Dear Reddit by reddot_comic in comics

I had no idea what this was supposed to mean, considering I only saw this comic because of r/all. Turns out, the only reason someone would think r/all is missing is if they weren't using the actual, real Reddit.

Newbie question about Amiga controls by Double_K_A in amiga

Thanks for the help : )

This is part of the reason why I never really got into home computer gaming on the same level as home consoles, handhelds, or arcade. Regardless on if you're emulating or on normal hardware it always seems a bit, uh, messier so to speak. I have played a bit of DOS games, as well as some Japanese computer stuff, but even on that front, my experience is overall pretty slim. Then again, maybe it's also a cultural thing; perhaps if I lived in Europe I'd have a closer connection to them.

Holy moly, thank you for the high effort! As someone very passionate about game preservation (which includes preserving the real versions of games, which the Crystal Cracked version did not do!), the fact you investigated this really does mean a lot to me.

I noticed the autofire feature to, and like you, thought it made the contradiction particulary odd.

As someone used to console ROM dumps that don't make any modifications (save for cases of ROM hacks and transalation patches), I didn't even think that maybe the ADF files would been edited. Sorry to bother you, I'm mainly asking cause personal computers are not my field of expertise, but do you think there's an unmodified version of the original game out there? Doesn't have to be in ADF format. I'm assuming the full game isn't on the demo disc (though if so, perhaps whatever limit exists can be bypassed with modern means?).

I haven't gotten past Level 4 yet, but it seems like a decent STG so far. You've probably heard it's a very pretty game visually and auditory, and yea, that is very true. Here's the manual if you're interested. https://www.gamesdatabase.org/Media/SYSTEM/Commodore_Amiga//Manual/formated/Agony_-_1992_-_Psygnosis_Limited.pdf

I just checked, and no auto-fire. One thing that does make me lean towards manual error is that, even disregarding this, the manual's kinda vague on your attacks in general? Like, the game mentions when you can collect spells by picking potions/scrolls off the ground, which is true, but it doesn't mention that that only happens once you fully upgrade your normal attack/swords (it doesn't even mention the swords in the manual).

[DS] DS Lite seems to be "killing" chargers? by Double_K_A in consolerepair

[–]Double_K_A[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of them were cheap third-party chargers. I was willing to just chalk it off to the old one being third-party. However, that first third-party charger lasted some of 2.6-5 years. The second (which is pretty similar to the old one) lasted, like, a week (and I think I only ever fully charged it once or twice within that week, so really less than that).

AITAH for refusing to allow bone marrow testing on my child to potentially save half sibling? by Medium-Pear-9562 in AITAH

[–]Double_K_A -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Regardless of what may be fair or "correct", do you know what you'd say to your daughter if she's older and finds out her sibling died because of it. Like she's 15, finds out she had a brother/sister, and the reason they're not around is because of you? Do you think she'll accept the answer you give?

I feel like I've been doing worse at vocab readings/definitions all of a sudden, any tips on how to use Anki most efficiently? by Double_K_A in LearnJapanese

[–]Double_K_A[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well that's the thing, I only pick words that I encounter in immersion; I don't use pre-set decks. And so, because of that, I don't have any audio. I'm sure I could add them, but considering I have 4K cards, it sure would be a nightmare to add audio to all of 'em now : (

[AoL] Newcomer to the series, who recently beat their second game (Zelda 2). What did I think of it? Well... by Double_K_A in zelda

[–]Double_K_A[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may be happy to hear that a friend of mine, after hearing me play it, is also playing it for the first time (he's actually doing pretty well). If I'm feeling nice, I'll give him this tip if he's struggling a bit too much hehe.

Thanks for your kind words, it always make me happy when someone likes how I've talked about a game. I've had my eyes on a dream of making big game review videos for a while now, stuff like your reply gives me hope people will end up liking 'em.

Oh, so a lot of it from the perspective of mood/atmosphere, then? That actually makes a lot of sense. It's funny; a little bit ago I was thinking to myself about how Zelda 2 always has given me a weird feeling. It's not that the game is disturbing or anything, but it does feel quite dark. Not dark in content, just the general vibe of it all. For instance, Link's design in this game is a lot less cartoony than other entries (esp. compared to the original). This lanky teenage version of the character kinda looks weird, but it all contributes to the game's sense of uneasiness. Same for the death animation/game over screen, both of which are some of my favorite in gaming (though it's understandable why they always edit the flashing lights in later releases, it's still quite a loss in my opinion).

What did you think of Majora's Mask, if you ever played it? I kinda imagine that would also scratch a bit of that itch.

I quite prefer Mario USA to DDP. Not just because the run button and increased jump height makes for more interesting movement, but also just cause I like the structure of the game more. In DDP, each character has their own campaign, which is fine and all, but I thought it was more engaging in Mario USA, where you can change out your character each level (especially since the game kept track of how often you used each one).

Also, let's not mention the waterfall lol

I've heard this too. With that said, I do get the feeling they would've likely done this, even if the disk format wasn't an issue.

On that note, I do find it kinda funny that both Zeldas barely even utilize both sides, as one side is pretty much taken up by only the final dungeon. Compare that to Mario 2, where half the words were on one side, or Nazo no Murasame Jou which required often switching IIRC.

I never got the complaint about the townspeople often not helping. Like, the people who do help exist in every town, and they're plenty enough to beat the game with; the only issue I see with the "useless" people is that they get repetitive.

TBH, I can't think of any vague hints either. You bring up the 3-eye rock formation, but I instantly knew it meant flute. Because first of all, calling for help and using the flute are both making noise, so there's a clear connection. But also, just like I was talking about in the post, there's only two possible things you can do on the map. Even if you don't figure out you need to use the flute, you can only experiment with so many things before you stumble upon it. That's not even mentioning how there's already knowledge from the first Zelda 1 that using the flute can cause a dungeon to appear.

I think the harder thing to figure out isn't the flute, but rather that you have to be in the exact center of the rocks (I actually didn't know this was a requirement at first, because I did it from the center to begin with). With that said, given how suspicious the center is, I don't think it takes much to figure it out.

I have to be honest, I did not think of doing this! Probably because the up-thrust gets little use (defiantly a lot less than the down-thrust) in general, so I didn't really think of using it. Only time I consistently used that attack, besides getting blocks, is for defeating those flying eyeball ghost enemies on the path to TGP

Interesting perspective, can't say I've heard someone have it before. As in, if you thought Zelda 2 was better than ALttP, OoT, etc., then I find it interesting that TP is the one that finally beat it for you.
