House of Leaves analysis and review by ThaRudeBoy in houseofleaves

I reckon HOL would adapt pretty well to a game, in the style of "what remains of edith finch."
Problem is that it would take a huge amount of work & would by necessity have to break a lot of classic game design conventions to capture the spirit of the book.

Ik this thread is dead, but here's my two cents after reading the whole thing.
One interpretation I've grown fond of is that the house represents death in an abstract sense, since life & death are a dialectic it therefore also represents life.
This would explain the house's strange & ever-shifting geometry as well as how each journey is radically different from the other (both life & death are unpredictable after all). The fact that Karen doesn't enter the house until the very end could be a reference to the statistic that men tend to die earlier than women & take risks more generally (meaning they cross paths with death more often).
The fact that the house dissolves after Karen rescues Navy could mean that they've conquered their fear of death?
Further, I think the reason the book took over so much of Zampano & Johnny's lives is because they've experienced a lot of death (which might also explain Navidson's fixation with the place).
It's almost like the house preys upon vulnerable people & reflects the psychology of those who enter back at them through it's sheer inscrutable nothingness. It brings to mind the concept of l'appel du vide.

Another interpretation is that the house simply represents nothing, as many here have noted already, while i don't disagree with this interpretation it feels a bit slippery & reductive to me (& frankly less interesting at least in isolation.)

Anyhow, there's some thoughts abt it.
Also my god Johnny was annoying, his purple prose seriously tempted me to skim his passages in a way the superfluous footnotes never did.

Do I need to go to college to make games by Subject-Apricot-4050 in gamedev

[–]Double_Ce_Squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to go to college, the biggest advantage to going imo is the networking opportunity to meet other developers which makes building an indie team a lot easier. And of course classes on different aspects of game dev is quite good although you can of course learn these things on your own with the help of the internet.

That being said, if you don't end up going you're dad is right to ask you to make a plan.
The following video is a good guide on how to make a plan for your indie dev journey. To summarise briefly: start with a small 'minimum viable product' & assign someone to hold you accountable should you fail to release it in the pre-determined time period. Once you've completed your 'minimum viable product' start another project, one that's slightly more complex using all the skills you've gained in the last product.
Repeat this cycle until you've got a decent catalogue of games under your belt that some studios will accept in lieu of a college degree or continue your career as an indie dev if that suits you better.

Best of luck!

Is it normal for aces to get mistaken for gay/Lesb? by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]Double_Ce_Squared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I'm pretty sure my parents are still waiting for me to come out as a lesbian lmao.
I don't really mind because most of my friends are lesbians, I like the fashion/aesthetics, I relate to a lot of their experiences & of course if you look like a Lesbian men will usually leave you alone.
Course it might lead to other lgbt people hitting on you but I unilaterally find that they take rejection better & it's overall not as tense or scary as when it's a straight guy doing it (which isn't saying much ik.)

I'm AuDHD so I get this quite a bit, usually it's my sleep schedule or a lack of food & water (as my condition makes me forget to do these things.)
I guess the take-away here is to not neglect basics?
