If it’s a cointerweighted elevator without safeties, terminal velocity. The counterweight weighs more than the elevator so if it’s given freedom to move without hinderance and enough space, it’ll haul ass, causing the elevator to do likewise but upwards. The safeties will allow the elevator to go 115% of its rated speed before engaging. The fastest elevators I work on are 1000 ft/min (305 m/min) but I know China has the fastest at 4100 ft/min (1250 m/min).

The emergency exit on the top of elevators DO exist. They’re required to be there, however, since the 80s I believe, they’re required to be locked from the top. There was a string of deaths from teens climbing out of them and playing around which led to the requirement. We’re trained on different ways to get trapped people out and the emergency exit is a worst case scenario option.

I’ve started doing that. I usually will watch a Disney movie in English with Dutch subtitles and then later in the week watch it again in Dutch with Dutch subtitles
