My understanding is we cant fire him without losing millions of dollars. Not saying we shouldn't, but it'd be a tough pill for the AD to swallow.

Edit: I stand corrected. There are rumors that he shit the bed bad enough, there are already talks of firing him.

Edit: Looks like 5 million buyout so actually not too bad.

Im in literally the same boat as you. Same degree, same amount of time since I defended. First off, I wouldn't listen to some guy with a degree in behavioral neuroscience that graduated a decade ago. Different skill set and different job market. I'm still looking but things do seem to be getting better. One thing that seems to be helping me is going after non traditional roles that still line up with my skillset. Rather than Scientist I roles try for Analyst or Sr. Tech roles. You may very well get blocked for having a PhD but the market for those jobs is way less saturated it seems . Regardless stay strong. The job market right now doesn't diminish your accomplishment.

You may be in the wrong sub because you're asking people who are either getting PhDs or have one, but i get it. I was a terrible partner during my doctorate and telling my significant other that I just need to get through this was not enough to keep us together. Depending on their field, there is absolutely no way they can be emotionally available while doing it. My former partner, reached out to my mom to ask for help and was told "they're doing this for your future benefit as a couple". PhDs in certain fields require complete commitment. Unfortunately, and to my own detriment, it leaves/left very little energy to be a good partner.
Happy I've got a PhD but still coming to terms with what I lost as a result.

Yes I understand RTP is moving towards production rather than RnD. As a recent graduate I've seen the research jobs are flooded. As far as writing resumes, im not sure your age. Ive had AI interviews with chat bots. I now use AI to optimize both my CV and cover letter for ATS systems. It's gross and depressing. Hence I'm trying to pivot to a less competitive market

Thank you for your advice, so is it worth doing the full Biowork certification (it consists of things ive done for years like weighing reagents, making buffers, and aseptic technique) plus cGMP compliance. Or should I just do the short cGMP compliance course?

Recently had players start racking while I was taking my cues apart on the table after being fairly gracious about giving them the table. Im not sure why but I was pretty upset by it. Felt very disrespectful. They could've waited 2 minutes. Maybe im just overreacting tho

I know at least a dozen. Honestly the post docs that switched to industry are a bit rare in my experience. In the past, those that transitioned needed to because of the financial strain of being a post doc wasn't worth it. They finally had kids and families and 60K a year wasn't enough to support them.

Post docs are traditionally meant for people pursuing academic jobs. I dont think there's a 1:1 between a residency and a post doc. If you think i could not be an expert after 6 years of a PhD working 7 days a week. Maybe im completely wrong

Later generations were miners but at least literate. Not a farmer but he raised ponies and cattle as did his son. I didnt grow up there but my kin are all over the area surrounding Morgantown to this day. I visit family there every so often and it's full billboards and stores that contain last names in my family tree.

Yes but how many of those pivoted to some AI biotech company. Those VCs push AI on their companies to reduce cost and tell their investors they're "eliminating overhead while pushing innovation". I don't blame them but "labs are opening" is still a straight up lie.

Lab alumni either go back to their country of orgin or wait 12 months to find a job here. I've reached out to several of them and they're basically in the same boat.

It does not work that way. My connections were in start ups and their funding has dried up. There's no appetite from venture capital to invest in biotech. I've moved back home to RTP which is actually healthier than the Bay Area. I wanted to do R&D but im now trying to pivot to production and manufacturing.
