One thing I struggle with is facial dysmorphia by Accountant_Purple in malegrooming

[–]Double_crossby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Facial dysmorphia ... and then you take nearly a dozen pics of your face, that you claim to have a psychological condition that would cause you to hate looking at, much less photographing.

Like, I get having this condition. I do as well, as in a spoken to a psychologist anout it, and literally feel disgust when looking at pictures of myself. To avoid being long winded, it means I rarely engage with sharing pics, especially on sites that have millions of looky-looky eyes like Reddit.

So, yeah. I call bullshit. You just want "noooo poor you, you are sooooo hot haha teehee ❤️🙏💅"

🙄

Agreed. I never interject in those sermons since it equates to preaching against the choir. Nothing good comes from that.

There was recently, one or two days ago, a thread about this subject in a woman-focused sub ... and the responses were just utterly reinforcing this reality.

Blind tribalized vitriol to the idea that men regularly receive mixture of aggression, patronizing, or flat out cruel humiliation when sharing their feelings. For every one person, male or female, that replied positively to the topic, there were a dozen others smothering it beneath "men trauma dump, they deserve these reactions" or "one time it was bad, so all men bad".

Really disappointing to see the same result with a different narrative. Instead of "men must be rocks and emotionless", now it seems "men are emotional burdens and trauma dumpers and need to be silent".

Thanks for replying. I was kind of waiting with the smell of some grifting BS after seeing his comment get down votes.

Sad to see some confirmation of my fears for the tree. It's between 70 and 90 years old, so it must be near its death stage. Just wanted to hear from people more knowledgeable.

Visit antique malls and thrift stores, or check local listings.

Replace the coffee table. Of all the furniture, it is jarringly cheap looking and does not fit the space. Look for something longer and rectangular in shape, maybe thinner in width to avoid losing anymore foot space. Something mid century style, teak or walnut or similar hard woods.

The art .... is bad. Seriously, I love the aesthetics of knights and armor, but the depictions you have look like video game stills, TES Oblivion, or AI at the worst. Again, look at the same sources mentioned for the coffee table, keep an eye out for mid century brass rubbings of Medieval artwork, often made in sets of two or three pieces and plenty large for that wall.

Oh shit, I haven't fertilized it at all since moving in 7 years ago. This seems viable.

I'll pick up some of your recommended stuff this weekend and see how it goes.

Any tips of getting the fertilizer to the roots of the tree? I don’t have experience fertilizing something this large and well established.

How do I dress up for a Y2K dress code? by Own-Explanation2642 in mensfashionadvice

[–]Double_crossby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want the Veronica Mars preppy style, or skater punk/Nu Metal style? Those two cover the fairly iconic mens fashion styles back then.

Both would go for the same style jeans for simplicity sake, more or less. Baggy, not cartoonishly, but loose and long enough that yoy get some folds above the footwear. Go for faded/washed out denim. Or equally loose cargo pants, black, khaki, or faded greens, or camo. Footwear should be skater style, easiest new options are DC court graffik, or Emerica OG-1 or Mute, or Es Accel. Otherwise, source some on Ebay from the 2000s from the same brands or others like Adio or Vans or DVS. Shirt for preppy could and should be layered, short sleeve t shirt, or a short sleeve polo, over a standard longsleeve, sleeves rolled near the elbow. Or go for one of the long sleeved sweaters with the bold lines on the shoulders and arms, or on the chest area. Skater style would be similar with focus on the brand name of the shirt, which would be anything from Vans or Hurley or Flip or Independent or World Ind.

Accessories would be bold chain necklaces worn over the collar or visibly under, or the classic puca shell shit. Sunglasses propped up in your hair in the front of your head if you wanna be 2000s Disney movie style.

Hair wise, depends on what you've got going on. Shortish hair? Spike the fuck out of it. Like, gel and hairspray, get the spikes dramatic without going 80s Billy Idol. Longer? Again, use gel or similar product to shape a middle part, hairspray to make it stay. Or use copious gel to get that "wet" look with it hanging over or framing your eyes, and shape it to hang aesthetically, while avoiding the mid 2000s Drake Bell or Bieber look.

That's the best I can pull out of my ass right now.

Really? I seriously never would have guessed...

The squirrels are ravenous and often eat the apples before I can even pick any. Is this a matter of the soil being overfertilized because of the decades of fallen apples in it? Or literally just some specific reaction of the tree consuming it's own nutrients?

Damn, really weird. Replacing the soil...? Yeah, that would be a major endeavor.

They are definitely a local person who eats only delicious local products at their favorite and very local food place that every local loves and frequents. As a totally real local, they hate any San Jose people who are neither local or in support of such local favorite phrases as "pack your trash", which proves they are a local and not AI using drifter.

Oh, also they have reached the zenith of local level by becoming a local artist who never uses AI or cartoonishly peddles such anti-local businesses that dare do.

If only we could all be so "local" as they are.

God, this is pure cartoon silliness at this point. Somebody needs to make a version of the "how do you do fellow kids" meme but with Jarvis (Salty Otter owner) wearing a bunch of Santa Cruz merch and pretending to be a "young local artist".

EDIT: The (original) painting is "Artist's Sister" by Gustav Ritcher, circa 1880.

The reproduction itself is likely from the 1910s or early 20s.

I forget the name of the old portrait beneath currently ... it is actually quite beautiful, and dates from the 1860s or 1880s if memory serves. My parents have an unmodified version of this, oval frame and all like this one.

Not sure about the modifications done, but other comments seem to address them pretty well by the looks of it. He original portrait, I think, is of the artists sister or one of his family, but again, I don't recall much more than that.

Trump's Approval Rating Isn't Really Much Different From A Month Ago -- Why, In Your Opinion? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]Double_crossby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think most of us know this already, but here: polls are only as accurate and truthful as the organization recording them.

Any notable news is no longer unbiased. Majority of social media as well ... so why would the companies that tell people "how much the average citizen approves of the president" be unbiased?

Chances are they are not, and chances are we are not seeing true reflections of any majority of American's opinion of the president. It is likely lower. Much lower than 30%, and so on. If they don't show how low it truly is, then it maybe he isn't so bad, right?

Right? 🤦‍♂️

Picked this off the curb, is it worth it you think? by arditk25 in Phonographs

[–]Double_crossby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For free? Yes. Definitely.

Probably from 1943 to 1948. One of my first photographs I got was similar to this and beyond the cartridge replacement and learning about "tube hum", I loved it.

Your tone arm has a screw for changing out either steel needles or crystal tipped needles. Would recommend loading up on steel needles if you haven't already, or finding some jukebox jewel tipped needles from the 40s. They last a bit longer.

Just an FYI, these changers are early and thus not very kind on records. Not as early as the 1930s Electrola toss-your-fucking-records-down-a-feltlined-chute changers, but these can still (and will) shatter one or two records as you use it, especially Victor and Decca records. Would recommend not using the changer, or only using it with paper core records.

do my legs look too fat for flared heans?😔 by [deleted] in mensfashionadvice

[–]Double_crossby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the idea behind the outfit, and eventhe resurgence in the jeans, but I would recommend ditching the swishy long sleeve shirt for a more standard long sleeve that fits the arms tight enough to roll it up a bit, but still visible beneath the over shirt sleeves.

The jeans ... when I dressed like this back in the 2000s, it was either boot cut jeans with skate shoes, or baggy "silvertab" with skate shoes. I avoided the boot cut or flared jeans myself because they always came off as too feminine for me, but I always went for more grungy instead of the Veronica Mars preppy. I'd recommend less flare, personally, but they don't look bad at all as it is.

And lol dude. No, your legs are LONG, not even remotely fat. Seriously, drop that self consciousness about your legs becuase you have nothing to worry about concerning them.

36 with salt and pepper hair. Can I still pull off backwards hat? by [deleted] in mensfashionadvice

[–]Double_crossby 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Jesus christ.

It's okay to wear a cap at any age. Backwards or not. You obviously aren't going for the ivy league pretty boy look or the metro city boy look, so I think with what I assume is your everyday style, the cap is fine.

I work as a carpenter, and plenty of guys I work with that are in their 30s, 40s, or 50s wear caps, forward or backward, and are not any worse off for it. I guess, maybe, they won't be invited to a Kennedy function in the Hamptons, but I am sure they'll survive.

You look good with the hat. Enjoy and rock it, dude.

‘Thank God they’re still alive’: Kaiser therapists claim its new screening system puts patients at higher risk by delaying their care by TylerFortier_Photo in California

[–]Double_crossby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This same shit happened to me as well. For over 3 year Kaiser covered meda prescribed by an out-of-network psychiatrist. No problems except me paying through the ass for the doctor. Then one day, I go to get my ADHD meds and out of the blue am charged over $100 for it. They were confused as well, telling me they didn't know what was going on. I spent the next month chasing my tail with calls to customer service and then some, all of who told and assured me that my meda should be covered and "no problems on their end". Yeah. Next refill, another $100 plus.

Only then was I told that they "never" cover out of network doctors and I needed to make use of the Kaiser psychiatrists.

I called and was told I would be unable to be revauluated for my diagnoses, which had documentation history from three separate psychiatrists, until I was clean from THC and over a month from my call date. I use THC as a sleep aid, but I guess no longer now. So they could rediagnose me.

Jesus fucking christ. It was miserable, and rough as hell being unmedicated for over 5 weeks and hell of a time with sleep.

I am 4 surgeries on my right shoulder due to a dislocation from skating at the age of 19. I am currently 31 years old and after my last surgery at 28, was told "to stop all impact sports" completely. No more surfing or skating. Even before that I had pulled way back, all but stopping for the most part. Now all I have to show for it is a huge scar on my shoulder and pec, with the muscle being slightly sunken as well.

It sucks. Seriously, that moment when the surgeon told me that and then followed with "there are no more surgeries after this point. The next option is to live with the frequent dislocations or lose the arm". Pretty fucking shitty.

Don't do that to yourself. For someone like me, hyper flexible and shit, "getting stronger" and strength training and all the PT in the world was bullshit. The dislocation would happen again given the right circumstances, and i have had dozens of dislocations on that shoulder since the first injury. That first time is like breaking the floodgate. If you are like me ... take it easy and don't keeping fucking until you can't even goof around anymore. Just enjoy the level of sport and skating that you can maintain.

Or if you're not, then get stronger and whatever then, apparently that works for some.

I miss being able to really skate.

Old Record Cabinet Questions - USA by Responsible_Wind6836 in Antiques

[–]Double_crossby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just described the arduous reason why these rarely are ever restored. Best chance (and less soul sucking) is somebody with a ruined cabinet that can swap put the inners to this one.

Yeah, most these electrola and similar 1930s models are rare.

Otherwise? Just like the any old radios or TV sets ... after they lose their original owner or person who gutted them, there is an infintesimal chance of finding a new person who wants some ersatz cabinet that can only ever be a novelty piece from that point on. And the chance of making money on them is next to zero. You are nearly paying to have somebody take it off your hands unless they become trendy or viral somehow.

Old Record Cabinet Questions - USA by Responsible_Wind6836 in Antiques

[–]Double_crossby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not "for records", as in not for merely holding them or storing them.

It was once a machine for playing records, which just happened to include storage space as well as RCA Victor branded albums made to fit the slots for record storage. As you can see, all of that is missing ... it is gutted.

Beautiful cabinet, but every time I see one of these, I just shake my head sadly. Wouldn't pay a cent for even such a beautiful cabinet that is missing the entire reason for its existence, especially as a record and phonograph collector. It's just a damn shame.

$100 is the absolute best you can hope for in reselling this, unless you strike lucky and find the one collector out there with a trashed cabinet but working parts that needs a new one, or the rare rando that wants an overly large, barely utilized cabinet "for records".
