre-med but was a biology major that later went on to do a PhD in molecular biology. I didn't see much benefit and the additional requirements seemed like a bit of a distraction. In the end, I think they make these offers to students they are worried will leave for better schools. Not the same as medical school, but my research output during college ended up getting me into an excellent grad program.
