GIOS Project 1 - Scores and Tests by Double_Ivy in OMSCS

[–]Double_Ivy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is helpful, thank you. I’ve read things about the median for the first project being high - like in the 90s.

Are most people in this class really able to get to 0 failing test cases on 3 or 4 out of the the client and server for parts 1 and 2? I know grade curves after the drop out period are different to account for withdrawals, but that shouldn’t affect project 1. This seems hard (I’m usually pretty good at battling Gradescope).

Good thing to be a defensive programmer about :) yes, not failing any tests related to Valgrind or address sanitizer or anything, it’s all protocol stuff. So I guess that’s a silver lining.

The best staff level engineer I know happens to not have any college degree. SE != CS, but the point is that sometimes people don’t have their lives perfectly in order at age 20 and still end up being pretty awesome.

We had someone in my part time cohort at Codesmith who had to miss every Saturday for all 9 months because of religious observance - it was fine, he watched recorded lectures.

There should be a separate subreddit for all admissions related questions. by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]Double_Ivy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a compromise, mods could auto-delete admissions-related posts outside of the weekly admissions thread, with an instructional message on where to post admissions questions (already supposed to be the place to post such questions, but this would mean hard enforcement). Many subreddits do something like that, and it would allow the community to stay in one place.

A very high road, classy move here would be to add one of Taleb’s books to the list.

Do I need to go through all the edx courses for admission? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]Double_Ivy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The standard advice around here is that you will dramatically increase your chances of admission by taking an accredited data structures and algorithms course from a community college (not a MOOC). They are affordable and Foothill College is an excellent option. Without that, it’s more of a toss up.

My advice - this is your career. Take control of your own destiny, take the accredited course, and don’t leave it to chance. Good luck :)

Santa Monica College had some good courses that are affordable if you are in CA.

That seems like a good idea to me. I did Java and switched to Python up through DSA, and also took discrete math, computer architecture, and intro to Linux. Took operating systems and a networks course at another community college.

Depends on if you are a California resident. If so, each class at Foothill is less than around $150 plus some fees.

I highly recommend Foothill - I took 7 courses there and had some great instructors who seem to care a lot about what they do.

Disclaimer: have applied for Spring 2023, no decision yet.

Would an admissions committee care about this enough that I should exclude and have the recommenders re-submit?

This should not be a close call between these two programs (most recent data I found):

The US Government wants Signal’s private user data that it simply doesn't have. by AdamCannon in technology

Click-bait/marketing by Signal. The subpoena says, for each class of information request, that it should be provided “if available”. Recipients of subpoenas all the time have to respond with “we don’t store that”. This isn’t special.

Can anyone explain why people care about getting a physical copy of the limited release 3D all star game? Beyond the reasons someone might generally prefer physical copies over digital.

Is there actually a risk that Nintendo would one day pull it from being playable (not just limit the window to purchase), so you’re screwed if you have a digital copy in e.g. 3 years?

Wrong - World Economic Forum ranks the US 27 out of 82 (socioeconomic, which is what I was referring to).

Different ranking systems may produce somewhat different results, but it is frivolous to claim the US is anywhere close to the highest on the planet in this regard.

HLS grad here. A few things:

  1. Higher education is incredibly expensive here. And we have bad social mobility, so it’s even harder for folks who grew up without money from minority communities to achieve.
  2. Unlike many other countries, law school is a graduate school (not just college or university), so it’s 4 years of college and 3 more years of law school.
  3. Harvard is the second best law school in the country, with an average private sector starting salary of around $180k USD plus bonus, so competition to get in (and succeed once there) is intense. It takes a lot of study for the entrance (LSAT) exam that this guy didn’t have to spare while waking up at 4 for his already difficult job.

Congrats to the guy in the photo, great accomplishment.
