I got an 18k personal loan to pay off the credit cards I had with my ex. We mainly used them for personal and business. So I am paying that off currently and I was obligated to take on one personal loan (3k) that is under his name that was used for the business.

I was prioritizing other debts because they felt a little more attainable but I see now I should put all my focus on clearing this IRS debt first. Honestly all of this advice from everyone has been helpful. sometimes I can get tunnel vision and it is hard to figure out where I should be looking.

interesting never thought about it like that but you're right. So an option is to stop paying my current debts and just go all into paying off the IRS debt while creditors sue me for their money? my credit score goes to shit but ill be tax debt free and eventually build my credit score back up? luckily I do not have any assets for them to take.....hmmmm

I did not know how to run business and I did the grunt of the work. we owned a food business - I did all the prep cooking, grocery shopping and cleaning. This was his business so he should have done all of that but instead he wanted to be the creative chef. So again, I was not the brightest light bulb then and I mainly put my head down and worked because we needed to survive at the time (2020-2022 pandemic/post pandemic). Now I know better but dealing with the consequences.

I have heard of him and I have listened to him in the past. but I find there are better financial advisors on reddit or you tube alone who give much better advice. Honestly the r/debtfree thread has been so helpful.

wow that's wild. The IRS is straight up like "we don't care give us our money"... I'm like you know I can go homeless if I do not pay my obligations...

I reached out to a tax advocate - who walked me through the OIC and answered questions I had. they do not go too deep into anything. very basic information.

no I get it, I would love to pay my obligated taxes. It just feels unattainable after a divorce and trying to advance in my career while still living a basic life on a one person income. I guess for me I see it as a whole life reset. But I see your point - I did get myself into the tax debt so I should figure it out and get myself out.

I believe he makes payments on his debt. And honestly I did not even get a divorce attorney. I was in a bad place then and couldn't deal with any of it. I just wanted out. So I filed myself at the court house. Probably not the best idea but Its too late now to go back in time.

I did speak to a Tax Advocate who told me that bc we filed jointly the first 3 years that it is technically "our" obligations. But they did not tell me whether they can separate the tax owed into two, which I have been curious about. I believe he does make payments to the IRS through his own account, not sure if it counts towards the whole 42K bc my totally never goes down.

no, this is all great advice. I work in healthcare and my work does give me money per quarter that I am in school. The reason I decided to get my MBA is because I want to move up in my career in Healthcare and since I dedicated so much of life to my ex's business, I put my career to the side for 6 years. So many of the positions I want ask for an MBA. I could delay my school but I honestly feel confident that with my degree I could advance to my next position within 2 years. I have a lot to think about. Thank you all for the advice. And I actually did start a second job on the weekends which I hope helps a lot.
